My guess is that Apple is aware of the issue and addressed it with the new screens released this year even if they're not saying anything. I could be wrong, but it seems the Samsung screens are superior in more ways than one.

I bought a keyboard cover for my 2011 mbp and have used it since day one, maybe this is why my screen looks like the day i bought it

i also use these , no water no fluid,

This is a thread about the retina MacBook Pros, first released in 2012. Your 2011 MacBook Pro has a sheet of uncoated glass sitting on top of the LCD display, so you would never have experienced the problem documented in this thread on your laptop, no matter how good or how poor your display cleaning habits are.

The MacBook models with "retina"/HiDPI IPS displays have no extra/separate cover glass, and the top layer of glass that is actually part of the LCD assembly has an anti-glare coating applied to it. It is this coating that is flaking/rubbing off.

I've had both LG and Samsung LCDs in my rMBP and the issue only occurred with the Samsung LCD.

The irony in this thread is hilarious.

2012/2013: Everyone DEMAND a Samsung screen because they don't have ghosting and are better color uniformity with less yellowing.

2014/2015: People with Samsung screens have this issue.

I have a Late 2013 13" with a LG display and it's has no issues. I've cleaned my display at least once a week since I've had it.

Haha very true but I was always of the opinion that the LG looked better but it was replaced with a Samsung due to ghosting. The Samsung got replaced with an LG because of this scratched coating. No ghosting on this LG so life is good! I'm still paranoid though and try to wipe gently without water.

I thought it was only possible to determine screen mfg on the 15"?

It is. I worked for retail at one point and with an internal system you can see individual part manufacturers on Macs for CTOs and repairs. For training purposes I looked up my own Mac and found that my display is LG.

How do you find out what you have?

alright I have a mbpr late 2013, so what exactly should I be cleaning the screen with? It says to use water with the microfiber cloth but apparently that can also scratch the coating off?:(

I'm sorry to say that this has happened to my 15" Mid-2012 rMPB as well.
Just noticed it a couple of months ago.

I had the ghosting issues in 2013 and had the screen replaced. It's now a Samsung panel.

I still got a few months left on my AppleCare, so I'm gonna try to get it serviced. But I've heard from others here in Brazil that Apple is not replacing these screens.

For what it's worth, I don't think this has anything to do with how you clean the screen. It looks like there's a problem with the adhesive that secures the outermost glass panel to the rest of the screen...

He guys I have to be honest. I have the same issue but I did clear with stuff that is ment for glases. However the coating came of to easily in my opinion but had I used water it might not have happened. So I did not complain with Apple. My own mistake yes I am stupid grrrrrrrrr! :)

Has Apple been known to replace these Macbook Pro's still under warranty? Lightly cleaning the screen with a brand new camera lens quality microfiber cloth was enough to have my 2012 Macbook Pro's AG start to come off. I also have a general problem with the thing burning your fingers if you try and game on it and type. I'm hoping Apple will back their stuff still under warranty, but I'm not holding my breath.

So I finally took my early 2013 Retina MBP 15" into the Apple Store for service. Pointed out the coating issue amongst other things. They replaced the display without question.

Was yours still under warranty or Apple Care?

I just returned from an Apple Premium Service Provider. I am in Brazil.
I have a mid-2012 rMBP still under AppleCare (only 2 months left) with the AR issue.
My case is not nearly as bad as some of the pictures I've seen - mostly around the black bezel - but it still bothers me.

Anyway, service was denied right away. The technician didn't even bother keeping my machine and checking with Apple.
I was told that Apple won't fix the problem as it's cosmetic and not covered under warranty.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I could proceed? Is there a way to get in touch with someone higher up at Apple?

Just a quick follow up: I wrote tcook@apple.com and got a call the next day from a very kind lady from Corporate Executive Relations who asked me for more info and pictures.
Long story short: Apple replaced my screen for free and also my logic board (mid 2012 rMBP fell under their Repair Extension Program for Video Issues). Basically I got a new computer and still got about a month of Apple Care left.
I'm pretty happy! :)

Hello all

I have a 2014 MBP R - 15" / i7 / 512GB SSD and Nvidia Graphics and recently decided to clean a couple of spots with a lint free cloth and water - this is when this "streak" issue occurred at the top right hand corner and directly to the left and below the corner in the black bezel area. I have been fairly lucky with Apple hardware and never had to ring them before. I chatted to Apple online via their support site, then had a specialist call me. I am still within warranty by about 2 months, and as a gesture of good will will replace the whole display at no cost to me. When covered they will provide a CS code to cover parts and labour.

This is staingate right?

No Staingate would pertain to discolouration / yellowing of the lcd display - also referred to as incorrect colour temp. That's a completely separate issue. This issue refers to the AR / anti reflective coating coming off screens even with a lint free cloth and water - no chemicals, no solvents, etc. It's actually not a stain but a defect of how the AR coating is applied. In sunlight you can see the big difference between the shiny black - normal and the worn AR coating which does not reflect as much light and basically makes it a mirror.

The same nonsense happened to me. I went to three Apple stores, and they each refused to replace my screen! Ugh. I called Applecare, complained a bunch, and they gave me a replacement screen assembly. So… Don't give up! Keep fighting! Every person who complains sends a message to Apple: "There's a real problem here!"

I have my MBP 2012 retina, and the coating at the bottom is coming off. I took to Apple store in The Alderwood mall and they refused to replace my screen. I am so mad, told them that I spent over $2000 for this MBP and this defect should be fixed by apple and apple should stand behind their products. This is a known problem and apple should help customers instead of refuse it. The cheaper brand name of laptops do not have this problem, so this is an apple's problem. I told them i trust the reputation of apple that was why i bought the MBP with 3 times price compare to other laptops. I feel that I am being mistreated and betrayed as a loyal customer.

I will try again different store, but afraid that I will get the same result. My MBP is out of warrantee, they kept telling me that if my MBP still in the warranty period then they will do it, but it's out of warranty. Don't know if call applecare it would help?
