New guy here. Been using Macintosh since the Mac SE. I'm active in other forums (Macintosh and non-computer forums). I work for HP and have been doing computer work since 1983.

I just found these forums from a Google search and one of the things that made me register was an active Marketplace.

I would suggest a "Wanting to Buy" subgroup from the "Stuff to Sell" group. Personally, I came here wanting to post a WTB hoping to find something. Bumping into the "must have 100 posts" just to start a new topic is a bummer. I can see how it might discourage [semi-]commericial posters, but it gets in the way of people looking to buy.

Hi and welcome jreagan. Your post brings up a good question in the context of this thread. If we had separate Want to Buy and For Sale subforums, would the minimum post rule, which has helped the Marketplace as it now exists, apply to both subforums or only to the For Sale subforum?

The majority of past problems in the Marketplace have been when new, unknown members have been selling, but I don't know why people would be willing to sell to new members with no history in the forums if they are wary of buying from the same members.

Perhaps some of those who regularly participate in the Marketplace have theories/opinions about this.

If we do get marketplace mods, i think it is better to get some that don't just sit looking at the marketplace 80 % of the time. Get one that spends like 50% looking at the marketplace and 50% on the other forums. And sub forums- sounds good to me.

I personally think I'd be a good fit for a 'Supervisor' position.

No offense, but I think by saying something like that you pretty much blow your chances of becoming one.

Again, not to offend anyone, but putting Marketplace Supporter in your signature is kind of unnecessary and dumb, IMO. What's the point? Just by reading the marketplace, you can tell who supports it...we need it clearly written out too?

:p

Tell that to amacgenius. He'll come and sit on you. (disclaimer: not an actual threat, your milage may vary greatly™)

I totally agree. It just comes across as wannabe activist. I might add that the people that have been recommended as "supervisors" are all relatively new to MR, so I doubt there is any chance of this happening. Most of the Mods have been here a lot longer.

Wow, I was just trying to be nice and thank the person who recommended me. I guess I didn't see the part of the rules that said that thanking somebody for saying something nice was illegal.

illegal no, I think the implication was that nobody ever successfully nominates themselves for a moderator position. That being said I'm not sure its best to elect the most frequent members anyway, sometimes those people need moderation too.

The marketplace really should be taken out.

There has been altogether too much drama from it, and really it serves no purpose here. Honestly it's only a negative part of the forums at this point.

Making it appear to be taken more seriously by the site admins would only make it more popular.

If it won't be taken out entirely, I really like the idea of having replies not bump the thread.

Posts consisting of "PM Sent" piss me off to no end.

Well, he didn't sit on me yet, I think he's targeting you. :) Just kidding Larry. :p

Maybe people should only be allowed to post a thread in the Marketplace but then there should be no replies to the thread. If you want to get in contact with the buyer/seller then you have to either PM or email them.

I think if we divide the marketpace into WTB and FS/FT sections, things will go a lot smoother. I'm not for removing it, becasue I have gotten some good deals there, and I think responsible members shouldn't have to suffer the consiqueses of the " people who bump threads every second" and those who are just posting for the fun of it. We need to get the line across that Buying and trading is serious stuff, and its not right to abuse the privilige. Hopefully we can further restructure the marketplace into something that is useful, and not a bunce of bumps and those " AUCTION ENDING IN 10MIN!" posts. I think the mods have done a good job removing members who abuse the marketplace, but I still think more needs to be done in that area.

While we're at it (stupid flame war starting): If you're going to quote somebody, quote the whole thing, not just what makes them look bad (odd David Letterman-ish mental feature coming to mind):

Aw, shucks. Thanks :D

I probably spend 30 minutes a day reporting stupid posts in the Marketplace, I personally think I'd be a good fit for a 'Supervisor' position. Even if the forum doesn't get divided up, there really ought to be a dedicated person in there to control it.

I'm interested to see Arn's view on this.

You need to brush up on your MR history. Besides, most people have more dignity than to openly beg... :p

If we removed all of the "PM Sent" posts in the Marketplace (posts count) archive, there would be a lot of 6502 ranks out there. :D Add to that, the mutual congratulation, there might be some newbies.

I really have to believe that it's quite wonderful to have several people offering to be Marketplace moderators. It feels a bit like putting the thieves in charge of the bank. No offence, of course. :p

That's why I think threads in the MP should be restricted to 1 post or "ad" if you like, then any further correspondence can be done via email/pm. Once the item has been bought/sold/traded etc the thread can be deleted or updated to make note of this.

Flame wars are fun.

It's a good idea.

I was just thinking that I haven't seen a whole lot of the mutual congratulation posts since Marketplace posting doesn't add to the post count. Hmmm...

Ah, I have an idea. Most people bump there threads to bump there post count, right? Well, what if we make it where the Marketplace doesn't count on your post count!

That might help! :)

I'm not sure if you're being serious or not, but MP posts already don't count towards post count.

I'm not sure, either, but he was gone a while.
