Two questions,

1. Does Meta have access to the keys?
2. If end to end encrypted, why do backups need to be encrypted?

I feel like people rip on FB/Meta all the time for not caring about privacy.

This just isn't the case.

I know this because they put in a "cage" at the datacenter near us that my company uses (a pretty large cage, as you'd expect.)

And they put up frosted glass (well, probably plastic) all around the cage so no one could see in.

They're the only cage in the whole thing to have that.

So clearly Meta does care about privacy... if only about their own privacy.

WhatsApp is "far more private and secure" than Apple's iMessage platform, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has claimed in a new Instagram post.

In a post sharing a Meta billboard in New York City promoting WhatsApp over SMS or iMessage, Zuckerberg said WhatsApp is far better for privacy-concerned users thanks to its end-to-end encryption, ability to set messages to disappear after a set period of time, and its availability across multiple platforms.
Apple and Meta have had an ongoing rivalry for some time, with the tension between the two tech giants growing more recently. Meta has accused Apple of hurting small businesses and its ads business by introducing measures that allow iPhone users to opt out of tracking in apps and websites across other websites.

In a meeting with staff, Zuckerberg said Meta's competition with Apple is "very deep" and "philosophical," pointing to the increasingly competitive AR/VR space which Apple is expected to officially enter with a headset early next year.

What's interesting is Facebook won't say anything because they base their whole worth on the social credit system. to integrate that into our society. It would be nice if people would away from social media altogether and actually start visiting each other in person.

He's being misleading about iMessage not having encrypted backups. Yes, iCloud backups are not end-to-end encrypted. But iCloud backups don't even contain iMessages.

iMessage is its own thing, and all iMessages are end-to-end encrypted. Even when you have iMessages in iCloud turned on.
iMessage is truly only end to end as long as the user of the device does not make use of iPhone backup via iCloud etc. When a person makes use of iCloud backup for a device, the iCloud backup process (by default) provides Apple with the encryption key. That is how Apple is able to access user content when required to by law etc.

It's funny he says that - until just recently, WhatsApp was NOT E2E encrypted. Lol

I will say, it's used solely as THE messaging platform in Europe. Especially Italy.

Because E2EE encrypts the data while it’s in transit from sender to recipient. If a backup is NOT encrypted anyone with access to where the backup is stored could read/ view it

its availability across multiple platforms.

When I can access my account on those other platforms without having to repeatedly scan a QR code with my phone, then we'll talk. As it stands, Apple's service is _much_ easier to use across multiple devices, and isn't owned by the least trustworthy individual in tech, so I'll take my chances on the rest.

You are incorrect on this one. iCloud Backup most certainly does include iMessage and there is no way to disable it if you want to use iCloud Backup. While Apple doesn't have a way to read iMessage by itself, as soon as you turn on iCloud Backup, they have access to all your messages. They still may choose not to read them, but they can easily hand them over to law enforcement when requested. If someone doesn't use iCloud Backup then yes, all messages are P2P encrypted between both parties and Apple cannot read those messages.

At least with WhatsApps you can disable the app data from being backed up via iCloud Backup, but I don't use WhatsApp and unsure what other security measures may be lurking in the background.

While Apple doesn't want to admit it, they are very coy about the security risks about iMessage. Tim chooses his words very carefully when he says Apple doesn't and can't read your messages, but they never talk about how they can hand them over the government. It's a huge weakness that will never change because the government would be breathing down their back if it did ever change.

True…

And last year we introduced end-to-end encrypted backups too. All of which iMessage still doesn't have.

iMessage still does not have encrypted backups. Apple is able to read almost all messages that was ever sent out over iMessage.

Why do companies/leadership do this? It doesn’t look good. If Tim Cook said the same thing about WhatsApp it ask the same thing. It just looks bad to anyone who says it.

Apple hasn't called it "iMessage" for quite some time now. Minor point, but if you're taking a jab at the competition, you might try to get the name correct.

Why does MR even post this stuff? Obviously on an Apple forum people will prefer iMessage over WhatsApp.
