Get the 17.

If both were the same price, you'd get the 17...

You're investing in yourself, so spend some money!

This honestly goes to anyone and everyone who is "deciding on the 17." Understand that, you're truly deciding on spending the extra money, and you're looking for inspiration to get the 17. Most people on here will try to convince you to get the 15" to "save" money, or because they have it, or because they didn't want to spend the extra cash on the 17.

Don't settle for less... if both were the same price, it's an easy decision.

I don't have an issue with dropping the extra cash, I just wish we knew how long 'till the 17's would be available in store. I suppose I'll wait though, I've waited this long...

This is very true. Who knows... When I go to buy it in February things may change when I see those shiny new 17" MBP all around me at the Apple Store. :D

But for right now I think the 15" is the right choice for me.

If you were surrounded by people who have the 17", you'd plunge for it... or if everyone here told you to get the 17".

I'd go to the store to look at it before making the final decision.

If you go with the 17" MacBook Pro (1920 x 1200) + Apple's 24" LED Cinema Display (1920 x 1200) = Why two (1920 x 1200) resolution ?

It's like buying two 17" MacBook Pros

Hopefully as mentioned, late January, which would be this thuesday.
Meaning I will be getting mine in about 14 days after that.
Oh, I cannot wait to play with this new toy...

Hmm, I bought a classic 15" MBP just a few months ago. But, if I had to buy now I would go for the 17" with matte screen. No doubts about this.

I've figured out a method of making sure I don't do that. Since I am 89% sure that I want the 15" MBP.

My method is that I am going to spend all the extra money they would be for upgrading to the 17" before I go to the Apple store so there is no means for my picking up the 17". :)

Figure I have a day off and I will go out and check off some of the stuff that I want to buy to accessorize my 15".

This is the type of logic that makes me wonder sometimes...

actually i would like to switch to the 17" so i m intending to sell mine now

so who's interested in getting a really newish 15" mbp with top specs can send me a pm :D:D:D:D

I purchased a 15" 2.54ghz MBP 14 days ago, so today is the last day I have to return the MBP and I'm seriously considering it

My friend was over for the weekend with her previous generation 17" MBP. The difference in size and weight was negligible IMO. The new 17" is a little smaller and lighter, so I think I'm going to try to return this 15" today

I really like the laptop but I'm just too used to 1920x1200 and I still feel limited at 1440x900 If I'm going to do this, I need to figure out if I should format it before I go. I don't want to pay the restocking fee. They waived it last time and I don't want to format it for nothing if they refuse to do so this time. If they're going to make me pay a ~$250 restocking fee, it's not worth it at that point.

Ended up returning mine. Got them to waive the restocking fee. Now I get to play the waiting game.

The tiny type and images on the high res 17" are a real eye-strain.
The best option in my opinion is the 15" with the 24" external display. Best of all worlds – high res on a big screen, and a more workable res on the smaller. Plus of course, an easier computer to move around with.

Went around today and picked up some goodies.

Got a Incase 15" sleeve
Griffin Elevator stand
Apple Keyboard (Wired)
Logitech VX Nano mouse
and a Linksys WRT160N

go 15"

I;ve had a G4 17'' PB for 5 years now and I'd recommend 15'', no doubt.

You know, it's a great screen but, as someone said above, not really very portable. It weighs more, takes more space, you don't want it on your knees,
uncomfortable in a car or a train.

When you get home and hook it to a nice big screen, those 2'' mean nothing.

Everyone keeps saying the only difference is 2" in screen size, but that is not true. Although the computer specs of the 15" and the 17" are pretty much exactly the same, there is one difference: the 17" can upgrade to 8Gb of ram!! This alone is the reason I will be buying the 17".

Consider this, in 2 or 3 years, when the cost of 4 GB "sticks" of ram comes down, you can upgrade to 8GB, and the 2.66GHz processor will be sufficient for years to come. So you are looking at a computer that will last you well over 5-7 years, and still be fairly descent at that time.

Don't get me wrong, either way you have a GREAT machine for years to come, but IMO, I would go for the 17"

I write, so the 15" was a no-brainer. The keyboard n the 17" is set much further back into the machine, so if you write a lot on the computer it's not nearly as comfortable. I also had friends who said the 17" is not nearly as portable. Hope that helps. Good luck.

I was thinking about this and I have 2gb in my laptop right now and it runs just fine. In another year I can take one of those 2gb sticks out and swap in a 4gb stick. And then in probably another year after that I will be buying a new mac anyways. I usually don't keep my computers long. I've gone through 4 pcs in the last 6 years. So probably when apple comes out with a new model of the mbp I will get that.

That's one main reason why I don't own a desktop. Yea I can upgrade it but I would rather sell it and buy new.

I don't think there exist an application that can take that much of RAM yet. The maximum of RAM i can run on my machine is less then 2.5 GB RAM. I have not reached the 4GB of RAM yet.

Hell... windows itself only needs 2GB RAM.

8GB of RAM is a waste of RAM. You'll be using like 1/4 of those RAM.

I think it's unnecessary.

I think unless you are doing alot of video editing or working with a multiple of programs it is a waste for the average user. I think 4GB is the sweet spot right now. Not to little where you need more and not to much where you are paying for something you don't need yet.

I'm getting the 17 myself, and along with the 8GB and 2.66 (which I'm upgrading to 2.93 anyways)... the main thing here is the screen resolution. Regardless of where you're using it, screen resolution gives you much more space to work with...the price difference isn't that bad.

I agree. It's never enough. More = Better

It all depends on how you use the computer...

The reason i chosen the 15" is because it makes easy for me to sell it after 6 months of use. The price of a used 15" laptop doesn't drop as much as the 17"

Maybe in 6-months there would be 15" MacBook Pro at 8GB RAM

Anyone who decides to buy the 15" now without waiting a week to see what the 17" actually looks like in store is pretty silly. For only $300 more a 17" is a no brainer for me, with so many benefits its worth well well well over $300 more, but as i said we'll have to wait and see until they actually are in store to look at. The 17" unibody may turn out to be really impractical.

I have the 610N and it works great.

Question:
I just purchased a 15" MacbookPro
I was thinking of trading it in for the 17"
I would have to take a 200 dollar loss.

Is it worth it for watching streaming videos.
I also have an iMac and was thinking I could replace it with a 24" LED, but I would lose the use of another computer.

What do you think?

Thanks

Frank
