all I want is less weight!

bring it close to 2kg (4.4 pounds) for the 15" and I'd be happy

And a ten pound 17"er with a desktop CPU, two optical drives, and RAID.
I'd have to disagree, some PC manufacturers have really stepped up their game from the old days. The Pavilion, XPS, and m15x/m17x lines all look great, in my opinion.

The MBP/PB has had the same design for over 4 years now. I think it's time for a change. Maybe not a radical change, but definitely some form of change. Cars get their looks updated more often.

Agreed. The Pavilions look better than the MBPs IMHO.

Ahh, reminds me of my 17" HP notebook I had for... oh about 4 hours before promptly returning it to Costco and buying a MBP.

No less than 10 bright-blue LEDs all around the keyboard for no reason. Thermal design that included fans spinning up and down every 5 minutes, constantly. Plastic shell that warped like a wormhole.

Man that thing sucked. Please Apple, don't take any cues from PC manufacturers, ever.

I agree with this, apple can make minor updates and take design cues from the macbook and air, but DO NOT start throwing in pointless leds all over the keyboard that are flashing and distracting. also do not add a useless fingerprint reader or retinal scanner or any other pc crap. there is a reason i buy a mbp and not a pc.

I used to think that Apple did not change the MBP case over the years.

Now with a MBP15 beside my PB15, I see many incremental type changes that didn't register until they were side by side.

So from my new perspective, I am happy if Apple continues to use the same case material, keyboard, and overall design. Of course thinner and lighter would be nice, but not at the expense of power.

have you ever tried the fingerprint reader? you'd be amazed at how well it works.

To the OP: I'm waiting for a redesign as I don't like the current mushy keyboard. The magnetic latch would be good too, as would a bigger trackpad, and a bit of a design change would be interesting too. And having the option of an MBP that's smaller than the current 15 inch to replace my 12 inch PB as I do not want to lug around the 15 inch version, and I sure as hell don't want the MBA unless it came down in price by at least 20%.

Just because you think the MBP design is perfect, doesn't mean to say everyone else does, or am I stating the bleedin' obvious?

i prefer having an external drive, something you can carry..
use it on your macPRO or on your MBP

I prefer that, I can drop footage straight into my scratch disk from my Xdcam EX's SxS card when I am shooting on Location with no AC support for an external HD.

I said that i thought it was perfect and was asking people what they thought should be changed. so yes i agree with you, not everyone thinks it is perfect, what would make it that way?

i remember reading an article at the time the macbooks got their overhaul from the ibook to macbook transition in which an apple employee when questioned about redesigning the macbook pros said, that the reason they weren't redesign [at that time] was because they didn't know how to make them better. Just food for thought.

I have a 17" MacBook Pro right now and I love its design but it falls short on a few things which I would like Apple to address.

All my examples of a case re-design I am aiming at the 17" model so keep that in mind.

Things that are really important to me in a redesign:

1. eSATA port
2. 54 Express card slot
3. Get rid of the plastic grey rim around the edges of the notebook, I've never seen one manufactured perfectly and it often protrudes on one side or the other by a few mm making the notebook look cheap and tacky.
4. Larger Trackpad
5. Bluray Optical Drive where discs enter from the SIDE not the bottom.
6. No more latches, use the Magnetic latching mechanism from the MacBook and MacBook Air

Now I'll just go over some of these in more detail.

eSATA: It needs this, its a great feature of the best external drives and really if the MacBook Pro wants to set itself apart from the norm (and better differentiate itself from the MacBook) then adding one of these would certainly do it.

54 Express Card Slot: There are TV Tuners and remote controls and other devices that can use this slot. The 34 simply cuts out to many great devices for the Mac and the ones that have been made to fit extend so far out of the notebook your afraid it will snap off.

Grey Plastic Trim: As I said above, they don't know how to fit it correctly or manufacturer it within tolerance so get rid of it altogether.

Large Trackpad: If we have gesture support give us a nice sizeable trackpad to use it!

Bluray Optical Drive that loads from the side: I want this because when you are sitting with the notebook in your Lap (which is often the case as afterall it is the purpose of it) it is extremely difficult to put in and remove discs without having to pick the laptop up, rest it on something else, swivel it to the side or some other action that should not be required. Just turn the Optical Drive sideways so we can stick discs in from the side and it ends that issue. Also give us a Bluray drive, seriously.

Get rid of the Latches: they were fun when latches were new, Apples retract in to the bezel which is unique even today but come on, this is 2008 not 2003. Get rid of it go magnetic across all the lines, its cleaner, it looks nicer.

Overall the form of the MacBook Pros is great, it just needs some technical improvements.

And here I thought it was product placement. Boy do I feel stupid!
Where I come from Apple couldn't care less about product placement in b-grade local soaps and series. I understand the concept, but what you don't understand, is THEY DON'T NEED TO PAY FOR IT. Their products are such that they will be used regardless of Apple paying because they are iconic.

Interesting thread.....I think the macbook pro really is a nice machine and that you will continue to see incremental upgrades of the platform....but I think the ipod touch is a preview in to where mobile computing is headed. Apple will still support antiquated systems like the macbook and macbook pro because consumers will have to be weened off a little bit at a time. It is the new products that are in the skunkworks now that will truly be the macbook pro replacement. The possibilities of design are numerous but I am sure they will be insanely great! One thing is for sure....they will be networked out of the box...internet everywhere and of course you will have to have a service plan at purchase....keyboards will be virtual with tactile feedback and on board storage will be obselete. Your machine will be in constant contact with your iserver in your home. It's the future.....having said that the macbook pro is the best of the past.

I used an air in between my 15" SR and my new 15" penryn. Some things about the form factor of the air that I loved was the magnetic latch and the keyboard. I would like to see those features combined with less weight and a thinner profile if possible.

WinMacLin hit this one on head, I think. The only thing I would add (and I know this is controversial) is the MBA keyboard. I love my 17" MBP almost so much that it is inappropriate, but I HATE its mushy, lumpy keyboard. When I am at home, I use the external keyboard with the MB style keys. Im also going to go ahead and repeat the part about mechanical latches. Really ugly, I am shocked that particular element has survived on the MBP this long.

Sleek in the same way an elephant is sleek? :)

I dunno, they look pretty sleek to me ;)
