Hello,

My question is simple: Are Apple's "Max" models too big to be viable for everyday use?

Indeed, considering my needs and these incredible specificities, I seriously ask myself the question to acquire the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I have already taken the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Compared to my iPhone X, the difference does not seem monumental (less than between a 5S and 6S+). Nevertheless, it's impossible to know if size is a daily problem. Do you have any feedback to give me about your experience?

Do the advantages in photos, videos, and especially in visual comfort make you forget the size of the phone?

I'm not used to writing a message with one hand, even with the X, and I have difficulty getting it to fit in my pocket. At this level, it won't change me. But it's clear that with a Pro Max, when you take your phone out, it's much less discreet.

What do you think about it?

I work outdoors and 99% of the time have my XS Max in my front pocket. 98% of the times I don’t have issues with my phone in my pocket while I’m walking at work. The only issue I have is making sure my iPhone is in my fanny pack when bad weather sets in.

I’d say it certainly depends on who you ask and their lifestyle. For me personally my physical comfort trumps visual comfort. I don’t feel the need to stay connected as they say. I tend to save the video watching for when I am home where I can watch on a larger device. Granted I’m not into photography either so there’s that.

For me it is the weight. I tried the XS Pro Max before going back down in size to the XS Pro, which itself was a little too heavy for my taste (especially when reading while lying down). I now have a se 2020 but am waiting for a 12 Pro to be delivered on Friday (but may well return it and pre order the mini in a few weeks). I am tempted by the 12 Pro Max camera features but I am almost certain I would end up regretting the purchase.

I’m a power user of my phone. On my MBP, I used to video editing and watch series. I go on forum with my phone, text with my phone, record videos for my YT channel with my phone etc. Honestly, even if I have a X model, I have never it on my pocket. I’m afraid this latter falls on my pocket and when I’m sitting, get the phone on my pocket is disconfortable. So, I have the habits to take a bag on my phone is on this bag. Winter is cool because we have some jacket with big pocket to get on it.

Bigger people with bigger hands like bigger phones. I bet it’s really based on someone’s size and not really anything else.

I have a Watch with cellular and I sit down to watch media on my iPhone so I don't really care how big the Max phones are. I'll be getting the 12 Pro Max because I want the best camera, just as I did when I bought the 8+ I'm now replacing.

You get $800 off for still having that 8 plus.

I had two Max Models. My wrist hurts as my thumb constantly tries to reach the furthest end on the phone.
I don't know if it is just me. My biggest complain is probably having trouble bending down to tie my shoes when my phone is in my pants pockets 😂

It’s only slightly larger than the 8 Plus (the largest iPhone I’ve ever owned), so I expect the experience will be similar.

The 8 Plus fit in my pants pocket, although it did not slide in as easily as smaller phones, and I could feel that it was there. That was something of an advantage, because I would never accidentally leave home without it.

It was less comfortable to hold when talking on a phone, but I use the camera apps far more often than the phone.

In camera mode, the larger screen is an advantage.

After a few weeks using the 8 Plus, I no longer noticed the larger size. When I replaced it with a Xs, however, the new phone suddenly felt very small. It took me longer to adjust to that than it did to the 8 Plus.

I find these large phones to be uncomfortable to use. To each his or her own. I personally wish they would stop designing with larger phones representing the higher-tier devices. I am a photographer and like having a capable camera phone to provide some more casual photo capability alongside my camera, but I‘m unwilling to get the larger model. So the 12 pro will have to be “good enough.”

The 6.7 is supposed to be only slightly larger than the 6.5. The weight is the same.

Right, but I already found the size and weight of the 6.5” phones to be too much, so having an even bigger screen, even if the total size of the phone is barely bigger, won’t work for me. The 5.8”/6.1” phones are a much better match for me. And I already found the Xs Max to be way too heavy for my comfort.

I am 6’7” tall with hands that span a 10.5” paper plate. For me, I can do everything on the Max sized phones one handed if I want. I have no issues with the phone fitting in pockets, the weight doesn’t bother my hand, and the extra screen negates any need for a tablet (I loathe tablets) and I hardly use my MacBook anymore.

That said, the phone is too big to fit in my vehicles’ cupholders, it does tend to weigh down gym shorts if I’m doing yard work or walking, it’s always going to be more noticeable in every day use due to the size and weight.

Lastly, I am just one example. Questions like this are hard to answer because someone not my size likely will not share the same experiences as I. We can all share our individual insight but at the end of the day, it’s truly a personal decision.

I have small hands and wrists. My wrist is 5 1/2” around. I use the Max and will do so this year. I appreciate the screen real estate. Weight does not hurt me one bit.

Now that I have cases, the 2mm height is fine with me. However, if the Max grows beyond this in future releases, I may drop down to the next largest size. It’s not a heaviness factor, it’s what will fit in my handbags, cross bodies, and pockets without taking up too much room or flipping out.

It's not that big one, on my opinion. Please see comparison between my current Spigen cover for 11 and the new thinner Anewsir cover for 12 Pro Max, just arrived through Amazon. The 2 are with same width , while the 12 Pro one is 8 mm longer . I did some tests and I'm convinced I can manage it without issues...

It's going to vary person-to-person based on how big their hands are, what style clothes they wear, and whether or not needing to use the gesture to shift the screen down on occasion is no problem or feels annoying & burdensome.

I'm 6'2" with big hands and was fine using my 11 pro max for the last year in terms of screen dimensions. What I'm *less* happy with is the weight in pockets especially when wearing gym shorts or thin pajamas/sweat pants/etc.

For the past several years I've been getting the largest models but this year I'm just going for an iPhone 12 Pro vs pro max because I've become increasingly annoyed by my 11 pro max's weight vs other phones I've used. Whether or not that'll be a decision I'll be happy with remains to be seen... :)

I hope whichever way you go is the right decision for you!

It comes down to personal preference and what is more important to you. I don't do much one handed texting so to me the advantage of the larger screen wins.
