Is there a manufacturing issue by third party case companies (as the apple smart cover still works) or did apple really change something?

I can't emphasize the following enough.....

Multiple people have already posted that a case that worked perfectly fine with their iPad 2 is NOT working with their iPad 3!

The same exact case that was ON their iPad 2 and is now on their iPad 3. The magnetic switch sleep/wake worked fine with the iPad 2 but doesn't work with the iPad 3.

Obviously, Apple changed the magnetic switch design. The switch used in the iPad 2 wasn't picky about polarity. The switch used in the iPad 3 is picky about polarity.

How were the case manufactures to know that Apple would change something like that? The polarity didn't matter before so this is as much of a surprise to them as anyone else.

If your Moko case works sporadically, instead of dropping the flap, try to slowly slide it over. I found I can get more consistent results that way. It obviously is not a solution, but helps to cut frustration levels before they fix it.

I've experimented with this. If you Moko case has the magnet's polarity oriented so that it's not compatible with the iPad 3, slowly sliding the edge of the case across the side of the face of the iPad WILL trigger the sleep/wake feature. That's because the edge of the magnet (versus a flat side of the magnet) has the correct polarity to activate the switch. However, the moment the case lid is fully slid into the normal close position, the iPad will be awake under that cover.

Excellent demonstration.

It's curious why all moko cases are not demonstrating this polarity issue.
That is, some of the moko cases are working and others aren't. This still would suggest that the cases makers have the magnets with correct polarity on some moko cases and not on others.

That video makes sense, but leaves me puzzled on why the Apple case works for both the iPad 2 and the new iPad.

i received my 2 maroo cases today. the koru II and the roto II. both fit well and are of excellent quality. but neither of them work with the sleep/wake function.

i watched the video, and the roto II is the red one that mark booth used that DID work for him. for some reason, it is not working for me.

maroobeau, do i need to contact you to figure out how to fix them?

thanks!

I'm glad my Moko works with the sleep/wake function but even if it didn't I would work with them to get one that did. The cases are amazing and even at full price, I would pick them over any other leather case.

I must be one of the lucky ones. I just received a Mana II from Amazon and the wake/sleep function works perfectly. The only thing I don't like about the case is the location of the hand-strap. I'm right handed which means when the case is folded the strap is on the right side thus necessitating the use of my left hand for screen use. They should have two straps on the inside jacket. I guess this is one of the few instances where the left handers don't get the short end of the stick.

Let your puzzlement end! Here's the scoop:

The magnetic sensor switch that Apple used in the iPad 2 is NOT sensitive to polarity. BOTH poles of a magnet will activate the sensor switch in the iPad 2.

For the iPad 3, Apple switched to using a magnetic sensor switch that IS sensitive to polarity. Only ONE of the poles of a magnet will activate the sensor switch in the iPad 3.

Confirmation of the above:

I shared my blog entry (link in my signature) with a case manufacturer in the UK. This morning, he wrote back and explained that he took a case that worked with the iPad 2 but would not work with the iPad 3 and did a little surgery. He reversed the magnet in the cover and then tested it again. Success, the cover worked properly with BOTH the iPad 2 and iPad 3.

It's not sensor position that is causing problems. It's the fact that Apple has switched to a different sensor type.

I just got lucky with the Roto II with received. I could have just as easily been that the Moko II worked ant the Roto II didn't. Or that both cases did work, or both cases didn't work.

Since the polarity of the magnet DID NOT MATTER for the iPad 2, it's quite obvious that third-party case manufacturers didn't require a specific polarity when the cases were being assembled. I picture case assembly workers simply grabbing a magnet out of the parts bin (or from a strip) and putting things together with no regard for the magnet's polarity. Until the iPad 3, the polarity didn't matter.

It's all simply luck of the draw.

By the way, I sent the link for my blog post and video to Beau at Maroo. I suspect they have probably already figured it all out anyway.

Thank you so much, Mark. That video is definitely helpful.

Again, to everyone experiencing problems with the magnets, I will be sending out an email this coming work week explaining what we're going to do to fix the situation.

Thank you all so much for your patience. Outside of the magnet issue, I'm thrilled that everyone is enjoying the case. :)

Hi MarooBeau, I sent you an email could you reply back its regarding the discount. Totally missed out but wanted to ask please regarding my query.

Thanks

Awesome that you are on the forums here and talking directly with the customers. My Moko is awesome and I love everything about it! Best case for my new iPad!

Really nice leather on the Moko case, feels really supple. I can only imagine how the other expensive leather case must feel like.

Only thing that worries me is the hand strap feels kind of rough, touches the screen when closed.

I was also a little worried about the hand strap touching the screen. Can anyone who has extensively used this case share their experience with this specific aspect? Other than that I am really a big fan of the case so far.

I have used a Kumara on my iPad 2 and now the new iPad since last May when it was first introduced and haven't seen any issues with the screen. I also don't use a screen protector.

Thank you for the quick response. That is reassuring. I don't plan on using any sort of screen protector either but was honestly considering removing the hand strap for fear of it possibly scratching the screen when closed.

Yeah, kind of defeats the purpose of having a nice smooth suede inner lining. Was also thinking the same thing of cutting off the strap since I won't ever use it.

I have to say - aside from the magnet issue, the case is fantastic and for the 1/2 price sale I got it for, it rocks!

I saw on here where someone is receiving a new case, and gets to keep the old one, will we all be receiving the same treatment?

I too ordered with the discount the Tatau case for my iPad3, just got it on Saturday - it's an awesome case, quality is great, feels really sturdy and doesn't add too much weight. Unfortunately I have the same problem as others with the auto switch / smart cover functionality.

It seems to work about 1 out of every 15 times I close it, but those times that it does work, I notice (when I look under the cover) that it seems to come right back on again so it's not serving it's purpose. I'm confident they will remedy the situation based on the good customer service experience I had with them during the order... we shall see.

I forgot to say that on the Maroo website, it still shows my order as pending and I received them today 3/19 ordered on 3/13. Never showed shipped or tracking number. I was surprised to see them today. I guess they got busy shipping the cases out and didn't update shipping info! ;)
