The screen size is not so much the issue as the form factor. I am all for fitting a bigger screen on the same size phone if they can.

Yea I agree. By the looks of this though, the 4,7" phone will be bigger than the 4".

I have an eight year old daughter. The iPhone 5 is allready big for her tiny pockets. Apple needs to atleast have one phone model to accomodate kids imo.

I don't think higher PPI is necessary on this one. I think what would be better is to use the screen as FULL HD. The issue with more pixels at this screen size is:
a) You won't be able to discern the difference
b) Increased battery drain to drive the GPU to power all those extra pixels
c) Downloading and storing content that is HD enough to actually use those pixels.

I'd rather see Apple use a 720x1280 resolution screen for true 720p HD and then black out the edges for normal apps that don't run fullscreen or haven't requested the full screen. Again, I have little thumbs.

If they're going to go to a non-Apple standard resolution (meaning no doubling of the current iPhone res), they should just go to 1080x1920 and be done with it.

What kind of resolution can we expect with the new screen sizes?

Will devs again have a to support new resolutions as with the introduction of the 4" screen?

I definitely hope they increase the PPI on their "retina" screens. All Android flagship devices have 400+ PPI and trust me it makes a difference.

I think you might be the only person on MR that actually prefers black edges around apps

An 8 year old child doesn't need an iPhone.

Thanks evolution.

Isn't this what everyone said with a 4" smartphone as well?

Let's face it, because of the smartphone screen size wars, my thumbs are evolving to be longer, and my penis is getting shorter.

But... my 3 year old has an iPhone ;) It's an old one but works great for watching Dora in a pinch!

Some random poster on a rumors forum doesn't need to give a fellow poster parenting advice....let him do what he wants. Its his kid, not yours.

Okay, sure. People seem to have more money than sense these days.

Welcome to the new Apple....fragmentation. Developers are going to HATE coding for multiple resolutions. Why do you think the majority of Devs go iOS first...because its easy, now we are going to have multiple resolutions...congrats Apple, you are now Android.....IF these are true and REALLY hope they are not. I don't want a gigantic iPhone in my pocket...when I need something bigger, boom iPad. DONE. Arghh....cannot stand big phones and now it looks like I am going to keep my iPhone 5S for like a decade....

Really developers are going to hate coding for multiple resolutions?

We already do it now, there is this thing called an iPad and there are still iPhones around with a 3.5 in screen.

Right now we have to code for 640x960, 640x1136, and 2048x1536 in retina res. Thats more then one.

If Apple does it like Apple does it there should only be one new resolution for both devices like how they did it with the iPad Air and Retina iPad Mini.

As a developer I can not wait for more bigger devices with a higher screen resolution displays. If the developer builds the app right (for most app types) its very easy to scale to different resolutions.

Yes, I'm afraid dev's will actually have to do some work.

Considering the broad range of devices available, a developer should ensure that an app/webpage scales to a variety of sizes and aspect ratios.

Not saying I prefer

I guess I'm not saying I prefer it, but as a developer it would be nice to let the current apps look and work "as usual" until the developers can change their apps to a bigger resolution if they desire. Kind of like what Apple did when they released the iPhone 5. It also handles situations where people with shorter thumbs won't have as hard of a time getting to the other side of the screen.

Maybe you should start using your penis to control your phone then.

I can only make use of that on my iPad ;)

If you really want Apple to do what's best for the user, they should give us options. On the Galaxy Note and maybe other phones, you can actually make the screen smaller so you can use the phone with one thumb. I don't have a Note I just think that's a really cool feature. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGB2yDEjwnk

The only evidence I have seen was in the samsung trial and that was years ago, so show me RECENT evidence.

Recent evidence? Like the fact that Apple is releasing two new, larger screen phones this year?

I would bet Samsung purchases are based on the following, in order:

1. Price
2. OS
3. Apple hatred (let's face it, some hate Apple like MS used to be hated so they buy other phones out of spite :)

Of course, that doesn't mean every Samsung purchase was made because of price, but I would be highly surprised if that wasn't the major reason.

A).. out of spite... Wow. That's certainly a reach...

B). Price?. In the UK, most of the flagship phones are very similar prices....

Have you ever considered CHOICE as an option for folks purchases...?..

Evolution Design

Maybe you should start using your penis to control your phone then.

Also, I should add that I was just taking evolutionary theory to the extreme. If all men care about are using bigger phones all the time, they wouldn't be using their other parts. Evolutionary design would then make that part smaller (like a tail bone since we don't need tails any longer), and place resources on what we do need for survival which are cell phone screens.

Ya, but lets put it in context - Apple sells what, roughly 120 million iPhones a year? So a few million would equate to a single digit percentage of iPhones they sell.....

Saying "millions" sounds big - but you have to put it in context.

That being said, I think there are enough people who DO want larger screens that Apple will and should oblige. I also don't think for a second they'll get rid of the 4" form factor. I think we'll simply see adding of the 5"+ to the existing 3 phone model. Except for this year, instead of 3.5" 4S, 4" 5C and 4" 5S we'll have the 4" 5C, 4" 5S, 4.7" 6 and 5.7" 6L.

The 5S is already more powerful than any app takes advantage of and likely will be for the foreseeable future.

A big company like Apple doesn't take a dump without a plan. If Apple is doing it, then they must be pretty confident that people want bigger screen phones and that they will sell a lot of them. And that confidence isn't just a guess, they research. Some of that research doesn't always serve well (iPhone 5C), but Apple has been more successful than not in figuring out what people want (or at least what they will buy).

Thats a rumor.

The rumor is two phones. But it is 99 percent guaranteed the next iPhone, at least one of them, will be a bigger screen. That is not just rumor. Its hard to hide mass production orders being placed.

Sorry but right now we have no part leaks, its a rumor. period.
