Well I kind of did both... bought 15" MBP in March with a matte screen... then bought a HP 22" monitor in glossy added apple remote keyboard and it's the best of both worlds... big glossy screen at home and a viewable anywhere laptop.

Well tomorrow I'm ordering a 17" Macbook Pro 2.6GHz with 4GB and I'm ordering it with the Matte Hi-Resolution Widescreen Display. I'm a professional photographer and to get my photos exactly like I want them when I have them printed I have to calibrate my screen. I currently use a ColorVision Spyder 2 Pro to calibrate my screen which is a matte. I would love to have the glossy but it will not be accurate enough when I calibrate it.

It will be, and as far as color correction goes the type of display isn't as important as the numbers on info palette.

But having the matte does help.

Hi,
I decided to buy a Matte but I just want one last confirmation. Is the matte screen also good for gaming ? Or the difference is the same as for any other screen usage.

Or for people who also choose NOT to buy high gloss kitchens and highly polished chrome accessories for their cars.

or also for people that is very ugly and dont like to see themselves at the mirror :p
Haha!

Or for good looking people who just happen to have a personality and a brain and therefore don't have narcissistic tendencies.

Well, as for me, I will try to give you a serious response figuring all of these other people are taking your question as a joke. Glossy screens tend to boost colors better, and give a somewhat better image quality, their negative part though, is that they are highly reflective, and do not work well in high sunlight areas, or outdoors, if that might become an issue for you. But as for gaming, there is no difference in response time between the to, so take your pick. I would suggest that if you really are not sure of which one to pick, then go to your local Apple Store and ask a shopping assistant for their advice, and to see the differences between the displays. Once you see the display in person, you will have a better idea as to which one you want to pick. But if you are not near an Apple Store, then find another local computer store that you could see the differences in the screens at, granted it won't be the same exact screen types, but it will give you a better understanding of the differences between the two.

And thank you for running a search on this topic, it highly helps as there are already thousands of threads on this issue, and there are about 10 or so new ones a week all with the same exact title that the user could have found if they searched, and almost all of them revolve around the same issues that the user is having.

Thanks,
JML

Well said. I never thought this would be such a long drawn out decision but when I initially bought a MBP I bought it in matte but didn't open the box right away which was a lot of self control on my part! After getting it home I started thinking about why I bought the Matte and it was because of the salesman's suggestion..I didn't really spend the time to look at the two screens side by side so I quickly did a search on You Tube and found quite a few videos with "just this" debate! I actually found a video where some guy returned his " MBP with the matte display" after having it for 2 weeks and got a glossy instead...I didn't want to get hit with a restocking charge so I slept on it and the next day decided to go back to the Apple Store to look at the 2 screens side by side and see which one "I" preferred...funny..when I got back to the store I ran into another sales guy who was trying to convince me to stick with the matte..My thought was.."what's the deal?..are these guys told to push the matte because they can't rid of them or what?" Anyways...after spending more time than I should of comparing the 2 I decided to trade the matte in for a glossy mainly because the colors on the glossy were deeper, brighter and more colorful!

Personal preference is what it boils down to...take the time to look at both screens and decide based on your feeling not what anyone tells you..It appears to me that there are more glossy fans on this thread than matte..but don't let that be the driving decision. Look at both and go with your feeling..and once you make your decision don't look back...be happy with it!

IMHO...Glossy rules! :D :apple:

Thank you for your advices.

ok this is what I wanted to know

I 've already been to an Apple store. Not to get the assistant's opinion (I usually don't really trust pple who wants to sell something; it's better to ask on a forum :) ) but just to compare both. I was actually playing around with the matte one and I haven't even realized it was matte. When I tried the glossy I was just too annoyed by the reflection. I currently have a VAIO with a glossy so I think it is time for a change.

And thank you for running a search on this topic ...
;)

cheers,

Thank you for your advices....
No problem, glad to help, figuring you might have been the first person in a month to actually run a search on this topic, good luck with your purchase and I hope you get it soon!

Like everyone said, go to the store and compare them side by side yourself.

Personally, I went with Glossy. I've never really had a problem with glare, and side-by-side, the Glossy screen looked MUCH better than the matte.

My $0.02.

Glossy sucks the big whahooli - People say the screen is better for movies, but most movies have many dark atmospheric scenes where most of the shot is black - suddenly your the movie star and you realise you've bought a laptop/mirror.

I bought a black macbook a year ago and it only has the glossy available - the screen scratched very easily and shows up in certain lighting.
Then I bought a macbook pro a few months ago and avoided the gloss like the plague, the matte is excellent you don't notice any finger smudges for months and it is much more soothing on the eyes if your working on it for a long time.

This was one of the reasons I went for a macbook pro instead of the new imac's. The reflection on the new imac's looks ridiculous , so I stuck with my old white one and went for a laptop with matte
(i hope apple know about how much people don't like the extra high gloss and offer the next imac with matte again)

Glossy!

I didn't even think a second about matte vs glossy when I ordered my mbp (just opened it last night btw after letting it sit for a week in it's box ... love it). In actuality, I would have even paid MORE for a glossy. Sush ... don't tell apple :)

Here's why... I'm of the generation that developed the PC. When I started out we didn't have keyboards let alone displays. Punch cards and crude printouts were the sheet. So yeah, I've seen it all and spent enormous amounts in funds on h/w over the years. Everything ... you name it I've had to use it.

Keep in mind though ... I'm a programmer/mathematician and not a graphical artist. But I am very aware of the needs of both sides.

Matte reminds me of the way it was.

Glossy is all that everyone is saying; bright, deep, colourful, (semi)reflective. Have not noticed any difference in eye strain or fatigue and I spend 10+ hrs a day on this thing. I can see that a matte may be easier on the eyes using like I do. But maybe I'm just super accustomed to it.

You WILL regret EITHER if you did not compare the 2 together. No matter what you think. But I honestly think that you would regret going matte more so than going gloss. It's easier to forgive a gloss for being excessive but MUCH, MUCH harder to forgive being dull or inadequate. Think about it.

Yeah .. try any gloss vs. matte. True it is indeed subjective. But I think that you would really regret not having the brightest, shiniest you could than vise versa.

All the above holds true unless you really are a TRUE photographer/artist. There are many here who claim that the glossy doesn't meet their means. But I have seen few to none who are "Professional" grade.

Besides ... if you get the glossy and later decide that you want a matte ... well all you have to do is take a wade of fine sandpaper and brush your gloss to a matt. heheh

D.

Does this really work or is this a joke?
