Too bad RE8 isn't available on macOS on Steam. If Apple keeps sending developers money, but require the macOS version to be on MAS exclusively these Steam numbers are going to be even less relevant going forward as they don't tell "the whole picture".

True, but that's a new reality we have to get used to. If Apple invests in exclusive games on MAS it's only natural they don't want to share the profit with Steam, just like Epic and their exclusive deals. We'll see if these exclusive titles are time limited or will stay on MAS forever. For Apple it's a win-win deal since they will get 30% of the earnings.

Right, but that makes tracking stats on Steam useless in the long run.
 
I hope they're timed exclusives and RE8 will come to Steam in time. Would be annoying if it were on the MAS forever :rolleyes:

Not entirely. Only if the Mac user base would decline or remain unchanged but it still would be a good sign if the numbers increased.

I hope so otherwise it would be a very expensive deal for Apple since Steam and Epic are popular stores but I wouldn't be surprised if we never would see MAS exclusive titles anywhere else.

macOS % has fluctuated around where it is now for a really long time. Sadly Steam doesn't seem to retain prior months/years stats for review. I'm hoping macOS can hit 3% but we seem to flirt where we are now.

I can offer from October 2020 to now, for Mac, Win, Linux and Combined, or something more comprehensive.

An interview with senior Apple execs about gaming, among other things:

“With Capcom bringing Resident Evil across, and other titles starting to come along, I think the AAA community is starting to wake up and understand the opportunity. Because what we have now, with our portfolio of M-series Macs, is a set of incredibly performant machines and a growing audience of people who have these incredibly performant systems that can all be addressed with a single code base that is developing over time."

"And we’re adding new APIs in and expanding Metal in Metal 3, etc. And then if you think about the ability to extend that down into iPad, and iPhone as well, I think there’s tremendous opportunity."

"The story starts many years ago, when we were imagining this transition. Gamers are a serious bunch. And I don’t think we’re going to fool anybody by saying that overnight we’re going to make Mac a great gaming platform. We’re going to take a long view on this.”

"We weren’t going to design GPUs for that space that were unnecessarily complicated, that had features that were not relevant to iOS, but as we looked at the Mac, we realized that this is a different beast. There will be different expectations over time — let’s make sure we have our toolbox complete. And so we did very directed work to make sure that the GPU toolbox was there — working super closely with our Metal partners. We worked hand in hand to make sure that they were going to have all the tools that they needed to accelerate the important APIs that we’re going to deliver to [companies like] Capcom, for example. Why would latency be lower on macOS?

They are talking the other way around; if latency is too big on macOS for fast fighting games.
Yeah Modern SF games are very input latency sensitive. It is what allows you to potentially interrupt your opponent beating on you.

Heck games like Guilty Gear (really any fighting game by Arc System Works) are also very input latency sensitive.
 
Sorry, I meant higher latency on macOS. Why would that be?
If there wasn't an issue with input latency (I guess you could call it lag) it seems odd that there are tips and tricks on how to improve it... 🤷‍♂️

I don't see anything in this video suggesting that there is an OS-level issue with input latency. Can you point to a relevant part?

Yeah nothing suggests that macOS has an input latency problem as an OS level issue. You are correct there. It was meant as a general question for fighting games where that kind of thing is important. I have SF4 and SF5 but don’t have crossover to see how they play on macOS.

How would you quantify just how important the issue of input latency is on Mac-compatible online competitive twitch games (aka CS:GO, Fortnite etc) vs an offline-only fighting game like Street Fighter?
