I'm thinking about saying screw waiting for the MBP update and ordering my MBP so i can get acquainted with it before college in the fall (PC user so far). I'll be living in a dorm room, but can any other college students on here lemme know what screen you suggest? Matte or Glossy?

If you do critical image work (e.g., photography, illustrations) then a matte screen is better. If you edit on a glossy display your prints will often come out flat because of the artificially high contrast of glossy displays.

Thanks alot.

When you get to college, please spell it "a lot"; otherwise, you'll get points deducted from your papers. ;)

It is completely personal preference, and don't decide purely on what you hear, some people under-weigh some of the cons and then are not satisfied because they did not feel that the con would be a major problem. I would go to an Apple store and compare the screens, but if you are not a person who lives near one, then go to your local computer store and compare those screens, granted, they won't be the exact same screens as Apple, but they will give you a better idea of the differences between the two.

And PLEASE use the search function in the future, the option was right there when you went to start this thread, and you would have been directed to thousands of threads on this issue where you could have found all that you need.

had matte for a few years, then got glossy and have been using it for a few years and LOVE it.

Go to an Apple store if you can and look at them yourself, or at least go to a bestbuy and compare even though it really isn't the same.

glossy. apple's glossy displays aren't the same as cheap pc manufacturers' ones. apple displays don't reflect light as much but still manages to produce more vibrant colours than matte.

i got the glossy with my macbook and love it. I just bought a macbook pro last week. I asked for the glossy but they gave me the matte. I didn't notice until i got home. I decided to go ahead and keep it.

They are both nice. The glossy does reflect some. I found myself adjusting (tilting) the screen when there was a glare. But, it didn't bother me. It is a beautiful screen. The matte is also a great screen, thus my reason for keeping it.

If you are going to use the laptop outside at all, i would suggest the matte.

again... the macbook's glossy screen is not to be compared to the macbook pro's. for one thing, it uses CCFL backlighting, and tends to look washed-out, and in my experience is also more problematic in direct lighting for whatever reason.

totally different.

thanks

i love my glossy. used it outside at Starbucks for the 1st time today and had no problems. it didn't just radiate with light and glow like it dose in a dark room at 2am but nothing will. i found myself turning the brightness up one or 2 notches but i never had to sequent to see anything and it was still set considerably lower than max brightness for battery reasons. dont have a matte display to compare it to in the same situation but i would say outdoor use isn't an issue.

i just came back from bestbuy and they have a apple store like section with macbooks, they had a matte mbp and glossy mba mb, the glossy screen where so much brighter then the matte screen! matte screen is really dull..
the glossy really makes the colors pop out, they girl helping me said the glossy is nicer too :)

Glossy is simply much more beautiful looking! Vibrant colors, seems to be a brighter display as well when i compared my MBP with one with matte. ;)

Matte vs glossy is really the question of anti-glare coating or not. I prefer the anti-glare coating.

Apple wanted to save a few bucks by leaving the coating off and they couldn't brand the screen "glare" version, so their marketing people came up with "glossy."

erm... sorry, but hahahaha. they aren't made of glass, if that's what you're asking.

i've worked with both the glossy and matte screens... i don't really like the screen on the macbooks, and it's completely different from the glossy screens used for macbook pros, so don't use those as a comparison.

as for me... glossy is the only way to go. contrary to what everyone (mainly matte owners) seems to believe, the glossy is if anything more viewable than the matte in most lighting situations. my sister has a glossy-screened dell and it's a nightmare, but after working in all sorts of lighting situations with my glossy macbook pro i will say that reflections have never been a problem. no headaches, either... i daresay apple owners are some of the most dramatic computer owners there are. "ohhh, my 5-pound macbook pro is giving me back problems... ohhh my head is throbbing after using that nice, bright glossy screen... ohhh my screen looks vaguely yellow from behind..."

Lol very dramatic indeed. :)

Ohhh my screen just cracked... Lol

personally, matte. but it's different for everyone. i see the initial attraction of glossy, but couldn't deal with it all the time.

god, isn't it awesome, how we can all chose whatever we want?!?!?! free will!

You need to find an apple store that has a glossy MBP, the glossy on the MBP is even better than the MB. Although the MBA's is closer to the MBP's glossy (LED backlighting, etc). I was never a glossy fan, mostly from seeing all those crappy PC laptops out there, until I got a MBP glossy.

I made the choice to go with matte for my second MBP. Having used a glossy 15" for about a year and a half, I can say that the matte display isn't that much to cry about.

I don't hate it, it's a wonderful display that doesn't reflect as much as the glossy version, but you won't notice that in everyday outside or indoor use.

If I had a choice, I'd stick with Glossy all the way, since it is brighter and crisper, but matte is okay.

Color professional here, don't listen to anyone that says anything about glossy not being color accurate. If they do, tell them they need to do back to school and learn how to tone and adjust colors.

whats so bad about glossy? if you are Stupid then you will hae reflections most of the time (not that its bad) but you just need to ADJUST the screen to you, you will not have anymore reflections! ;)

adjust by physically adjusting the screen
