I’m sure others are saying it too, but some of these options (SSD, RAM, and it’s M1) are really making me think this is coming. There’s no way they do all of this and not stick macOS on it, right?? Maybe I’m too hopeful, but iPadOS and MacOS on this would be killer
I've been saying it all night: you think it'll be fun and easy using MacOS with a finger? Just right-clicking would be a pain in the ass.

You think Apple is going to force the OS of a different product onto users that may not want it? People dock their iPads and go: "WTF is this?! Where's my stuff? How do you... What happened to my iPad?!"

The base price of the 12.9 inch iPad Pro in 2015: $799
The base price of the 12.9 inch iPad Pro in 2021: $1,099.
Price of the original Bondi Blue iMac, base config?
$1299
Price of the 2021 iMac M1 base config?
$1299

Although I'd love it, macOS is not coming to the iPad Pro. It is not.

The main reason for that is a stupid one, nonetheless it is a reason.

Apple [management] has always stated that:
- They didn't want to mix/merge both OS in one machine,
- They didn't want to put a touchscreen on the Mac,
- They didn't want to add pencil support to the iPhone.

And they're absolutely too proud and too stubborn to back down. Microsoft making fun of Apple for releasing an iPad running both iOS and macOS is Cook's worst nightmare. They just cannot be wrong, can they?

Apple has already shown, from today’s iMac announcement, what future M1 MacOS portables are going to look like, once they are designed around the M1. They will look like ipad. (As was pointed out during today’s presentation, the iMac is the first apple product actually designed around apple silicon).

So, in The not to distant future, you will have a device that is essentially an ipad, but running macos. And macos can run ipad apps. At that point you can choose - but an ipad and run ipados, or buy a macbook and run macos, along with ios apps, and both will be very similar hardware. At that point, your complaining will amount to little more than a complaint about naming convention.

I haven't written anything about "what future M1 MacOS portables are going to look like". Can you please read before calling one's take stupid? I'm talking about bringing macOS to the iPad.

Not to mention that the core of your writing makes no sense. No, the next MacBook Pro will not look like an iPad lmao. It'll still have a clamshell mechanism, a keyboard and a trackpad, no touchscreen, so nothing like an iPad.

I know what you’re talking about, and that’s exactly what I addressed. Apple will NEVER put macos on an “ipad,” because, instead, they are going to make ipad-like macbooks that run macos. There is no point to putting macos on an ipad.

OH CRAP!
I'll get a 1TB 16GB refurb
SCREW 5G. it's a rip off
Yeah! It’s normal to always have the iPhone whenever I want to use an iPad outside anyways... the hotspot works magnificently well. Love that combo.

I got an iPadPro 11” and was thinking of giving this a pass for now but I like your plan... now, should it be all in 12.9” and go all XDR and whatnot or stay 11” (dig this middle ground form factor honestly).

Great machine for me, but my use case is unusual (and I don’t need the 2 TB).

we are writing special AI code that runs locally on an M1 mac. We want a sexy portable demo. We are going to try to run our demo on the iPad with a swiftUI UI, which we hope will port over reasonably well.

So there is a use for this machine, and I expect that there are tens of other similar cases.

I am fine with my 12.9 inches QHD AMOLED Samsung Tab S7+ with expandable storage, stylus pen included, WhatsApp and other call function integrated for $1200.....prices are getting insane in the Apple world! Staying away from iPad Pros! 👃👃👃

You know, EVERY time I see “REAL FILE SYSTEM” or “REAL FILE MANAGEMENT” I usually don’t even ask anymore because it’s usually nothing having to do with a file system (iOS, iPadOS, and macOS use the same filesystem) or file management (not being able to put files on the desktop). But not being able to search? I don’t even need “Files” for that, I can swipe down from the home screen and type to search for files/folders :)
Plus, since iOS and iPadOS ask you where you want to save items, just create a Downloads folder (on the phone and/or iCloud) and move the document later like you would do on a 'real' computer.

I can’t see that happening, but I do think Final Cut and Logic might be coming.
I can't honestly see other reasons for this need for power other than those pro-apps.

What does the new one do that the iPad Pro from 2018 doesn't (forget the camera nonsense)

It's more expensive than a fully loaded brand new iMac. I can't figure this out.

iPadOS 15 has GOT to be able to do more than it does now, else why put all that computing power in it?

Then again, I've been thinking the same thing since the first iPad Pro came out and I still don't see the value of an iPad Pro over an iPad Air - and I OWN a 12.9" iPad Pro! 😅

It’s their personality. I had to put them on ignore, that’s what I did and it’s the best decision ever.

The old chips so outstripped iPadOS that it is hard to imagine the M1 making much difference with the current OS. My old A10 iPad ran iPadOS 14 without a hitch. So, it makes sense if iPadOS 15 will be a major step forward or Apple will allow M1 iPads to dual boot to MacOS or there will be some amazing new Apps that really take advantage of the performance. Otherwise, it seem like a lot of muscle you won't be using.

I don’t think I created mine, it was already there, so I used it :) Is that default in the Files app actually?

No you don't. And no the MBP is not turning into an iPad. Nevermind mate.

The question is if it's only the 2 TB one that has a higher amount of RAM, I could be tempted for 512 GB if it has more RAM than the 128 GB one.
I saw something here yesterday that both the 1TB and 2TB tiers get the 16GB RAM.

No, it hasn't. Not remotely. Not in the slightest. I don't think you have the first idea what that even means.

Despite the horrid example that Windows has set for the world by just shipping a KBAM OS on touch displays, that does not work, and will not work.

This isn't about "Touch support". Touch is not something you just add support for.

iOS and iPadOS are a Touch OS designed for touch from the ground up. MacOS is not. You cannot and will not be able to run macOS on an iPad Pro.
Nothing says that you’d need to be using them iPad Pro via touch when it boots into MacOS mode. You could have it docked with a full-size monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Right, except Apple would never ship that. If it "required" any of that to work, it is a non starter, which is why it won't happen.

Seriously bud: Apple won't even give you multi-user on the iPad. You think they'd give you multi-OS?

I've been thinking that it highlights how underpowered the new iMac is. This is just further confirmation that the M1 is still an iPad chip, and when Apple makes a chip that benefits from the desktop architecture there's going to be a massive performance boost.
Then how are the M1-equipped MacBooks running circles around the Intel-based ones?

It’s all about need. If the MacBook, with “free” keyboard & trackpad came with unlimited cellular data then I’d think about getting a MacBook. Since I rely heavily on cellular data and never needed to consider WiFi, it’s the iPad for me. Both great devices.
You can get a cellular external device for your MacBook.
