Family member? Son, I was printin' out Mapquest directions long before you was suckin' on yer mama's teat as you played Pee Monkey on her iPad Gen 1.

But seriously I just had that conversation with my daughter last week as we drove through the Berkshires in western MA, wondering how on earth anyone got anywhere before GPS. And then we lost our signal entirely and had to sit in the dark waiting to be rescued by the locals (not really).

Haha, well I come from the 8" floppy disk era. I tell younger family members who have questioned me about getting around way back in the day and I tell them it always came down to either a key map, large Rand McNally map, and landmarks. The maps would get you to your location, but landmarks would get you to the last stop. Turn left at the red mailbox, then go for three streets and take a right. Right after you pass the house with the rusted tractor out front, we're right next to it.

Yeah I used to use MQ all the times printing out instructions before a trip. But yeah they lost their way in technology similar to how Yahoo did. Which explains the current popularity.

I think a good amount of the new downloads done by Canadians. But the mapquest quality is still what it is despite what they say. So unless their quality suddenly gets better, in few weeks the usage level will be back to what it has been. Honestly I haven't heard the name for so long I thought they either sold or went bankrupt.

Printed MapQuest instructions are what actually caused to buy my very first GPS.

I used MapQuest printed directions a multi-state trip that ended up taking me down an unmarked dirt road (that I'm not entirely sure was even a public road). Several miles down that road there was an oak tree that had fallen completely across it blocking it. Fortunately, I was in a lifted Wrangler that was tall enough to climb over the tree, but swore then & there I was never using their maps again.

As soon as I got to my destination, I went to the closest Best Buy and bought a "Magellan" windshield-mounted GPS (that was super overpriced and under powered at the time). Never looked back since then.

I think is many cases it isn't a matter of tech companies (or anyone) "refusing to comply" or "making a statement" as simply... ignoring meaningless noise and moving on, because there are more important things to deal with in our lives.

Besides, the whole issue with executive orders is that they sound dramatic and powerful (which is all some people care about) but unlike actual legislation or rulings, can be undone with the stroke of a pen by the next president within the first few seconds of their presidency. Which is exactly what does happen every time a new president goes in, on day one. So relying on them so heavily, as opposed to effecting actual policy change, is just... pompous. But when you CAN'T effect actual policy change, I guess it is all you have.

Oops, they didn't. Pop quiz, can anyone in these forums properly type the name of the country without any form of assistance? No autocomplete or spell check or searching for stuff.

Turkiye has been the name of the country since it was founded in 1923. It's just been anglicized since. There's a pretty big difference between a country requesting that their original name be used and changing the name on a whim.

I was one of those people. It was the most affordable option at the time. I had a printed atlas, but it wasn't as clear as the printed, "Take exit X..." so we would usually print directions.
