It’s not that they raise your tax rate, its that they raise your property valuation. At least here in MD. And lets not talk about how they raise your Social Security tax ceiling every year but never raise the “rate” just one more way to get their pound of flesh without you feeling it.
That still doesn't change the fact that property valuation increases are capped at 2% where I live.

And this is the kind of thing that makes me slowly back away from Apple as my technology provider of choice....

I get "there are pros who will gladly pay for this", but it reinforces the idea that Apple thinks iOS is a full-fledged computing solution (as they do less and less with substantial OS X updates).

I’m fairly certain we are moving into Mac territory with this one. I won’t be surprised if it can switch into macOS mode when connected to a Magic Keyboard. Hopefully we won’t need to wait for the next version of macOS for this.

Doesn’t it just make more sense to make a MacBook Pro with detachable keyboard and touchscreen

That’s what the Files app is for, you can do everything with your ipad internal storage that way, etc. It’s a like PC behind the scenes What I hate is the fact that my files get deleted there first and choose ICloud storage over physical storage
Yeah, but it doesn’t work. In the Files app, you still have to try to find which “location” your file is in, and you can’t do it just by typing the file name, a la Spotlight on MacOS. The apps are all sandboxed, and don’t share an overall Finder path.

Apple today unveiled new iPad Pro models that look remarkably similar to existing iPad Pro options, but which have an M1 chip, much like Apple's Mac lineup.

ipad-pro.jpg

The 11-inch iPad Pro model starts at $799, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro model is much more expensive due to its mini-LED display, starting at $1,099.

Both models come with up to 2TB storage and have higher RAM amounts at higher storage tiers, which can drive costs up.

A cellular 12.9-inch iPad Pro with 5G connectivity and the 2TB storage option costs a total of $2,399, which is actually more expensive than the highest-tier M1 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with all available upgrades.

The maxed out 11-inch cellular model will run you $2,099, which is just about as expensive as the maxed out M1 MacBook Pro. Neither of those price points includes an Apple Pencil or a Magic Keyboard, both of which can be purchased separately.

Apple's new iPad Pro models will be available for order on April 30 and will ship out in May.

I like the look of the white MKB, but it will get filthy in no time.

It would work fine with the Magic Keyboard. Detach for switching from macOS to iPadOS mode.
Exactly. The iPad Pro and the Macs now have exactly the same internals. Apple telling me that I should buy two extremely expensive devices with exactly the same internals because they've arbitrarily decided to limit what those devices can do is preposterous.

There's no reason at all that the iPad Pro couldn't become the holy grail that Microsoft has been chasing for decades: the everything computer. When you're using it as a tablet, it's an iOS device. Dock it and it becomes a macOS device. I'd buy that right now, this very second.

As it stands, Apple seems to believe that I should buy an M1 device to do iPad things and a basically identical M1 device to do non-iPad things, because, hey, that's more money for them and less convenience for me.

All that money, and you still can’t resize windows. Maybe Apple was serious when they say “What’s a computer?” Someone show them! Still 4:3 external monitor support? Lol this is a LUXURY DEVICE, then MAYBE a productivity. Setting aside the 5 edge cases where y’all run an entire hospital off your iPad, this device looks sweet and I’m getting one.

Oh what times we're living in. $2400 will now get you a tablet... or a scalped midrange GPU. Decisions decisions...

They are really going to have to overhaul iPadOS for this thing. I thought for a few seconds they were going to show it dual boot Big Sur when connected to the magic keyboard.
If it could do this, I would sell my M1 Air and my 2018 iPad Pro and buy this in a heartbeat. iOS is okay for some things, but honestly, anything I do that is related to my job really needs a full blown OS. When I've worked to just live with iPad OS--which I tried to do when I originally got the iPad Pro and the Magic Keyboard--there are just too many trade-offs when doing what seemed like very simple things. So my iPad is mostly just a glorified YouTube viewer and Kindle. Still though, I do love the idea of this upgrade and will be interested to see the new mini-LED screens when we can easily go back inside Apple Stores to check them out.

I think this is just absurd. That much for a tablet that only a really small segment will use. I am an iPad Pro users, have been for years and am on my second one.... But these specs, this price.... Even as a daily driver using it for meeting notices and to draw (designer here) I will never push it. I would rather buy an M1 MPB and an Intuos and save a bit.

This staggered approach to product releases was fine for a while but now it is just driving consumers nuts.
At one point this was a clever marketing strategy. But now? The ship has sailed and the strategy has worn out. I say give the iPad mini some love, damn it. I want a new form factor for this product. It needs it and there is a large business market for it. Why should we have to wait and keep on waiting as new products are released and while products with the new form factor sees multiple generations and updates? It's ridiculous. This problem is also represented in the new iMac situation. Why drop just the 24"? Where is the larger sibling built on the same platform? Now I have to wait even though the 24" dropped? So now I cannot replace my 2018 iMac, knowing a new rig is out but not in the size I need? I am not downsizing - especially when I know in a year a larger size is really likely to drop. So I am forced to either buy two machines over time or wait another year for M1 (and other features) on my main design rig. I am pretty frustrated.

Why would they sell you one device when they can sell you two?

Microsoft makes the perfect devices for me. Unfortunately, they run Windows. If Apple made a MacBook equivalent of the Surface devices I'd be all over it, and they'd be 1000X better than the Surface devices because unlike Windows, Macs (via iOS) have an amazing touch-first app ecosystem ready to go. Microsoft has been making touch devices for years without any compelling reason to have a touch device in the first place. Apple has all the reason in the world to make a hybrid device and refuses, because ... I don't really know. Just to be annoying, seems like.

The iPad Pro can get more storage than the iMac. :D

iPad Pro is smaller, faster, and cheaper than the iMac base edition. The iMac gets a built in stand, better speakers, extra port(s), ethernet and higher cost and limited storage options.

The iMac goes up to 2TB and 16GB RAM. Why do people keep saying otherwise? It is right there on Apple‘s website.

I'll happily keep using my 2020 12.9" Pro. There is nothing on this new model that is a must have for that kind of money.

Never mind all the other stuff.. What happens to current 12.9's and 11's? Discounts I hope. I want an 11 inch at IPAD Air pricing!

With the magic keyboard with trackpad, the only way you can use the ipad is on landscape mode, believe it or not I flip between my desktop and other devices and pretend to touch the screen, sometimes it’s just as easy and you can’t go back.
My brain has been rewired such that, when I see a big dialog button for the thing I want to do, I would MUCH rather just tap that button and be done. No, I gotta go through the whole “find my pointer” dance.

Not sure what you mean. There’s a search bar right at the top of the screen. Typing in that doesn’t give you the files you’re looking for?

Given the new iPad Pro uses the same M1 platform, it's easy to compare price of the 12.9 iPad Pro ($1400) with the M1 MacBook Air ($1250) both equipped with 512GB (not comparing iPadOS vs macOS here, just the hardware specs)

So for + $150, you get Mini-LED, tactile screen with pencil support, more speakers & microphones, cameras & LiDAR and sensors (gyro, barometer, compass, FaceID, accelerometer, etc.)

... but you lose a keyboard and a trackpad.

Fair or not fair?

Seems on par according to me.

Not consumers in general, but certainly you. Apple did say that the transition to M1 would take 2 years, so that’s a pretty clear indicator that, since we’re still in year one, that the device YOU want to buy is likely still on the way.
