I did not know that Apple ever said that the iPhone was anodized. Maybe they have.
One thing off topic of your post per se. . . The second picture in the article shows an iPhone with the FCC markings on the back. Where does Apple sell the iPhone that this is required to be printed on the phone? Not in years have I seen Apple place this on the back of the phone. The label is in Settings > General > Regulatory. . . Just thought that was a bit odd.
Great catch! In 6 pages, you're the first one to mention it. I wonder what the full story is.
Hahahaha. All the matte black haters were making fun of us jet black lovers, and now look at ya. My jet black is so beautifulthanks MKBHD for just recommending the matte black over the jet black
Ever heard of something called Europe? My iPhone 7 has those markings, although they are way less visible than they appear in the picture.
So in plain English: A company selling a ~$700-$900 smartphone has faulty quality control.
Yep, I certainly have heard of Europe. I've spent a lot of time there too. You all live in castles. So fancy.
But really, thanks for answering my question. I did not know that the markings were required there, which I why I asked where Apple sold the iPhone there that needed it. And really, it is strange that Apple found a way to not have to display those markings in so many other countries, but not Europe.
No problems with mine. Mind you, I look after my stuff properly.
Still not as bad as a company selling a $700+ smartphone that catches fire and harms its users.
I have a matte black iPhone 7 Plus and I don't keep it in a case. It bumps uglies with lighters, keys, and other metal object and the ONLY parts that are remotely showing signs of wear are the plastic antenna.
If you drop your phone on concrete of course it's going to chip and scratch.
These people are the same people who are complaining about the iPhone 6 Plus multi touch issue and claiming they've never dropped their phones.
A number of customers who purchased the matte Black iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus have noticed that the anodized finish on their devices has started chipping or peeling off in areas where there has allegedly been little wear, leading to a growing complaint thread on Apple's Support Communities.
Multiple photos in the thread depict chipping in areas near the speaker grille and the volume buttons, even in situations where the iPhone was said to be protected by a case.
At least one user has seen more extensive chipping across the back of the device, a much more serious problem than most of the reports.![]()
A finish prone to chips and peeling is not unique to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, nor to the matte Black color. It's an issue that has affected several versions of the iPhone in the past, including the iPhone 6 and 6s, but there seem to be a higher number of complaints from iPhone 7 users who are affected by the problem.![]()
Parallels can be drawn to complaints that surfaced in 2012 after the release of the Black and Slate iPhone 5, which also drew a lot of criticism from customers due to chipping and scuffing issues. At that time, Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller responded and said some wear was normal. "Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color," he said. "That is normal."

Matte Black iPhone 7 owners who have contacted Apple about the chipping issue have been told that because it's cosmetic, their devices are not eligible for repair, which has traditionally been Apple's stance on reports of finish problems.
Cosmetic damage is not covered under warranty, so iPhone 7 owners with chipped devices are unlikely to get replacements. Some affected users from Apple's Support Communities have used sharpies or black paint to cover the damage, while others have sold and replaced their devices with a color less prone to damage.
Apple warned users that its glossy Jet Black iPhone 7, sold alongside the matte Black version, would see "fine micro-abrasions" with use and instructed concerned customers to use a case, but no similar warning was given about other iPhone 7 colors.

And the award for best rant of 'February 2017' goes to....A $700+ phone should not have paint peeling off less than a year after it's introduction. My $40 Microsoft Lumia 640 is black and has not a mark on it. With a $98 SD card, it has over 200GB of storage and with a Tracfone plan I pay ~$17 a month and I just passed my one year mark a couple of weeks ago and I've never once run out of talk time, data or text messages and I read the news on it 5 days a week (I don't watch streaming videos, however). It has more than enough power for HD movies and records in 1080p video and 8MP photos. It was practically a steal. I simply cannot comprehend why someone would want to pay over 7x more for a POS that can't even keep its paint on and won't be supported or will perform extremely poorly two major OS update versions from now. Mine had Windows 8 Mobile on it when I got it and now has Windows 10 and it got even more stable and faster with Windows 10 (nothing lags or feels slow at all and it connects to my Subaru's Bluetooth stereo just fine, etc.) The lack of certain custom (bank, etc.) apps is its only real limitation and that's do to people WANTING to spend huge amounts of money on a phone that is outdated in a year or two. I think people must be brainwashed to buy iPhones or something. I like Macs, but the iPhone is a complete waste of money, IMO and frankly, I'll need the savings if I ever want to buy a Macbook Pro again given how much they keep raising the prices on the damn things. Come on, $2400 for a BASE 15" model with only 250GB of storage? It's over $3000 for one with 1TB and it still has a crap GPU! Holy hell that's ridiculous. Maybe it's time to ditch the Mac too.... I'm not poor, but I don't enjoy being RIPPED OFF either just for a brand name. They're talking over $1000 for an iPhone 8. No phone should cost more than a notebook. It's a fudging PHONE for god's sake. The screen size/interface alone creates limitations even if the CPU does not.
And we wonder why Apple began to refrain from providing a black phone for years...
