How does it compare to the most expensive version of the 16” Intel MacBook Pro?

I'd go for the Max simply for the four monitor support. It's a shame the Pro only support two external monitors, likely an artificially limit to force people to the Max that want more. But I suppose I'm in the minority of people who use four monitors. It's overkill, but it's what I'm used on my Thinkpad and I don't want to go back to less now.

Apple today announced new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M1 Pro and M1 Max Apple silicon chips, and the new machines come with higher than expected price tags.

The 14-inch model starts at $1,999, while the 16-inch model starts at $2,499. There are upgrades available for the chip, SSD, and memory upgrades depending on the model.

A fully maxed 16-inch MacBook Pro tops out at $6,099, featuring a top of the line M1 Max chip with 10-core CPU and 32-core GPU, 64GB unified memory, and 8TB SSD.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro models can be customized with the same specs. A 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max, 64GB unified memory, and 8TB SSD is priced at $5,899.

Pre-orders for the new MacBook Pro models started today and the first machines will be arriving to customers next Tuesday. Fully customized and upgraded MacBook Pro models won't ship out until December.

“Higher than expected price tags” Expected by who? They are literally exactly the price points I expected.

The next iMac will probably be 30" but if Apple can do a non pro XDR like display, I'll sell the iMac and do MBP + Display like I used to.
Something equivalent to the display in the 27" iMac that can be used with these Macbook Pros would probably get me to buy one instead of continuing to wait for the 27" iMac's M1 replacement.

Hell, the machine would likely stay home much of the time, but being able to take my MAIN Mac with me when I travel would be amazing.

There's no doubt that the new MacBook Pro is a great device. And Apple has made it easy for me: It's simply too expensive for my budget. So I know to either go for the MacBook Air or stick with iPads. I have an iMac for whatever I don't do on the other two.

I seriously hate these headlines. Just configure it without the 8TB of storage.
Yep... $2400 for storage upgrade alone is the bonkers part. Having the absolute max-specced model (other than storage) for $3700 (only $3360 on edu discount) including 64GB of RAM really doesn't seem like that bad of a price... or at least no worse than expected.

Does anybody know if it supports HDMI 2.1? I think the specs say that the HDMI port only allows for up to 4k60, but wonder if the thunderbolt 4 port supports hdmi 2.1 through an adapter.
Per the Apple store page: "HDMI digital video output - Support for one display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz"
So, no, it is not demonstrating the capability that HDMI 2.1 would provide.

If you are not a pro, this "seems" expensive. If you are, and make your money on billable time doing pro work, its not bad at all.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a second computer to double productivity?

If you want to argue that's not how productivity works - yes. Exactly.

There's nothing more frustrating than being held up by hardware when you're trying to get work done. Waiting on a computer can be worse than being stuck in traffic! Pros will pay whatever it takes to reduce this.

I’ve always been a MBP user. However, with these new MBPs, I have to say these are definitely for professionals, not your average joe who just wants a MBP. If you’re not a legit professional or creative, i feel like you shouldn’t be buying these noteboois, in my opinion.

Alas, i just know some 18 year old at his or her local community college, is going to have a maxed out 2021 MBP…

People can buy whatever they want to. I’m retired, but I just bought one. You’re telling me that I shouldn’t have?N

I think you missed the point of @Prof. 's message... You are in a completely different financial situation to his example, "an 18 year old at her local community college" that probably doesn't have the money to spend that you do. I have personally seen a friend buy a MBP wayyyy above what she actually needed on the advice of a friend who just was like "yeah get it". She needed to make a financially smart decision to grow herself & her business and probably spent ~$700 more on that than she needed to. She just needed a computer that can do the regular thing (answering emails, accessing google docs, zoom)

And tbh, if you're not in video editing, colour grading or deploying VMs or game development (or Youtube testing & reviewing), then you won't need this M1 Pro / Max.

If its just a toy, then good for you. But then its also rather silly as those who buy Lamborghinis and drive it in Bangkok traffic. You could easily have a MacBook and it still be a great fun, super sleek, toy too (without the expensive fix when smthg happens to it).

That's about what my used Ford Fusion is worth right now. We are back to the days of high end computers costing the same as used cars... but with HELLA performance.

$6100 in a laptop for what I imagine is going to outperform a Threadripper with an RTX 3080? Then uhhhh bring it. (Just not to *my* wallet)

I ordered the same thing except with a 2TB drive.
Ditto, but with 32 GB of RAM

My current working user space is around 800gb (moving archived projects to and from network and external storage), but since this is going to last me several years and the hard drive isn't replaceable I doubled my current usage.

It was a pretty hard bill to swallow, but the MAX looks like a fine processor - especially with current GPU prices.
