I really have to believe that it's quite wonderful to have several people offering to be Marketplace moderators. It feels a bit like putting the thieves in charge of the bank. No offence, of course. :p

So basically you are saying that you have no respect for your fellow members?

No. I think he's saying that, in this case the people who have personal interests in the marketplace might not be the best suited for moderating it.

Nothing there about respect for fellow members, expressed or implied. (As far as I can tell).

I have plenty of respect for my fellow members but I find that most people are willing to use the rules for their own desires. Without discpline, there is only chaos.

Then where do you put them?!

Back on topic. I wouldn't blame the mods if they chose to completely eliminate the marketplace... but truth be told, I'd be one of the MR members who'd miss having it around.

Echoing others-- the thread can be started then locked, only allowing the OP to modify that one post as necessary. All the other discussion done privately via chat, PM, email, etc.

Taking this totally offtopic, but how did that iBook lid work out for you?

Duff-Man says....my biggest peeves with the Marketplace forum are of course the sly bumps that happen all the time and also all the "feelers" out there. To me, either your item is for sale or it isn't. Legitimate sellers get bumped off the first page too quicky because of all these feelers, which results in them wanting to bump theur thread. Get rid of the feelers and half that problem may disappear too. There are many other ways to determine the value of your item - do your own homework, don't expect us to do it for you.....oh yeah!

One other thing I noticed after the new changes were put into place is that fewer people felt the need to post " great seller here" in each other's thread everytime they posted a new thread. It seemed like for a while, one of the regulars would post a thread, and then 4 people who recommend him and he'd post 4 thanks yous for each of the people who complimented him and you had an easy easy way to keep threads at the top, but magically since the post count is gone I don't see this as much. probably a coincidence...

edit: Duffman posted as I was typing but I agree on the feelers sort of too? WTB FEELER? WTF? I mean these threads aren't binding, its not like because you post a WTB thread you have to buy something from someone in the forums. It also goes down to price research, people are kind of lazy when figuring out the secondary market for things.

So, it wasn't just my imagination? (I mentioned it earlier. :D)

I think we should have a premium location on the marketplace that people will pay $1 or something like that to stay at top like how google does it with searches. So there will be a given top location for people that pay $1 a week and below the "premium" location will be the normal "free" posts...

Just an idea to stop the bumping and if people really want to sell it they can pay the $1 for the week of top billing...

Although I can't speak for him, I don't think arn is interested in collecting a dollar here, a dollar there for miscellaneous fees in the way that eBay does.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The best thing that could happen to the Marketplace is to eliminate ALL replies to posts and force everyone to use PMs or e-mail to communicate with buyers and sellers. Marketplace posts don't count toward post counts anymore (thank goodness), but there really is no need for any further action on a particular post beyond the original poster editing his/her post with new info (additional details, "It's sold!", etc.). Doing this would prevent bumping, thread-crapping, thread-hijacking, selling by <100-post people (by posting in someone else's thread), and would eliminate the need for almost all moderation (and therefore would eliminate the need for the proposed "Marketplace Mods"). It would work a lot more like Craigslist, which I've found to be a remarkably efficient system.

Just my 2¢.

howardforums does this too, and I've had some good sales over there. It also forces sellers to disclose as much as they can and eliminates feelers

yeah ... I knew that wasn't a totally original idea but I passed over your post when I was lookin for who to quote. now I found it and I indeed agree with you.

I was just thinking that I haven't seen a whole lot of the mutual congratulation posts since Marketplace posting doesn't add to the post count. Hmmm...

Yes, give us some credit, won't you? Otherwise, I'll have to ask for my 2 cents to be returned.

Sorry, you want credit for your cash? ;) I think the thing is that most of us have seen the issues--even those who seem to think that there aren't any. :D

I don't actually see a need to change things but it would just be nice if we had some stronger cooperation from some of the offenders.

I personally am against the idea of sub categories. I'm not usually looking to buy or sell things (ala doucy2... good riddance) but I frequently just look over the forum quickly to see if anything catches my eye. I like the idea of no adding to the posts, just the OP and any other contact is through PM.

Ive a question. Whats bumping?

And an idea, I've not had any today , so its time for one.

MacRumors is a community of people, who were either friends in the real world or met in here. Id say the majority of people get along pretty much ok, and with that in mind post in the market place their items for sale, now from ive noticied, these are usually slightly less than what they go for on Ebay, due to being a community and in the community wanting to give our new MR friends a bargain. So how about just using the marketplace to post your Ebay links, or links to you as a seller to say this item is going on sale, etc etc. And then we go and bid on it. Now say for example i won an auction from say clayj when i went to purchase it, because i'm a MR member, he gives me a discount.

Also on our Ebay Auctions, if we included a link to our MR profile or something, then we would know that you were a MR member if you were browsing Ebay, a quick PM on MR just to let the seller know that you were bidding, and who you were.

Oh well its just a thought.

It's when someone makes a post in a thread simply to "bump" it to the top of the New Posts page. :)

Occasionally people will try to be stealth about it, as such:

"prices changed!"

"this is a great deal!"

"check this out!"

A question for everyone. Is it really necessary for people to post "PM sent" in the thread? Wouldn't people who post in the thread be looking for Private Messages anyway, or at least discover that they got one? Once people are communicating privately, do the rest of us need to know about it?

Personally, I've noticed that some sellers don't state whether they check PMs or the thread more often and I've been sloughed off of a potential purchase because of that. I know that that's why I PM and post a reply in the thread.
