The question is: if Facebook ceased to exist, what would really be missing?

There's still linked-in for keeping in contact with people you actually happened to work or study with.

There's Meetups (when they can actually take place again...) and people could probably join mailing-lists or forums about topics they are interested in (gardening, pets - whatever).

It doesn't have to be all hosted on the platform of one giant multi-billion mega-corp.

Probably nothing besides making it easier to get traction on a GoFund me. Other than that I recall the internet was running fine pre Facebook.

I wish we could go back to the days of everyone hanging out on AOL IM. No stupid political memes or arguing between friends.

The only reason Apple is pro privacy is because it doesn't have to collect and sell data to make a profit. I'm happy they can afford to take that stance, and it makes their products all-the-more appealing.

You seem to have the whole transaction backwards. Because Apple’s products are appealing, people will pay money for them.

Facebook could charge for their service, but they seem to believe that their customers aren’t willing to pay for it. They could decide openly that rather than take money payments, they will barter their services for user data. But they seem to think that their customers won‘t be willing to do that either if they are transparent about what data they’re collecting and how they’re using it.

So, instead, Facebook has essentially been scamming users and stealing their data as their only viable business model and are now upset that Apple is making that harder to do on Apple platforms.

People seem to have bizarre ideas about how business works. Corporations don‘t have an inherent right to exist, they only exist because they provide a good or service that people are willing to buy or at least barter for.

This is even better than having canceled and deleted my FaceBook account. I wonder what Twitter and Google will be threatening?

Lol, this is just sad. Zuckerberg is speaking as though his company's voice still has weight when it comes to privacy or trust. Talk about out of touch.

Im hoping an alternative comes for Instagram. I can't wait the day I will not contribute anymore to Zuks profit margins.
I abandoned more than two years ago, FB and WhatsApp.

Just seeing the influence these censorious monopolies have on the engineering of consent is frightening. Who ever wins, we lose. Breaking them apart wont do much when they all have incestuous hiring practices, and members of the boards on several companies.

I'd add that Facebook could also be thinking the data of users that are willing and able to pay a subscription for Facebook is more valuable than the data of those who won't pay such subscription.

So was Jobs
In both cases (and in general with very young founders that hit it big on their first @bat) they don't learn the lessons of playing well with others, compromise, empathy and organizational behavior... they won with sheer force and never having to answer to anyone so when they hit that wall of someone bigger than you saying "no" they haven't develop the tools required to deal with it

As Cosmo Kramer once said, "Catfight!"
Or as they say in comic wrestling:

Zuckerberg's strategy has been to purchase it's competition which is why Facebook acquired Instagram for a billion years ago.

Facebook has been on the decline for a long time now while Instagram probably peaked last year.

Long term I think Facebook has some major hurdles in that people everywhere dislike their business model. Doesn't matter what political view you have, your skin color, religion.....no one is for their core business of data hoarding based off of very personalized profiles. They are not the only one who does it but they are the biggest considering it's literally what allows them to survive.

Makes you wonder if Mark has entirely isolated him from feedback that questions his point of view. Facebook is so far out there in the left field when it comes to being unethical and anti-consumer in this regard that it's hard to believe they think they have much of a leg to stand on. I hope Apple drags them over the coals. And I hope there is, actually, a degree of momentum toward protecting privacy and information on the internet as opposed to the inexorable mark of data privacy death that has become the norm, and that has born fruit to Facebook's business model.

This seems like a plausible explantation of what’s happening here. Because it otherwise makes no sense.

Reading the comments has been thoroughly amusing. Everyone hates Fb and Zuckerberg, I get it. Heck, I'm not a fan myself. But do you really think for one second that Apple is less evil? They're just as bad only in different ways. Under Cook the quality went down quite a bit and they started treating their customers progressively worse. They also only care about their profit (much like any large corporation) and will do whatever it takes to squeeze everyone dry even if Apple itself is swimming in cash. So make no mistake, these 2 are well worth each other.

Can’t delete what you’ve never had. ;)

The sad thing is that there's probably a shadow-profile of almost everyone on the planet on their servers (mine included) from all the morons who uploaded their address book.

You cannot currently download or delete this data because you'd need to create a profile first...
