Alright, I got a 9C9E first, after a replacement (not because of the screen, had a slight vibration issue), I got a 9C9F.
9C9E - Good blacks,
very bright. Good vertical viewing angles. Colors seem to get too glaring (the lower the brightness, the more natural they look). After installing one of those Spyder calibrations someone had posted so kindly (they turned out to be the best after several tries), I got the best balance. Blues still go into purples too quickly. Skin tones shift towards yellow at highlights. I also got that strange effect of the google-link blue text appearing totally purple while scrolling down - weird! Most importantly, though, I got comparably bad
horizontal viewing angles. Those affect each eye individually, resulting in a subtle, shimmering "hologram-effect". It's as if your eye can't focus on the surface. I first thought it's just a glossy screen reflection issue... until I got:
9C9F - The Apple Screen Hardware Lottery jackpot! Less bright, worse vertical viewing angles (shifts towards yellow more quickly), a slight brightness bleed at the bottom half... but I don't care. This screen is damn-near perfect. After installing the calibration profile from
here (
Ncx5-Spyder-Pro.icc.zip , a little cold, but excellent balance) I got colors rivaling my trusty CRT. Also the screen is much nicer to simply look at. Natural skin tones, smoother gradients. Suddenly the glossy screen seems less of an issue, too, somehow.
Anyway... both screens are miles above the 2008 models. Most people wouldn't notice the difference, even though I'm picky, I wouldn't have returned the 9c9e just for the screen alone. But I can definitely say that there simply isn't much a laptop LCD screen could do the 9c9f doesn't. Great screen!
