I'm amazed at how often I see...

I'm amazed at how often I see Yahoo as peoples homepage. It does give good news articles and is very customizable. Maybe not for us geeks but you know, normal folk :)

Dude, you are expressing a classic Snake Eating Itself argument. The reason why Google's search engine is so good is because of its data mining.

Not always.

I sometimes find that if I use another browser and a VPN, I get a more interesting array of search results.

I hope most people know that Google customizes the search results heavily based on your past search and click history.

Sometimes this works great, other times not at all.

Yahoo, they just can't seem to get any traction. I'd rather see apple keep Google as the default.

Meh, lots of people would switch instantly to google if this happen. Waste of money for yahoo.

I don't think it matters to the tech savy like MacRumors regulars. We would probably switch back instantly.

But there are many that would either not even notice or wouldn't care. Those users would be easy pickings for Yahoo. My parents for example - they aren't searching for anything crazy (I hope, ha!). They find high street shops, and things like "ebay playstation" for example. I don't think there would be a massive difference to basic users - and I imagine these users outweigh those that require the "better" Google results by a fair margin.

Looking around my my workplace, if I visit people in Project Management (as an example) a good majority of them stick with IE and Bing. They'd don't care or want to change (no Chrome or Firefox). As it's the default that's what they use.

As long as there is a way to change I personally don't care who the default is.

Yahoo? Does it still exist?

Omg! Yahoo?! Who the hell use this resource? Come on, Apple, don't be so silly...
Ah, I don't use Safari either... Is it already snappier after the last update?

Will never use Yahoo, if given other choice...it is one crappiest tech company that seems to have no quality check in place. Errors and bugs are everywhere on their website. Their design and look are just shiftty (remove letter f)...

So, the default would essentially be Bing then?

Yep.

Bing > Yahoo!.

It would be a bad idea for Apple to tarnish its own brand by partnering with a 2000s era web company that is no longer relevant in the 2010s.

Microsoft, on the other hand... despite being traditionally enemies, they have, due to their circumstances, banded together ('the enemy of my enemy is my friend') with Apple. Note the lack of antagonism (Ignore the Surface ads. They're just good nature fun.) between MS and Apple, which is leading to a productive relationship (Office on iOS, imminent Office on OS X 10.11, ...).

Unrelated to this, but I have a feeling that Office 2015 might be coded using Swift.

Whatever. Until something offers better results than Google I'll continue to change it!

It's called Bing.. and it has for some time now in images, maps, and search. Try it some time.

Well it certainly would be good for Yahoo, but how good would this be for Apple?

Apple will go with whoever makes the better deal. Considering how much the Firefox switch to Yahoo has hurt Google (given that they're aggressively advertising how to switch on their homepage), Google better get cracking.

You must work with an awful lot of brain dead people or alternatively people who hanker for the tech of 20th Century! Yahoo has to be the worst company for customer service I have ever encountered, they deliberately do not have a telephone number for customer support. Adobe does the same thing and their non existent customer service is probably worse, at least Yahoo don't charge for using their software!

Ummmm. Neither does Google.

In fact Google is probably the worst, in terms of customer support.

More or less, but without Bing Rewards, which is the best part of Bing.

(I'm serious, I get a $5 Amazon certificate almost monthly with it)

you can get to $5 in a month? interesting...I need to take a look at this.

I can't take Yahoo seriously for several reasons, one being Yahoo answers. I get some of the worst results when in looking for an answer to a question. When looking for factual information, I'm often left with opinions and sometimes downright wrong information. I'm really surprised Yahoo still has earnings to report. But hey, if AOL and MySpace can survive...

It won't happen. Steve Jobs was a thermonuclear kind of guy. Tim Cook is a smooth operator, and he won't jeopardize customer satisfaction that way.

I'm not that keen on Google as a company but you can't deny their search engine is undoubtedly the best out there.

I'm sticking to the one thing that Google does best. Yahoo you can stay away from me. It's not 1996 anymore. I'll change it if it ever changes on me in a future OS release.

Basically. New tab all the news items on the bing front page every day -> collect Amazon certificate. Rinse. Repeat.

Use Google for searches where you want good results. Bing is better for video searches, I'll give them that.

All comes down to if you want to shop at a warehouse store with faceless staff (VPN) or a neighborhood boutique that knows your tastes, the staff calls you out by name and has some items ready to try on before you even ask (search history.)

IMO, being paranoid about Google using your search history against your is like the being scared of a Boutique staff selling you out to the local Secret Police.

Me as well. I get a Starbucks card though. Microsoft has a Bing challenge where you can search the Internet blind using both bing and Google to see what you prefer.

Yup. And Tim was at many times to the calming factor keeping Steve's explosions from getting too out of control while still managing to keep his job.

In a way, Tim is a widow keeping the passion going with the drama fading. Keep thinking if there is another explosive exec on the way to the top at Apple after Tim's time ends.
