For those who maybe interested to know: In Brazil it's still LAKE ONTARIO and GULF OF MEXICO (Lago Ontário and Golfo do México). And in any case, irrelevant since in schools (private ou public) students still learn (and always will) ltheir international names: Lago Ontario and Golfo do México. And Bye the way, nobody here knows the US by the name "America". It is United States (the official name), "Estados Unidos". For us here America is, and always will be, the continent.

So they kept the name of the country "Turkey", right?

Oops, they didn't. Pop quiz, can anyone in these forums properly type the name of the country without any form of assistance? No autocomplete or spell check or searching for stuff.

Completely different situation — TÜRKİYE (having watched the entire world cup as well as knowing the world around me, i was already aware of how it was spelt) is a sovereign nation who can dictate how its name is communicated on the international stage. What Trump is doing is renaming shared transboundary waters which doesn’t have a sovereign voice. By Trump changing the name, he’s childishly laying claim to ownership of it, and people are either too uninformed or too politically spiteful to realize a country can’t unilaterally change the name of a transboundary body waters. These companies are placating the child in office — knowing whoever comes in next will just set it back. Corporations last longer than administrations, but we can hold them accountable for caving to ridiculous requests made to of spite.

I seem to remember that they said something about it, and they certainly created the Gulf Renaming gag at that time… but I don’t remember if they actually got the App Store bump

Interesting.

I'm seeing tons of comments like this today:

"I deleted Google Maps from my phone"
"I'm moving all my saved locations to MapQuest"
"Fck Google... I'm leaving GMail too"

Ok... but they should have done that 18 months ago with the whole "Gulf of America" kerfuffle, right?

🤔

These private corporations are under no obligation to follow the Executive Order, which doesn't apply to them.

Good on MapQuest. 👏

This is another attempted distraction from rock bottom poll numbers, a war of choice Don got himself stuck in and the Epstein files which he's all over.
Changing your entire daily workflow because of a name change is hilarious.

Democrats- "you can't just rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, that's not how it works!!"

Also Democrats- "this is Jennifer, her name used to be John."

How is that mentally ill? 😂

You DO know the difference, right?

I mean individual feelings about the LGBTQ community aside, you know the difference between a non-sovereign transboundary body of water and an individual with autonomy? A person can call themselves whatever they want — and no political party can mandate that change. Whereas the name of transboundary bodies of water are most commonly ratified by the nations (plural) that they border, and usually aren’t changed unless it’s being dedicated to someone, not due to pettiness.

But nowhere near as petulantly vindictive as slapping 50% tariffs on your (formerly) closest ally because they refuse to change their policies about the French language, or because they think it’s a monumentally insane idea to suggest that Trump be left free to change the proposed trade agreement on a whim. Only a true malignant narcissist would be so vengeful as that.

You are trying way too hard. One platform said already that names and designations and physicality are meaningless.

I don't think the Trump Administration asked the lake what it wanted to be called ( or asked the people living on the lake's environs, more seriously ). That's the difference.

Corrected that for you:

Not in the US, just everywhere else in the world.

It's the USA that's in the minority on this.

It reminds me of the old joke headline: "Fog in English Channel — Continent Cut Off".

The European continent wasn't cut off, the UK was.

Completely fair, thought I was talking to another Canadian so I was referring to that context, you are correct though.

There ya' go Canada 🇨🇦 💪
