I have my MBP 2012 retina, and the coating at the bottom is coming off. I took to Apple store in The Alderwood mall and they refused to replace my screen. I am so mad, told them that I spent over $2000 for this MBP and this defect should be fixed by apple and apple should stand behind their products. This is a known problem and apple should help customers instead of refuse it. The cheaper brand name of laptops do not have this problem, so this is an apple's problem. I told them i trust the reputation of apple that was why i bought the MBP with 3 times price compare to other laptops. I feel that I am being mistreated and betrayed as a loyal customer.

I will try again different store, but afraid that I will get the same result. My MBP is out of warrantee, they kept telling me that if my MBP still in the warranty period then they will do it, but it's out of warranty. Don't know if call applecare it would help?

Email Tim Cook - tcook@apple.com with some pics of it. Be friendly.

Same problem here

TLDR: MBPr screen coating is vulnerable to damage through normal use. Wipe regularly. Use protector. Or don't buy.

I have a similar problem with my 2012 retina macbook pro 15'', which is rapidly getting worse. The coating is coming off in the middle of the screen. Initially it looked like a stubborn greasy print from the spacebar. I have been wiping keyboard prints off the screen with a microfiber cloth from time to time, occasionally with the help of Hama lcd/tft/plasma cleaning liquid. I know that Apple recommends only water, but this is disingenuous, as there is no way you can get fingerprint oil from the screen with water alone, and the first thing they did at the Genius bar was wiping the screen with the similar stuff. The solution I have is free from alcohols and I've been using it for years, including on my previous macbook-pro which had an antiglare screen (i.e. no glass).

Anyway, it turned out that the worst affected area corresponds to the region between the space bar and the trackpad. But there are other spots, which are definitely from keyboard key edges. There are also several tiny holes, which I believe are described as "exploding pixels" on a couple of Apple support forum threads. It is possible that the disappearing coating started from these spots, which in turn could have been initiated by dirt particles.

I took the macbook to Apple store. I expected it to be repaired under warranty. However the guy at the genius bar told me that the problem was caused by my negligent use, and is not a manufacturing issue. I agree that it is not a manufacturing issue, but I don't think there was anything negligent about the way I use the machine. As possible reasons the genius suggested excessive pressure or rough particles trapped between the screen and the body. I am carrying my macbook pretty much every day in a soft neoprene case in my backpack, so it is exposed to some amount of pressure, but there is nothing abnormal about it, certainly less than what an aluminium body laptop should be able to withstand. As to the dirt particles, I am sure there were some as I use my MBPr pretty much non-stop in different office and home environments. But if there was a dirt particle are not big enough to be obvious I would get rid of it, and there wouldn't be anything harder than a bread crumb. There was absolutely no sand even close to the machine, ever.

I left the apple store disappointed and confused. After thinking about it for a while and reading several forum threads, I am convinced that the problem is either with the quality of the coating or the design of the MBPr. I will pay another visit to the apple store and try to explain this, but I am not sure it will help. I am afraid that I'll have to either replace the screen at my own cost (~700) or get buy a new MBPr. I'll still go for the Retina (once you get used to it there is no way back).

In any case I am a bit upset with Apple. If extra care is required for the screen to survive daily use (protector, a hard carry case, regular dusting), they should make it very clear. If this is a known problem - and I had an impression from my conversation with the Apple genius that it was - this should be covered by warranty.

Although in the future I will be much more careful, I am sure that I did nothing wrong. It's nice to see that I am not alone, and I hope that there will be enough of us for Apple to admit the problem and/or do something about it.

I have exactly the same problem. I feel that apple should stand behind this manufacturing problem and fix it for us free instead of asking $700. it sucks. The coating on the screen should be inside or they just put it wrong side? But this is on and on problem going. Apple aware of this and ignores it. This Mac is $3000 it is not $300. Feel disappointed and never spend that big of money on apple again. If you have anyway to convince apple to fix it, please help me? Thanks. Frustrated, disappointed, and sad .

With this, apple does not stand behind their product because of manufacturing defect. I will not ever buy it again and suggest people think about it hard before to spend $2K-$3K on it.

Is your machine under Apple Care?

Is your machine under Apple Care?
Unfortunately, it is out of apple care. I told the guy that if this is under apple care then there would not be a problem. Even mine is out of apple care but i feel that this is manufacturing defect, not one, 2, 3 but thousands of it and if you go online read on the coating coming off the retina you will find it and there is a law suit in Thailand going on. I put my trust on apple and put my hard working money on apple's products and I feel that apple should honor the fix not only for me, but for everyone that have this problem. Why would apple did not put the coating inside the screen instead of outside or their Engineers too much on beer, ?

