Why would anyone buy 300 phones personally in physical store instead of just having them delivered??
(Let alone doing that at 1 AM ,carrying them casually in 3 huge bags in New York City at midnight! )

Sorry but that’s just dumb.

Also how much profit was he hoping to gain reselling a readily available product bought at retail price??

Doesn’t sound like a smart person.I wonder how his “small business ” is doing.

Wait. Are the people who are buying the iPhones at this guy's small business paying more than retail? Otherwise, why bother if there's no profit for this guy. Unless he's able to get a lot of marked-up accessory add-on sales with them.
The “business man” likely is shipping them overseas for sale in restricted markets. China, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia. Just to name a few potential destinations.

Seems like insurance fraud
My thought too. All of it just seems so silly.

Apparently he isn't a licensed reseller either, as he'd save a TON of money if he was, ordering directly from Apple. Because of that, they may choose not to honor the warranty for anyone who would have purchased from him.

No one deserves to be robbed. Having said that, we all can do things to minimize the chances we're a target of robbery. This was pretty much the exact opposite of that. Anyone buying 300 iPhone is going to draw a lot of attention.

I am surprised they even would keep that many iPhones in an Apple Store during a non launch day.
It's one of their flagship stores. It has 900 employees. It's busy all the time, including at night when little else is open.

While not surprising they had so many iPhones on-hand, it is surprising they'd sell so many to a single person. They used to limit the number purchased per person per visit.

An unnamed 27-year-old man who purchased 300 iPhones from Apple Fifth Avenue on Monday morning was robbed shortly after leaving the store, according to 1010Wins Radio in New York.

He was carrying 300 iPhone 13s in three bags and walking to his car at 1:45 a.m. when another car pulled up next to him. Two men jumped out and demanded that he hand over the bags. Not wanting to hand over 300 iPhones, the victim put up a fight and was ultimately punched in the face before thieves made off with one of the bags.

The bag contained 125 iPhones that were worth $95,000. Police said the man in question often made large iPhone purchases from the Fifth Avenue Store in order to resell them through his small business. It is not clear why he was making the purchase at 1:00 in the morning, nor whether he was specifically targeted based on past purchasing habits.

Apple's Fifth Avenue location is open 24 hours a day, allowing for the early morning purchases. Apple also had a Black Friday sale going on at the time, which the thieves may have been aware of.

The NYPD is investigating the robbery, and the victim was not seriously injured. A description of the suspects and their vehicles has not yet been released.

Sounds like a Breaking Bad episode

I remembered they used to limit it when it was an AT&T exclusive, to prevent those T-Mobile jailbreakers from selling them. Now that they are pretty much available to those who want one, they stopped caring.
