Just because the iPT has a touch screen and (OMG!!) so does the iPhone, doesn't mean they need to share the same features. Remember: Apple is a busniess, and they are not willing to risk sales of a higher end product (iPhone) to sell 1% more units of a different product (iPT) to strange whiny people like you just so you will be "happier" with unnecessary features like a camera and a speaker on a ... MP3 player!

So instead it makes sense to listen to those who whined about their iPhone price, and get so worried about their feeling that instead of simply removing the GPRS/GSM component of the iPhone and sell it as an iTouch you decide to create a whole new line and expense and software support/development, etc. Considering that the iPod touch market is probably 2-5 times bigger than the iPhone market your ignorant 1% figure is tilted in the wrong direction.

Second a speaker might make the "Alarm" feature they decided to bundle with the phone work better than my decades old analogue pocketwatch's alarm, heck, even if it had the volume of a Timex I'd be happy, and that's something THEY decided to bundled with the iPod. Who needs an alarm on a portable music player as much as a speaker?

You should be grateful that Apple was willing to put on Safari and YouTube.

What? You must be drinking some serious cool-aid if you think a consumer should be grateful that a compnay was 'willing' to provide a product/service/feature. Don't let your colours show too much there bud, the logo has changed. :apple:
Should we also be grateful that Apple lets us put our music on their iPod and allows us to pay them to carry it around for them?

How many MP3 players have speakers? Not too many.

However the ones that were the main competitors during development had them, including the PSP and Archos, so it's not like Apple didn't have the ability or reason to consider this feature.

How many have cameras?? I can count them on one hand.

Well then obviously you don't get out much, because there's alot of them, including the PSP with its phone attachment.

Buy an iPhone, genius.

iPhone is more expensive Genius, and why should someone buy an iPhone simply to get features they could've easily added to the iPod touch? the better answer is buy and Archos or something else.

I don't agree with the OP's style, but his attacker/detractors seem to bath themselves in the reality distortion field and pretend like any criticism is unwarranted and we're just to greedy/picky.
I like my iPod touch, but had it not been a gift like the OP's I would've returned it an bought something else with my money, but with a few tweaks this could've been a great product, not just a good one, and considering they had the competition and their own previous products to draw off of for inspiration it's pretty surprising.

Because they want to differentiate their products more? Besides the Archos has two models. One model is a 3.5in and you can get that model with a camera as an option, the other model is a 4in device and comes with wifi standard. So I have yet to seen a device in North America that has a camera and wifi, that is a media player and not a PDA, phone, tablet, or something of that sort. Apple could have take a huge advantage of the youtube flicker market with the Touch.

Actually they have 2 more versions of the Gen5, and many variants underneath each of those versions;

http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5/index.html?country=global&lang=en

I enjoy my iPT, but the reality is it could've been much better with little effort and without differentiating the product in a BAD way. They added useless non-iPod PDA-esque features most people are iffy with, yet left out some very basic features of other players and even other ipods (like drive mode so you can charge on a windows 2K machine at work the way I charge my girlfriend's nano). The point is the features are benefits that make sense to have with a portable media player, an alarm and other contact lists make less sense (contact lists are great for things that can access e-mail or phone) I already have an address book on my cell, which actualy sychs better with more other computers/apps (what happened to the Apple add about working with more stuff out of the box, guess a Linux or Windows PC working with an iPOD doesn't count like a Japanese camera with a Macbook). These are niggling issues, and they are ones that would easily be solved if the focus was on the consumer and not elsewhere. You can make excuses if you want, but these are things that make sense and are available on other devices, even other Apple devices.

PSP has had all of that for the past 2+ years, and that's what has been displaced by this new iPod for me, and that's why some of the features, like even a weak-a$$ PSP speaker are things I miss, especially since there is an ALARM function. That's the point.

Apple could have take a huge advantage of the youtube flicker market with the Touch.

Yeah because that market is so huge since you can't download them to the iPOD you always have to be near WiFi to use it, so how much of an adavantage is that over my laptop, and the Archos has full flash support so it can watch ACTUAL you tube clips, not just those formated for the iPOD/Apple. As a test of my new gift I decided to try a few youtube favourites, and couldn't access them because it would not display the video, only those through the iPOD portal work, so really it's far from great. It's better than the old PSP (pretty much launched before the idea of youtube on the go) but that's not saying much, and if the PSP refresh had been half of what people had hoped there likely would be much more pressure on Apple to add these features we're talking about. Usually I see Apple try to pre-empt any response by competitors, but in this case I'm surprised that it was so crippled from the start. I don't know if that's to please their Universal/Warner/Fox 'clients' or to do the silly protect the iPhone market, both of which simply hurt the consumer. If it weren't for the hacks that make the iPOD close to what it should be I probably wouldn't use it much. That's not to say anyone else is perfect, I hacked the PSP just to add features they should've had from the start (like full brightness while on battery).

Anywhoo, the point is, there are issues, and people should try to weigh the merit of the shortcomings, not try to defend the ivory tower of the mfr, regardless of who the mfr is.

PSP doesn't have a built in camera but the new Sony Mylo2 actually does, which does more on the net that the PSP can. Then again Window Mobile has been doing flash for years(since like WM 2002 if I am not mistaken could be earlier),
The Archos has flash support but you first need to get the bloody plug in to use the net. Unlike the 504 WiFi which didn't need a plug in to browse the web, but the down fall there was the sound quality wasn't as good as the previous AV500 series. Then again with the Archos you also need to play for extra codec, which allows you to view H.264 and mpeg2. I didn't mention the other two because it isn't really pertaining to the subject at hand.

