Funny that you say I shouldn't work in the ER. I want to be an ER physician. But the decision is not really about being slow. I can go get a MBP tomorrow. I really want that and think it will be best for me. I don't want to buy a computer now and have to buy one again in a few year. I don't even download anything. So i think the MBP will last a while. So I am going to go with the MBP but, now come the prob of the update. WILL SOME ONE TELL ME WHAT EXACTLY THE PENRYN PROCESSOR IS AND HOW IT WILL BENEFIT US? I have looked it up but all i get is this engineering stuff on how its built.

get the white MacBook 2.2, is gonna be awesome for your needs, since you only use internet and MS Office

MB is even way too good for those kind of tasks

MB is your choice mate, there is no reason for you to spend some extra $500++ for MBP, but then you only use it for browsing and MS Officing

once again, someone who knows nothing about what this actual update may or may not involve (at their own admission) yet is still going crazy about it. If you really have to ask/demand, in ALL CAPS, an explanation of why you should wait for something you don't understand, I'd suggest you're waiting for no other reason than you've swallowed whatever hype is out there (in here?) and it would make no difference to you whatever you did.

also, you could of course search and read the forums for answers, but that might be too easy, right?

Far too easy. This is the definition of greed: someone who knows nothing about the thing they so desperately crave, yet wants it anyway because other people on an online forum seem to want it.

Oh, and throw in something about laziness too, for the "EXPLAIN to me why I want this thing I don't understand but want since other people want it" factor.

This thread is really starting to remind me of the pre-law MBA thread in the advice forum...

I just asked you guys to explain to me what the Penryn is so that I can have a better understanding of it. I don't know what it is so why would I want it. I would want a multitouch trackpad but, I have no idea what the penryn is. so for the love of God can you explain it to me.

There was actually another thread like this yesterday. A woman who apparently did a little bit of photo editing, loudly letting us all know she'd have to move to the mac pro because the mbp's weren't being updated quickly enough and she couldn't buy a current slow one, or one that ran hot or something or other that meant the current ones were useless. She clearly had no idea what the updates meant, despite getting advice from her college educated children, which was obvious the way she quite cutely kept pasting 'the 45nm penryn 2.6ghz update'. no amount of logic will work with these people. they just want to be told what they have already decided they want to hear.

Wow can you tell me what this penryn is instead of bashing me dude

hellzprince1, here's a useful lesson i can give you... and you'll be able to use this for MEDSCHOOL, trust me, been there, done that... most of the times you'll have to find the answers, and not wait for others to explain it to you... that's how you'll survive medschool.. the correct approach if you really want to know about penryn.. is too google it! :) then compare the threads that you'll be reading..
right now, the practice of Medicine is EViDENCE based.. before i prescribe anything, i make sure there's a lot of papers/publications supporting my prescription.. preferrably RCTs.
my advice go with the macbook.. and use the extra money to buy other stuffs that you'll need like a stethoscope, diagnostic set with ophthalmoscope and otoscope.., a PDA

My 3 year old powerbook runs office with no problems.

for your needs, even the macbook might be considered overkill haha.

Macbook Air why not

I personally would go with the lightest thing I could get my hands on if I was you , carryng around 5 pounds of extra weight for yeras sucks, i have done it . Get an external HD and a super drive and carry the Air around for 5 yrs and it will be just fine. The air is the best computer for a student in my opinion, you can hook up every device you want , do not let people tell you that you are limited, you can get adapters to to have 5 ubs ports, get the air!!

would the 2.2 ghz mac book not be good enough for Microsoft office. I mean it would bethe same as a 2.2 MBP. right?

Dude, you don't need a fast machine for Office. You can run the current Office on a 5 year old Mac and it will run just fine. Office requires very low system resources.

Penryn is not going to benefit you at all just as the current version wouldn't benefit you any more than the last revision of the MBP. Your needs are very minimal and a power user truly needs a MBP to do tasks such as video editing, encoding, music production and photoshop editing and gaming.
Someone mentioned earlier to just get a refurb MBP and be done with it, you will save a good deal of money and have the size of screen you desire and will have plenty of processing power.
However, don't take this the wrong way but I'm starting to get suspect about you being just another person "waiting" (I'm starting to hate that word due to this forum) for the MBP Penryn update and created this thread to disguise yourself or are you really just looking for a notebook for school?
By now you should have bought the machine.

seriosuly if you spend an extra 900 dollars for the bigger screen i think its a mistake. if a macbook pro came in 13.3 id get that one, even if it was more expensive. smaller screen means smaller laptop, and more portable. 13.3 is plenty big imo, 11 or 12 would be optimal. have you seen both in a store? just go in and if the 15 is really a sticking a point get that. however, dont even consider the processor speed, ram, or video card, those are all completely moot if youre not playing games/video editting. 4 gigs of ram is 75$ on newegg.com. not worth 900$ upgrade imo

Folks, look's like he's decided on a MBP.

Again, I totally would've went for the MB in his position, but it's his money.

MacBook should be fine for your needs for at least a year or two, if not more. If you don't do much editing or gaming, the MacBook is more than fast enough.
What do you mean by MacBooks are not good for editing? Other than Motion, MacBooks are still good at video production tasks. I don't know where you got that idea.
- Much better keyboard

Not much of a reason because it's arguable. The one and only thing the MacBook Pro's keyboard is better at is that it's backlit.

OP, just get the MacBook. It would be good enough for you.

Dude, I know you're just going to ask this question again three months from now, so...

EXACTLY, How many times are you going to ask the same question? Try the SEARCH button, or better yet, just read your own threads.

IMHO, there is no comparison between the two keyboards -- especially for a touch typist.

I would rate the keyboards like this from best to worst:
- MBP
- MBA
- MB

I would rate the displays the same way, especially since you can have a matte screen option with the MBP.

As for backlighting, both the MBP and MBA have it.

The keyboard is one of the best things about the Macbook; it's a pleasure to type on, and I look forward to more laptops adopting the design in the future.

after having my macbook pro for about 3 weeks now, i think the keyboard is ****. im probably at the far end of the spectrum, not to brag but i type around 80-110 wpm, and i have found the keys have too much resistance and arent 'clicky' enough. they dont really spring your fingers back like a normal keyboard. i used to have a think pad t61, the keyboard was much better. i think microsoft makes the best keyboards, but even the stock ones that come from dell are pretty good too. much better than the mac ones. i feel like im typing underwater on it. i think its also a bad design that command q is right next to command tab.
