A few years ago I shut down my Facebook account and opened another, using an unrelated name, added only a tiny circle of my closest friends, set my posts to "friends of friends," and kept the infamously data-insecure let-me-tell-you-all-about-this-guy third-party apps turned off. I generally avoid their carefully-kept-to-three-minutes clickbait videos and their cheesy looking HTML5 games. And every now and then I go through my profile to prune my alleged "interests" -- most of which aren't actually things I'm particularly interested in, but Zuckyou seems to think he knows better than I do.
Yeah, well if you didn't change your IP address where you spend most of your time online along with it, then they know it's you. You're not hiding from anyone.

The only reason Apple is pro privacy is because it doesn't have to collect and sell data to make a profit. I'm happy they can afford to take that stance, and it makes their products all-the-more appealing.

But the point is: I, and I'm sure many of his colleagues, could do without the sanctimony and preaching from Cook.
That’s because Apple has the right business model. It doesn’t diminish the pro-privacy stance that comes from it. JiffyLube’s core business is changing oil, Apple’s core business is selling products and services, Google’s core business is the acquisition of information, Facebook’s core business is monetizing personal data. And what you call sanctimony others call advocacy. I’m fine with it if it raises awareness of the privacy issue, the tech issue of our time (not bezels or headphone jacks), even as it coexists as a marketing angle.

Maybe Facebook should pay us to use their service then if that’s the case.
Maybe, but why would people when they’re happy to shovel in their private lives for free?

I remember about 13 years ago I set up a Facebook account because a couple of people “winked” at me or “nudged” me or something. First I realized that “friend” didn’t really mean friend. Then I was alarmed that people were uploading lists like “my top 10 deepest darkest fears” for public consumption. Then I learned that you could be identified on an uploaded photograph you new nothing about. Then it came to light that Facebook kept your data even after you terminated your account (which itself they made difficult to actually implement). When he was first building FB Zuckerberg famously said “They trust me – dumb f***s” and people should always remember that, as well as HL Menken: “No one in this world...has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people.”

Notice how Google and Amazon are not complaining? You know why? because they actually offer something other than collect and sell data. YouTube, Google Docs, Amazon Store, AWS, Prime, Android, ..etc Facebook all it does is capture user's data and sell it to their customers(corporates/Govs). Apple literally cut off FB's income. This guy and his company were a fad selling snake oil from the times people were in awe of his story in the movie The Social Network. Huge phony.

Zuck is like Adolf Hitler at the end of WWII and we all know how that ends. You will be forever remembered as one of Silicon Valley's villains. Take the money and go while you still can.

Out of curiosity, does the threat of "Inflict Pain" incite violence or an insurrection?

Which is wise, considering altruism is a myth.

Unintentionally puts it very nicely. If Facebook were a writer, it would be Ayn Rand -- arrogant, elitist, self-aggrandizing, sociopathic, supremely unconcerned with humanity, dazzlingly untalented at anything beside self-promotion, and wrong about everything.

Of course, Ayn Rand never made the moral choice to profit from promoting Holocaust denial. And if you come out of a comparison looking worse than Ayn Rand, you have done that rarest of things.

Context matters, so in this case: no.
Context only matters to those with an agenda. People aren't really invested in these kinds of things. It's just another opportunity to fake outrage in a world where most of the population is addicted to it, regardless of which side of the political cesspool they wallow in.

Facebook sells hardware (oculus, portal, etc)
“Sell” is a too strong word, as proven by Facebook itself: close your FB account, say goodbye to your Oculus device. That does not mean “selling” to me.

Zuckerberg literally fancies himself as a Caesar. Google it if you disbelieve... His haircut is no accident.

He's probably fantasizing about raising an army and invading Cupertino. He's making an enemy of Apple over this and letting Apple know he/FB is a threat to them.

Maybe he has to do this otherwise FB will start shrinking revenue wise. Personally I wouldn't mind if FB went the way of myspace.

Ah, an IT "professional" 😂
Well, not to get too chest-thumpy about it, but I worked for the better part of a decade for the organization that, among other things, created Mosaic. You may have to look that up; it has something to do with the intercyberwebtubes.

But by all means, continue to deploy mocking emoji. Surely enough of them will win your point for you.

Well, that explains a lot. 😂

As we ponder the subject of this thread, I suggest we keep a thought in mind that will help us find truth in all of this. That simple thought is:

Follow the money.

Both companies are motivated by the money and truly the only measure that is used to evaluate performance during a meeting of the directors of these organizations is their financial performance. Everything is measured by money.

Apple and Facebook both make decisions based on the money.

Most of this thread has bashed FB and supports Apple. I do not disagree. Nevertheless I would like to speak to the counterpoint. That FB does serve a purpose. That purpose is:

Freedom of speech.

The amount of censorship in our lives appears to be increasing at an alarming rate and it is a worrying trend. This censorship finds welcome home in “political correctness” where people feel they can bully others with their social views.

Facebook and Twitter do give a voice to people who would otherwise not have one.

Unfortunately, our government leadership has granted social media immunity and the immunity has been exploited by third parties that use the platform. People call for FB to clean it up but in reality, the problem is reflective of our own inability to moderate our own behaviour.

I value freedom of speech and freedom of expression. I think FB can serve a useful purpose. How do we make it better?

Sure thing. So if you need someone to explain DHCP to you, don't be too embarrassed to ping me. Adolescent mocking emoji optional. Now pardon me while I go do some altruism.
Altruism. Another fantasy story, much like your skill set, I'm guessing.