With the youtube flicker thing, it should not be that hard considering we have cellphones that allow you to directly upload to those services, who cares if you have to use wifi to do it people will do it no matter what. Or better yet just give it edge/3G support like how laptops and UMPC devices have. That be more interesting for the iTouch.

It really should be, though. Or at least there should be an option to get one like that... Just call it a Newton, add BT, a 2mp camera, and PDA apps and be done with it.

I figure that they'll get there eventually, it just might take ATT pissing Jobs off to do it. I see the eventual structure like this though: iPod touch 16gb $299 (basically the same device it is now). Newton touch 16gb $399 (iPod touch + 2mp camera and BT). iPhone 16gb (3.1+ mp camera w/camcorder and LED flash, direct to YouTube video, plus some other improvements) $399 + $20/month dataplan.

It'll happen, I think... Just not till either someone at ATT pisses Jobs off or until Apple feels that everyone who's going to buy an iPhone has bought one.

Lol! Newton. That'd be really funny if they did. Your structure looks practical. Isn't apple's contract with AT&T only until 09? I hope so; I've got Verizon (damn you Verizon, why couldn't you take the iphone?!).

WTF was Jobs thinking???

I've already done a double-take a couple times now forgetting I need to have earphones to hear anything when I'm showin' off the new "toy".

Haven't we been trying to get RID of wires for the last decade??

My sister's iPhone was easy to show off. Plus, w/o a camera, there's no instant gratification in the pixel department.

Thinkin' I might just exchange this Touch for an iPhone & get the real deal. Just hack it & use it as what a ipod Touch *SHOULD* have been.

iPhone=Mobile Telephone: Almost every *newer* cell phones have speaker phone, which magically, has an external speaker. Also. many high-tech, or even low-tech for that matter, have cameras.

iPod Touch=Mobile Audio and Video player. I do agree that the Touch should have an external speaker but I have yet to see a MP3 player or any other audio/video player (besides cell phones) with a camera.

Sounds to me like you should have just bought the iPhone.

A few Chinese mp3 have cameras, but who cares about that one. But more notably we have Archos, 402CC, 404CC and 405CC, all of which have a camera, that takes pictures and records video(in the 404 and 405 you can hook them up to a dock and use them as a pvr also. Seen them at Sharper Image.). Sony had a few pda that they touted as mp3 players that also had a camera. This one kind of counts, but Panasonic was touting their D-snap cameras also as mp3 players. There are a few other players you can actually attach a camera to.

Also means you won't have annoying brats on the bus blasting out their music.

Yeah, i hate that. Morning rides suck when such RUDE ppl impose their music on us when we're trying to sleep, read, or whatever.

I can bet you are all americans (i dont mean to offend anyone)O

All of you who now hate red, well let me tell you

You say get an iphone, ok, now i say this:

What if I cant get an Iphone in my country, and if it ever comes out this damn carriers will charge it for about 110 dollars a month.

Reasons to have a small built-in speaker:

What if im just messing around in my room, doing my homework, cleaning up, etc....

I really dont want to be wired and (lets hope it wont happen) pull it by accident and scratch it and possibly break something.

What if you are at work and you just dont want the cables messing you up.

What if you want to show a song to your friends?

What if I just want to watch some movie at the park and i dont want to be killed by cloverfield monster, well, with internal speakers i could probably hear all the devastation,

What if i just dont want to look retarded when people talk to me and i cant hear them.

There are a bunch of other reasons.

I would buy an iphone if i could, but i live in Mexico so no iphone for me.

About the bunch of retarded kids annoying everyone...

Its all about respect, anyone can buy a device with speakers and annoy the ... out of you, so let me tell you.

All those stupid kids are show off, they want to let you know they hear cool music like WINEhouse or crappy rap or some stuff like that...

Im a fan of rock, and i listen to hardcore music a lot, and i know a lot of people dislike it, so thats why you dont see me bitching around showing off my new device and trying to look "different" because of the music i like.

Again, its all about respect, i keep my music to myself, you keep your music to yourselves, i keep my built in speakers for a decent use. ( and not inside closed spaces).

Yeah and im a teenager that scares the sh+t out of gerard way, but i need to work to get my own stuff.

blah...

Ora le pues! Tengo un amigo en Earendil!!! Antes que hablo de todas las cosas buenas que hize a mi Touch..............espera..........

Let's try this in English.......... :D

Anywhooo........since my original rant here, I've been frequenting iPodTouchfans and (I know the Jobs fanboys here will disagree) most folks there see things the way I do.

Cool thing is..........they're creating solutions on their own (as I said before in this thread). I've now got speaker, bluetooth, a couple different cases..........and have progressively jailbroken 1.1.1, 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 for a myriad of cool experiences!!!

I would *highly* recommend the tiny add-on speakers found on ebay, etc. (I have since had literally hundreds of people ask me about the Touch and whenever they handle it they always ask the same damn question........"can you turn it up?") LOL!!

Best example of doing with the Touch what you like would be Brian Wong......... http://youtube.com/watch?v=jqsXas2Q3fk
