They are after the metadata.Given the general privacy practices that Meta and it's component predecessor companies have exhibited in the past, you'll perhaps understand if I'm a bit skeptical that their end-to-end encryption doesn't have some form of man-in-the-middle collecting data on the parties involved.
Like I said. I don’t like it when anyone does it.Tim does/did that all the time…
You may want to read this:He's being misleading about iMessage not having encrypted backups. Yes, iCloud backups are not end-to-end encrypted. But iCloud backups don't even contain iMessages.
iMessage is its own thing, and all iMessages are end-to-end encrypted. Even when you have iMessages in iCloud turned on.
He doesn't look like that anymore either. You need to use an updated image of Zuck, he doesn't look like that anymore:

Its Meta. And look up how Whatsapp is being used across world to spread hate and violence, and how Meta is giving those regimes a free run in return of ad money.Careful. This thread is about WhatsApp, not Facebook. Two different platforms.
Until just now I was convinced that iMessage with iCloud backup was not encrypted. Also due to this article:He's being misleading about iMessage not having encrypted backups. Yes, iCloud backups are not end-to-end encrypted. But iCloud backups don't even contain iMessages.

It's all about using the right tool for the job. iMessage is best if you don't feel like getting ads and having Facebook know everything you're talking about. It is not secure in the sense that governments won't know what you're talking about.Use Signal, ditch iMessage and WhatsApp!
Why would you want to have your 1 on 1 conversation with a friend being recorded in a dBase for grabs to the government for the rest of your life. Some things that you discussed can be used against you in another setting, plenty of examples. There is no benefit is it?So why would you want your messages to disappear unless you’re trying to hide something???
Asking for a friend.
It is end to end encrypted, however this is a big however, Apple has the encryption keys. This means they have access to your messages and can grant access to anyone else. iCloud while being private from advertisements is not secure in the sense that only you have access to the data.Until just now I was convinced that iMessage with iCloud backup was not encrypted. Apple's iMessage Is Secure ... Unless You Have iCloud Enabled
Apple's iMessage isn't as private as you might think. There's a big hole in Apple's end-to-end encryption scheme, and it's called iCloud.www.howtogeek.com
But reading your comment made me look again and I found an Apple support post which states that Messages in iCloud in end-to-end encrypted:
Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices

Does someone know if this e2e encryption is recently introduced by Apple?

I recently attempted to restore an icloud backup to a new device from an old device. It mostly worked but I could not restore the messages because the I needed to know the passcode of the old device, but I did not know it. It did not matter that I had the correct Apple ID and password. Any thoughts on this? You may want to read this:
Messages in iCloud also uses end-to-end encryption. If you have iCloud Backup turned on, your backup includes a copy of the key protecting your Messages. This ensures you can recover your Messages if you lose access to iCloud Keychain and your trusted devices. When you turn off iCloud Backup, a new key is generated on your device to protect future messages and isn’t stored by Apple.
iCloud data security overview - Apple Support
iCloud uses strong security methods, employs strict policies to protect your information, and leads the industry in using privacy-preserving security technologies like end-to-end encryption for your data.support.apple.com
Apple just needs to encrypt all iCloud backups using on device keys. That would include encrypting the key that protects Messages.
Then there would be no wiggle room like this.
