In UK they don't carry guns.

Indeed, you can get 5 years jail for possessing a firearm.

Imitation, replica and airsoft are also banned under most circumstances, toy guns have to be painted bright colours to be allowed.

Walking around with one of these is going to get you 'hard stopped' by a firearms unit anywhere in the UK, walking into a sensitive area such as an airport is just beyond belief.

He could easily find himself shot by the police for this.

Bloody stupid thing to do in the first place. The passenger deserves a hefty fine at minimum.

Who, in the UK ( or any other country where guns are not allowed ) would carry this type of case on a day to day basis in the first place?!

Oh, please, MR, this is NOT political. Not in the slightest.

It is silly that they produce such thing..... but to risk because of a toy? I mean they check this kind of stuff and then the real deal does not get detected.....

How could you put peole in danger by carrying a case???
I have seen armed police being called to the port I work in because some kid put a nerf gun under a blanket and one of the ship workers doing a car inspection saw the outline and thought it was a real gun.

No one is taking any chance at the moment. Things are too tense

Airports are just a bit touchy about guns, or things that look like them. Should be common sense but common sense again proven to be not so common.

Maybe it was their first time flying? And they have no good friends to say you know, it may be not such a hot idea to carry this around there.

Or had really bad friends say yeah man, take that to the airport, what is the worst that can happen. Bet they are getting a laugh if so going did that moron actually do that?

How do the police and people in the airport know its not a real gun when its in your pocket?

And if you pull it out shouting "No, it's just a phone case" you stand a good chance of being double tapped before you finish the sentence.

Unfortunately, people still think its funny to joke about carrying bombs in their luggage when going through security. And then whine like a spoilt child when the face the consequences of that.

Not justifying the guy, but I expect
1) a "professional" to distinguish a real from a fake
2) a metal detector to identify a real gun (in case number 3 is not followed)
3) an Xray to see trought the plastic and see if it is a real one (yes cellphones have to be passed in the xray machine and not in your pocket.)

So IF the officers do the right job, then there should be no alarm!

All in all I think .....a slow news day.

Thankfully no one got hurt or worse, cause law enforcement have split second decision to make .

Next 50% of people traveling will be arrested because their hair dryer looks like a gun..... and the other 50% will be like :

"It's dumb to bring hair dryer when traveling, you must be a moron to do that!"

and

"Police or criminals might shoot you thinking you're a threat .....to wet hair!

Nobody will be intimidated since they'll realize you're an idiot the moment you remove your dryer to dry your hairs!"

you have a serious judgement problem - are you really comparing a hairdryer with the handle of a pistol sticking out of someone's pocket?

No sorry don't see the risk in a plastic cover..... might be stupid to bring one, but if checks are done correctly it should be spotted that it is not a gun....

So you're walking around an area with lots of armed police, with what looks like a pistol in your pocket, in a country where carrying a gun is highly unusual... and you can't see how ANYTHING bad could possibly happen...

Given what just happened in turkey , an airport, and in Europe in general in the last year, I think you might be mistaken how "professional" law enforcement is going to be . Tensions are extremely highly at the moment.

Are you saying i cannot hife a gun in a hairdryer??

Are you saying that if they cannot spot a plastic cover from the real thing they will be able to discover my modified hairdryer?

Again IF checks are done correctly there should be no alarm!

Given what happens lately I know that checks are NOT done correctly and that is the problem, NOT a plastic cover.

Obviously I agree it's incredibly stupid and I agree the person involved should be fined or something too, but I think it is political. Gun ownership and different countries' attitudes towards that issue is hugely political, and this is an international forum. Terrorism at airports is something that has obviously political aspects, and part of why this man's actions were so stupid. Issues of personal liberty being balanced with the rights for everyone to be made as safe as possible, particularly at sensitive locations such as airports is another political aspect.

Politics doesn't stop outside professional politicians' workplaces. Politics touches almost everything involving human beings in any way. Maybe all of Macrumors should be in PRSI! Or at least more strictly define what they mean by 'political', because it apparently means different things to different people.

Naw, this was as flagrant as being on a plane and yelling "BOMB".

In UK they don't carry guns.

Airport police are effectively SWAT in UK airports , heavy armed with semi-automatics , side arms etc.

Beat police that walk the streets are not armed.

Current terrorist threat level has meant a big increase of armed police at airports , along with dogs etc

This is actually justifying the guy by passing the blame on to airport / security staff!

Your making a lot of assumptions. Had the passenger got through security? If not - no X-rays... etc etc.

The BBC article - the tweet - is that a photo of the passenger at the time?

At airports, it is passenger responsibility not to put themselves at risk by doing dumb stuff like this! It really is common sense. At these times, security is a sensitive issue.. and treated accordingly.
