Ha! Downloaded 5GB and then it said it couldn't verify, that maybe the installer was corrupt, etc. So now I'm downloading again. 5GB all over again. LMAO

I think it's not a good idea to make the OS free. When many people make so much effort for it, they need to charge it accordingly. Am I missing some? I like more a common sense...

The people who are making it are getting paid by Apple (or so you would assume.)

As noted in other threads, Apple probably subsidize OS X development with iPhone or Mac related revenues.

Its smart to get all computers on the same platform. They will make the money when they sell new macs.

Its like with iphone and how over 80% it may be more are always using the current OS where as with android its really split what version they are using.

It makes it easier for everyone when most people are on the same OS.

Just got home from work so a little late to the party but very very shocked they made it free. I was expecting the usual $20. Downloading now.

Only here would someone complain about something being free. Evidently they feel that making it free will be more beneficial to the company than what they would make by selling it. Apple did not get the massive stack of cash they have by leaving money on the table, if there is a dollar to be made they will make it.

UUUUUGGGGGGGGGG.

Broke ClickToFlash and AdBlock.

Is browsing the internet usually this bad for the rest of the world?????????

So, I get home from work, fire up the iMac, start the upgrade and ........1 day 20 hours!!!!! Guess everyone else got home from work as well. :):):)

After the upgrade is done does it leave a .dmg anywhere I can copy to a USB to load on the other machines in the house? (MacAir and wife's Mac Mini)

You need to backup the install app. Like ML, the installer disappears after installation.

haha, I don't usually complain about what apple does... I think what Steve Jobs tried to do was somehow matching with my things... But somehow this free thing makes me wonder... very unlike-steve jobs... I don't mean he is perfect... though.

Some people just bitch about everything. They would have bitched if it was 20 bucks.

No, not if you run the upgrade/install. It deletes the installer afterwards - as I found to my cost.
I'm downloading it again to put on a USB.
The installer should be in your Applications folder when d/l is finished.

How and where and when do I do that? (Bit new to OSX)

Once the download is finished, a screen will pop up telling you to press next to continue with the installation. Close out of that window. Look in your Applications folder. The install app should be there. If it isn't, move it to the Applications folder. Once you have gotten to that point, perform the following steps in the post below. Very easy. It will allow you to create a bootable USB install stick. You can then use that to install the OS on other computers or the one you are using now, should something happen. Will save you time from having to download 5 GB again.

Edited to add: On my late 2011 MBP it took me 52 - 53 minutes to download the OS and create a USB stick earlier today. Installation was 45 minutes, give or take a minute or two.

NICE! I'm already running the GM but it's great that Apple threw a freebie to everyone. I'm downloading it to Archive and make my USB/DVD installer back-up media with.

I have GM 1 Build 13A598. I want to get the new version from the Mac App Store but when i click download nothing happens. I've also deleted the 13A598 installer and tried it again but still it's not downloading. btw I'm not a dev. and got the first gm through torrents.

You may be number 17million in line. It is prime time for most people. And many are tying to do the same thing as you.

hmm…possiby! well thanks…i'll try it again later.

quick note. anyone that has xbmc know if it runs fine on mavericks that's out now. i know that the gm was having problems and it would keep crashing even though gm is final.

After a few issues initially, the download speeds are maxing out my internet connection. I'm looking at 20 minutes to download the file. There doesn't seem to be an issue with the servers.
