What you (merchant) don't accept Apple Pay?! Thank you, but I will take my business elsewhere. Then, you can come back and do a "Julie Roberts/Pretty Woman" on them: holding your bag from the other store say "Mistake, Big Mistake!!"

It's not going to be a long time, or a long road. All these retailers will move to NFC by 2015 because after 1-2 more "hacking" scandals, people will stop handing over their cards. By the end of this year, this type of hacking will be trivial and frequent leading to a POS terminal upgrade "crisis". Mag Stripe will be dead tech by the end of next year at the very latest.

But all that said, once a merchant accepts, say, paypass, they will automatically accept ApplePay if you set ApplePay to use a Mastercard. Their terminal simply won't know the difference between a virtual credit card and a real one.

There are changes on the back end required to support Apple Pay... I believe it's because it uses a new token based system that banks may not have implemented yet (MDES and Visa Token Service). But once it's done, Apple Pay and its Android variant will work across the network.

It's important to note that even if a retailer does not explicitly state that it offers support for Apple Pay, the Apple Pay payments system will work in any retail store that allows contactless payments via NFC.
Is this true? How does that work?

Because we have these terminals everywhere in the UK.

And I have walked out on a business that doesn't take Amex. Amex customer service, including warenty service, is unmatched. When my iMacs keyboard died after 3 1/2 years Amex offered to pay for repair. When the repair cost was greater than purchasing a new one Amex told me to buy a new one and they credited my account. Do you know how many Amex employees it takes to resolve an issue? One.

You don't have to be everywhere to be preferred.

And that's why AmEx charges merchants 5% to 7%, vs. the 2% to 2.75% rate that Visa and Mastercard typically charge. The cost of that "unmatched service" has to come from somewhere...

If Apple Pay works at all NFC enabled merchants, then that's pretty much everywhere in Canada. All POS terminals at all major stores here in Canada takes NFC such as the MasterCard PayPass and Visa PayWave.

I love Canada.

What Apple is doing is a great and will definitely make the industry take notice, but just remember, we have a long road ahead of us before NFC is accepted in as many places as credit and debit cards.

For awhile, we will need to carry both payment types.

I couldn't agree more. I just think there timing on the matter looks to be really good. "the future is long" :)

It won't work. Not until apple gets paid with agreements in those countries other than USA.

Fools, they are. Once this becomes just a bit more commonplace, I will do my business with places that accept :apple:Pay. Ok, so I need an iPhone 6 first, but you get the idea. :p

Too many traditional POS systems being hacked. I'm ok with staying away from them.

No, you will be doing your business with places that have NFC activated on the POS terminals. Which will accept Apple Pay and Google Wallet and all the others. It's not specifically just Apple Pay.

Although no official statement has been given, additional merchants not planning to offer Apple Pay include the corner store just down the street, the laundromat, and the hot dog stand on the corner of 5th and Main.

Until Apple releases its Square killer and allows processing of ApplePay iPhone to iPhone.

it does. they refuse to support apple pay in favor for android NFC support, despite the hardware being the same (to avoid paying Apple incase a customer wants to use their iPhone to pay).

These companies do not support any form of nfc

I have a question. If a retailer accepts Apple Pay but doesn't accept American Express can you use your American Express through Apple pay? I don't understand enough to know who the payer is at that point.

I didn't know this. does this mean that all already installed NFC terminals will have to be replaced in order to work with ApplePay? if so that will definitely slow down its adoption greatly in countries such as Canada where NFC is already very common.

BP won't join?

Weird, they always seemed like the kind of company that was all about helping people have great experiences... while covered in oil.

We secure our credit card transactions with new forms of enhanced technology to safeguard our information but no one bothers to fix the social security card number fraud issues. I'd rather value my identity then worry about my credit card scammed at McDonalds.

IF they do require a change/update, its likely just a firmware upgrade and not a replacement of the machine. But I don't know if they'll even really need it.
