With that revamp of Apple's entire desktop line

Only the Mini and Pro were "revamped" in my opinion. The iMac was just a speed bump really. A bit of an improvement in graphics, but nothing earth shattering. No quad core and no up-to-date optical disc.
So I'm wondering if the sub-laptop will be debuted?

Rich

not as excited about this event as I was when it was first raised...just hoping for some cool new announcements and not just updates.

...As long a the new Final Cut will have an updated GUI, I'll be happy... I'm sick and tired of the current OS8 UI. I would love to see an overhaul like they did with Logic.

I personally don't give a damn about the UI, I want more performance in the form of OpenCL support in Compressor. I imagine most people who actually use the software to make a living will have the same thoughts.

new iPhone

Think we'll see the new iPhone on the 24th. No sense undercutting Snow Leopard at WWDC by introducing it then. Nobody would pay attention to Snow Leopard.

Urm. I think they would. Read the high number of threads on people excited about SL. Also, it's Apple, it's a new OS. What's there not to get excited about? If it's software only then new iPhone seems unlikely.

The beta version, however, is reported to be buggy

That's why it's labeled "beta" and not "gamma" or "release candidate".

And "how surprising" that Apple has an internal beta of Final Cut Studio. One would expect that much when software is still under active development and not officially discontinued. But maybe people really have a reason to be afraid if Apple is going to completely drop their "Pro" software series now that they have become an almost exclusively consumer-oriented company.

Anyway, this whole guessing what toilet paper Apple will buy - or sell - next month is extremely tiring. But that marketing strategy seems to work well. Others publish roadmaps and Microsoft is throwing out beta after beta after announcement and announcement and nobody cares. Or do they? I think Microsoft currently has more Windows 7 beta testers than Apple has customers who bought Leopard. So it seems that releasing early betas and letting the customers actively participate WITHOUT having them sign NDAs also works. And helps the software to become more of what the customers actually want -- and not what a company is willing to give them.

All I want is more speed and greater reliability. They really need to improve the reliability and performance of embedded Motion projects / templates, and Compressor and Qmaster are in dire need of complete rewrites.

But they will most likely add extra features and revamp the interface in order to make it more marketable.

wake me up when i should give a crap.

Apple has professional HD video editing software. But no freaking ability for you to burn to Blu-Ray properly.

They don't even offer any computers with Blu-Ray drives built in or as an option.

What do you think are the chances that Blu-Ray support will be added? If Blu-ray is ever going to be added, now would probably be the time to add it to DVD Studio Pro. A Blu-ray burner option could easily be silently added to the Mac Pro at the same time, while other models and iLife support would come in their next refresh.

If you really want to author Blu-ray discs on your Mac you can. We have a LaCie Blu-ray burner attached to our Mac Pro and it works fine.

So? No professional editor authors retail disks, and professional Blu rays are sent to duplications on DLT's.

Or wait, you,re not a professional...

Think we'll see the new iPhone on the 24th.

I doubt they'll replace the existing iPhone 3G a mere 8 months after it went on sale, though. We should expect an iPhone update in June/July at the earliest, I think. I'm hoping that iPhone OS 3.0 is going to put in an appearance then, too!

My insanely fanboy hope was for OSX 10.6 to be released.
....yeah, it's too ambitious a desire.

Does this even count as a rumor?

Here's a rumor for you, and I guarantee it will come true:

Apple will hold a super-special event in May to announce the all-things-to-everyone Mac. My source says its a Mac that can fold down to the size of a nano when you're on the go and yet will fold out into a full-powered desktop machine that beats the Mac Pro on benchmarks.

However, there are reportedly some bugs to be worked out and some component shortages which may force Apple to delay or cancel the announcement and product.[/qoute]

This is definitely true... absolutely... one way or another. ;)

Sevenmac.de reports [Google translation] that they have received an anonymous tip that the rumored March 24th Apple special event will focus on software.
I'm not surprised. And that date coincides with rumors before March 3 about an event for iMacs, Mac minis, and Mac Pros. I guess those rumors were off on the products but not the date.

According to Sevenmac, a new version of Final Cut Studio currently exists as an internal beta. The beta version, however, is reported to be buggy, which could force Apple to delay the special event by several weeks.
Very interesting. Maybe an announcement and preview with a release later?

It would be unusual for Apple to hold a standalone media event for software updates alone, though further announcements or demonstrations of Apple's upcoming Snow Leopard could conceivably warrant an event.
I think we'll see a preview of Snow Leopard, although not a release.

Maybe Logic Studio 9....?
Someone posted here some time ago that apparently Apple is going to release Logic 9 in March. If the poster and event are correct, then I would expect Logic 9 at the event.

New Quad Core Surprise!!!!!!!

Well, as its now plainly obvious Apple don't give two hoots about desktop users (not even their own!), I'm sure we'll see Quad Core iMacs at new reduced prices shipping with Snow Leopard, improved graphics cards (that work!), new touch panel extended keyboard (free option), free iPod for on-line orders and a change in T's & C's to prevent existing orders from being cancelled!

Alternatively, bugger all as per last update!

… actually, as per last update, we'll probably actually see reduced functionality in all areas with increased prices … now that makes more sense!

Who was it at Apple that said 'expect a surprise' … they weren't kidding!

:)

If i'm not mistaken both the original and the 3G iPhone's were announced months before they went on sale. Its certainly feasible that they are announced on the 24th and go on sale in late June.

I reckon there's a good chance that they'll announce a formal release date for Snow Leopard. Their Leopard launch was a bit of a mess in retail stores because they had such short notice and it was suggested to me by people that work in Apple Stores that they wanted to try to avoid that again by having a bit more notice. I reckon they'll formally announce a release date for Snow Leopard of maybe a week after WWDC with registered Developers getting their copy at WWDC.

Yes, in the case of the original iPhone they announced it six months before it went on sale. This was exceptional though, as it was the launch of a new product line and there was the whole FCC approval thing that would have let the cat out of the bag anyway.

The iPhone 3G was announced only a month ahead of its release date, but supplies of the old model were drying up even before then.

Have you ever even met a developer? Or a Mac Pro user for that matter?

Like almost everybody else, most developers have moved to notebooks to not be tied to a desk in order to work. And if the guys from 37 Signals are an indication, "developers" use a MacBook Pro, program in a scripting language and have a 30" display on their desk in case they -want- to work on a desk.

If you want to see a Mac Pro in action, visit your friendly professional photographer next door and see him shoot pictures with his camera tethered to Apple Aperture or Adobe Lightroom. Those guys are more likely to use Mac Pros than your next door software developer.

Developers use Mac Pros... and/or MBPs... and/or Minis... etc.
It depends on what they are doing.
Though I do agree that many types of development can be done comfortably with nothing more powerful than a MBP, or even MB or Mini.

Showing off the new Safari. Maybe new iTunes 9. Demo of how Snow Leopard will work with Pro Apps. Publicly show how Snow Leopard will reduce App sizes. vi will be 64-bit and Intel only.
