You need to find an apple store that has a glossy MBP, the glossy on the MBP is even better than the MB. Although the MBA's is closer to the MBP's glossy (LED backlighting, etc). I was never a glossy fan, mostly from seeing all those crappy PC laptops out there, until I got a MBP glossy.
Yeah i've seen several Pc's with the glossy screen and it isn't quite flat. There are places where you can see the plastic looks sort of stretched over the screen and uneven. I got my 2nd MBP with a glossy screen and have had mostly positive results so far. Only problem I have is distinguishing what color black I use in PS. A couple times my blacks didn't match when i viewed them on a matte screen but looked fine on glossy.
Oh and no more sparkles like my old MBP. The ACD's have the sparkle and it drove me insane!!! I like having nothing standing in the way of me and each individual pixel. Well besides the clear plastic layers.

Matte is much more vibrant, the colours really pop out. It also is very bright. It has no glare, and is extremely crisp. The colors are accurate.

Yes all that was written above is talking about matte, that was not a typo.

Glossy is much more so then, since that's the main marketing point, and it's a proven fact that glossy screens are more vibrant, have a much better pop, and are much brighter (causing eye strain to some), and are crisper.

The colors are more accurate in the matte though, so that's a correct point.

Lol yeah, I realize that's what glossy has over matte, I was being facetious in order to show my personal <3 for matte. But yeah its all a matter of opinion.

Agreed. I wasn't trying to be too much of a smart @$$ or anything. I love my 17" matte display as well, but mainly because it's the best monitor I have ever worked on. I think my would be having eye orgasms if it were glossy though.

And yes, Matte is a breeze to clean, I don't have to scrub like I do with glossy.

I'll add my question here instead of opening a new thread...

I have seen LCD screens fade with age - they become less bright, contrast drops... This is the case of my current Dell laptop screen, and if you put it next to a new screen (well, any screen for that matter), you see a marked difference... I'm surprised I can stand looking at it... It is a matte screen.

So my question is just do matte screens fade more compared to glossy screens? Or are they totally unrelated, and more to do with the screen technology (ie LED screens won't fade as much)?

I'm pretty sure that the fade comes from the backlight, so I would think that the type of finish (glossy or matte) wouldn't matter, but the back light technology (ie LED vs CCFL) would be the determining factor...

Look at it this way:

Glossy looks great, nice colors and contrast, but youre worried that reflections might irritate you (and your eyes) when working in a bright environment.

Matte, looks good. No reflections. True Colors.

Ergo; there is a risk that you will regret the glossy version, therefore, go with matte, bc you know wont regret it!!

Yes, fading has to do with the backlight and not the coating on the display. Plus, older LCDs just weren't that bright. The 12" Power Book had a very dim display, which is one big reason why I would love to have one for nostalgia purposes, but the display is dim.

The reflection in glossy thing is very overrated. And not having a brighter display with glossy, may be more of an irritation. ;)

got glossy, had to sell it

I got a MB in glossy, had to sell it. The glare and distraction of the screen in any type of lighting was too much and created a great deal of eye straing. My #1 GF is convinced that is what caused my Bells Palsy back in 2006. I won't buy another glossy ever - including unfortunatly a new imac. I REALLY wish they would go with a regular screen. I'm waiting to get a new MBP in matter and pair it with a sweet 26" monitor.

You could've bought this for your MacBook before you sold it:

Tried it

I did try one of these exact covers, really took a bite out of what is great brightness.

I'm thinking about saying screw waiting for the MBP update and ordering my MBP so i can get acquainted with it before college in the fall (PC user so far). I'll be living in a dorm room, but can any other college students on here lemme know what screen you suggest? Matte or Glossy? Thanks alot.

Matte all the way. I hate glossy. Matte displays colors more accurately than glossy, plus you can actually use it outside.

After reading this thread, we potential MBP buyers are going to be more confused than we were before doing so. Some people are saying that matte is great outside while glossy is not readable outside; others are saying the exact opposite. WTF?

I love my glossy iMac because I have it set up where I have complete control over the area lighting. No glare at all. My only complaint is that it hurts my eyes, but I think that may have more to do with the size of the screen than anything else. However, I don't think the screen would be usable outside or if I had bright overhead lighting I couldn't control (like some offices).

I'll probably get a matte MBP simply because it seems like it would be more versatile in a wider variety of lighting scenarios.

I have a glossy. I love it.

At the end of the day its personal preference, you need to go try both out.

I picked the glossy screen for my MBP, never tried one before, and now I probably will never go back to Matte.

The colors are more vibrant, making the eye candy look just so much better. :apple:

My local Apple Store has only 2 macbook pro on display, one 15" and one 17" and I would like to confirm if they are matte. Shouldn't this be possible in the settings somewhere?

No it won't say in the settings; it will only say on the box if it's glossy; so see what it looks like in-store, if the screen on the MBP looks like the one on the MB or MBA then it's glossy, if it looks like the Apple Cinema Display then it's matte.

The MB glossy has a lot more glare and uses CCFL lighting, so I wouldn't directly compare it to the MBP glossy. When I was in my LAS (local apple store) I compared the MB, the MBP matte and the MBP glossy and I personally found the MBP glossy best suited to what I was looking for. There is quite a difference between the MB glossy and the MBP glossy, I'd say the MB glossy is closer to other manufacturers glossy screens (i.e. more glare).

heres a suggestion: ASK THE STAFF! :)

As many before have said it does come down to personal preference. I'm firmly in the Glossy camp. After seeing a glossy display for the first time I knew it was for me. I'm happy that display manufacturers are starting to offer glossy 24" panels now (thank you Gateway) so that I can have a glossy display on my Mini :)