Very disappointed, frustrated, and would never spend big bucks on MBP again, the other brand name they have the hardware problem but not the coating, this is apple's problem and apple should take an action and responsible for their bad design and fix this. Still feel cheated

Thanks so much, I am so exhausted. This problem shouldn't be customer's problem. I will write but not too sure will get the result. This is manufacturing defect, and apple should step in and cover it, even the product is over the warranty.

I have the same problem and just sent my email to Tim.

Even though you are frustrated remember to be polite in your email.

Hopefully everything goes well for both of us.

I sent my email just to Tim yesterday and today got a phone call from Apple in Ireland – be sure to include your phone number in your email. The guy asked me to send my MBP serial number to him by email. He told me that he is sending my case to be looked at by Apple Engineers. They will inform me about their actions on Monday (or that is at least the way I understood what he said.) Apparently they don't work on weekends.

What's your situation?

I sent email to T Cook and all others that appeared on the fb suggested yesterday. (9/24). I copied the " about this Mac" info and attached into the email and included my email, my cell phone.

Still waiting. But I feel that Apple should help everyone that having this problem instead of having to go thru all these emails like this to get fix and some get it fix, some don't. It is manufacturing defect and they knew it well too.

Is this happening on all new MBP's with Retina display or a certain known batch?

I just ordered a refurbished (May 2015) 15" MBP TODAY... should I be concerned, and/or what steps do you take to prevent it?

It appeared that the MBP with Retina having this problem. Not all of them (100%) experienced with this, but many of them are having this type of coating screen comes off. The coating is for Retina (I believe) and it's purpose is to minimize the glare of the screen. The only thing to avoid is to buy extend warranty. Even though, I do not like my laptop put in repair, even with $0 cost because just like a brand new car got in accident and have to go to the body shop. The car will be fixed, and the damage is still in your mind that it has been it the accident. Same feeling with the re-furbished one, that is why the refurbished is cheaper and I would not spend money on the refurbished, but that's my personal reference. I hope Apple would recognize the problem of their products, and make this public notice to fix all the retina MBP that have this problem, instead of silence about this and put all the burden on our shoulders (customers). I tried to argued with the tech at Apple store but lost with the reason: " your MBP is out of warranty". I felt that I am betrayed and cheated by Apple. This is known issue, and they are not going to do anything about this.

that never really works for anyone., but some get replies..
I don't think it work either. Some lucky one will get replies - Apple just gives you 1yr. After that sorry dude., they'd offer you extended warranty, but it costs you big bucks. (Around $349 3 yrs). But I would not spend $3,000 and have to bring it back for any repair, to me your machine would not be the same just like new car and have to put in the body shop. The car comes out the shop with no dent, no dings, but it got in an accident and it would never like the one never get in accident. To me I don't want my new car has repaint.

Today I got a new call from Apple that they are willing to do an exception and replace my screen for free.

My warranty has run out a couple years ago. And I don't have AppleCare.

Nice, that's great that they're going to fix it for you.

I don't know why people are having problems getting this fixed. My wife's MBP had this exact problem. I took it to the Apple store and the guy said it would be a free replacement even before he checked to see if I had applecare

Here's my story. MBPR Mid 2014. Top right corner two spots appeared on the black bezel. Got out the old lint free cloth and tap water - started to rub and it kept spreading. I took my computer to an Apple Authorised Service Provider in Cairns Queensland, Australia. They asked if it affected the functionality of the computer (thought it was an odd question), and I said no, however this mark is not acceptable. I was told they could not do any more. So I got home - visited the Apple support site and got to an online chat with Technical support with pictures. I also told them of the AASP's response which they thought was very strange. Apple said this would be resolved one way or another. They saw the pics and got an Apple Tier 2 Specialist to give me a call within 5 minutes. Apple then agreed to replaced the whole screen at no cost to me - I'm still within the 12 months warranty.

You are one of the lucky ones. Apple should make this a free replacement for everyone have this kind of screen problem. They knew it well, and should send out a letter to make it a easy for customers. I took my MBP to the local Apple store, waited for 3 hours, talked, and explained to the guy at apple store for 30min and He started lecture me that why should apple replace it for free?

I told the guy that why should I paid $3000 for the MBP and a year later the screen is pilled off like this? and other brand selling for $350 do not have this screen pill off problem? and on and on...

What a waste of my time and got an earful of BS.

Is this still happening with new machines? Does anybody have a 2014 or 2015 model that this happened on?

Mine too. At first I thought it was my own mistake that the coating at the edges came of so easely but now also the middle of the screen got it. No way I used anything more than moisture to clean after the edges. So I returned to the shop and they said Apple would fix it for free. Even if out of warantee. Good thing Apple the coating of the early retina has a problem.

Ok this is unexpected. Right now I have my MacBook back but Apple did not want to pay. However I bought it at the Mediamarkt in The Netherlands and they said it should be under warranty. So they paid and it turns out they got half back from Apple through a coulance arrangement.
