Zuck: “INFLICT PAIN”

Facebook app update changes “Open in Safari” to “Open in Browser”

Zuck: **Maniacle laughter**

Can't wait for 14.5 to be released :D

I'm the "family tech" of several old people.... parents, aunts, an old uncle, and grandparents. I am tasked with managing their iPhones, their Macs and PCs.

I can't wait to go through their devices and OPT OUT of their Facebooks of every single device.

I'll do my part to inflict pain on Facebook. :D

It is only since their own ad platform failed that they have come to find mobile ads highly egregious. Funny how that goes..
Apple's Ad platform failed, because they did not want to track user data. It's not the other way round. Apple always stood for privacy, even at the cost of their own business. The Ad platform, Apple Maps and Siri are perfect examples of this.

if Apple didn’t sell hardware, would they track your data?

The answer of course is yes.

Everyone seems to be focusing on the word “hardware” in your comment, but that’s just incidental. The key word is “sell”.

If a company doesn’t produce something of sufficient value that customers will exchange money for that thing, then that company needs take something else of value to fund their business and if their customers suspect the thing they are taking might be more valuable than the product it’s being exchanged for, the only way for that transaction to work is to keep the customer in the dark.

It doesn’t matter what the product is. Apple opened the iTunes Music Store at a time when the ASP of music downloads was fast approaching free, and they could have decided to keep providing them for free while funding their operations through user data trading and ads, but they didn’t.

“And if my grandmother had wheels she’d be a wagon.”
– Scotty

But they don't, so this is just a silly thing to say.

If gravity didn't exist would we be able to hover off of the ground? The answer is of course, yes. See? I can do it too!

If Apple didn't sell hardware, they wouldn't be Apple so you're creating a fictitious company for your hypothetical argument.

Since Apple do sell hardware and not selling our data for most of their profit, what is your point?
woulda, shoulda, coulda...

The answer is you have no idea what Apple or anyone else will do. Do you think everyone *knows* what you're going to do in any given situation? You're voicing a personal speculation, completely devoid of fact, and stating it as a foregone conclusion.

The only reason Apple is pro privacy is because it doesn't have to collect and sell data to make a profit. I'm happy they can afford to take that stance, and it makes their products all-the-more appealing.

But the point is: I, and I'm sure many of his colleagues, could do without the sanctimony and preaching from Cook.

So Apple should not be promoting one of their best features because it’s hurting Zuckerberg’s feelings?

Good luck to FB. This strategy worked quite well for Macromedia Adobe FLASH ...

Zuckerberg needs to be put in his place: a prison cell with 24/7 video feeds from multiple angles. Facebook is a doomsday device.

For me, FB is one of those reasons why people want a new internet, free of all the trash and distractions. Something that doesn‘t let data creeps do their dark bidding on the internet or at least make everything transparent so everything appears exactly like it is. That includes more than just FB however. Nearly every damn site whose cookies cater to dozens and hundreds of ad vendors, all with their „legitimate interest“ singble click opt-out functionality which they legally claim upon their skill to „prevent fraud“.
Suckers.

It's so disappointing to see how much Mark Zuckerberg has changed for the worse. 10 years ago when Facebook just started, I thought Mark Zuckerberg was a truly great kid who wanted to make a real difference in the world by building a social networking platform for people to connect with each other. Simple as that, with no evil hidden intentions.

But now all we see is Mark Zuckerberg being blinded by money and profits, who tries to scam users and juice out every cent they can get. The ideology at Facebook has completely changed, it doesn't care about making the world a better place, rather it is just fully focused on profits, profits, and profits and of course selling user data.

I would never have thought Mark Zuckerberg who turn into such a money-minded person when he gains newfound power, wealth and recognition

uh. Wow. You really had no idea who this character really was did you? This is absolutely nothing new. 10 years ago and even further back Zuckerberg was the same guy. Same mentality and so on.

I won’t get into the history of it all but keep this in mind. Things like money and power don’t change you. They reveal who you are to everyone else.

I'll give Apple a pass on privacy because I truly think they believe what they're saying.

It's the other "social issues" they use as a marketing tool that is bothersome. Apple doesn't give a **** about racial equality. Regardless of what you see in their event videos, the employees in their hallways tell a different story. Apple doesn't give a **** about climate change. Their entire business model is geared towards encouraging people to over-consume.

Those are the things we should be angry with Apple over. Privacy, however, is not one of them.

Angry with Apple but still buy and use their products. There’s a psychological term for that.

A few years ago I shut down my Facebook account and opened another, using an unrelated name, added only a tiny circle of my closest friends, set my posts to "friends of friends," and kept the infamously data-insecure let-me-tell-you-all-about-this-guy third-party apps turned off. I generally avoid their carefully-kept-to-three-minutes clickbait videos and their cheesy looking HTML5 games. And every now and then I go through my profile to prune my alleged "interests" -- most of which aren't actually things I'm particularly interested in, but Zuckyou seems to think he knows better than I do.

Yeah, it's called living in the real world instead of the social justice snowflake world of "feelz," where fake outrage is used as a self-aggrandizing tool for self-absorbed, pseudo-intellectual posers.

When someone comes up with a better product, then I'll jump on that.

Personally, I don’t see why Facebook has to collect so much of our data just to serve its users personalised ads. It feels like overkill, and I would be happy for them to track way less of my data in order for the ads to be a little less accurate.

Meanwhile, the lockdown app continues to be worth its proverbial weight on gold, routinely blocking thousands of trackers from google and facebook each day.

Because they sell it to other companies. Your data is pretty valuable.
