Here's damage of my MBP 13'' Retina screen:

attachment.php

I took it to a Apple Certified Service and "almost" got it replaced under warranty. The thing is the issue occurs only on the black frame not over the lcd matrix. The service contacted Apple technicians to get the permission to replace the display but in the reply Apple sait that this is "estetical damage"!!

Once this starts happening over the LCD matrix I *might* get it replace.

Funny thing is the reason why it happens that Apple KNOWS about!! In the factory there was a huge batch of Retina displays that have the glass piece glued in the wrong side  I think that ScratchGate is the right name for this thing!

I lost my microfiber cloth that came with my rMBP and bought a new one ; guess what ?! The new one is yellow (not black like the original) and after wiping my screen with it (only water) it had black marks all over it.. You guess it. The coat is coming off.
This is bad. Really bad.

your rMBP came with a cloth? Mine didn't :/ Just bought mine new a month ago (13'')

mine was replaced

My screen had similar marks but just touching the actual display area, I took it to an Apply store and they replaced my screen.

I must be lucky - I've bought my 13" rMBP in November and I clean it A LOT with microfiber cloth. My friends are even starting to make fun of it.

My screen looks normal - no scratches. I hope I won't break my luck with posting this here, but still I've got 2 years more of AppleCare.

pte007 might be right about some portion of units being defective.

limited issue

My wife has a MBP and no problems, interesting..... as others have said maybe just a limited issue

Just to add to the list

I've got the same problem, just got off the phone with Apple support; I can bring it in for repair (bought it in december '13)

Good luck, I'm out of warranty so if it starts happening, I'll be SOL. I'm being extra careful with how I clean the display at this stage

In any case I am a bit upset with Apple. If extra care is required for the screen to survive daily use (protector, a hard carry case, regular dusting), they should make it very clear. If this is a known problem - and I had an impression from my conversation with the Apple genius that it was - this should be covered by warranty.

The same nonsense happened to me. I went to three Apple stores, and they each refused to replace my screen! Ugh. I called Applecare, complained a bunch, and they gave me a replacement screen assembly. So… Don't give up! Keep fighting! Every person who complains sends a message to Apple: "There's a real problem here!"

Because it's in the same area, it can't be just from cleaning. The only thing I can imaging is that overtime that area of the screen gets more wear from opening it.

On my screen I have two very small lines each about 3 inches away from the camera.

No way man. I just can't see this being just wear and tear. You all must be doing something wrong and not admitting it.

For your info I've purchased both 13" and 15" models and kept them for 14 days before returning them and I tried really really hard to reproduce what I've been seeing in these pictures. I've tried the following every day for 14 days (rubbing the screen trying to damage it):

*** Microfiber with water only

*** Microfiber with isopropyl alcohol 70% concentration

*** Microfiber with isopropyl alcohol 99% concentration

*** Microfiber with Zippo Lighter Fluid

Both (13 and 15" were 2014 rMBP models). The screen was the same after 14 days of "abuse" aka spotless. You must be doing something wrong OR the older models might be having an issue. The 2014 models are perfect.

No, we are not doing anything wrong. I have the same issue with the 15" rMBP 2012. I always used water and i always used the proper cloth. Once I noticed little spot and when I tried to clean it the coating came off and NO i did NOT rub hard.

Tell Apple that. As far as I'm concerned the 2014 seemed immune to my abuse :p coating was alive and intact after 14 days of abuse.

TLDR: MBPr screen coating is vulnerable to damage through normal use. Wipe regularly. Use protector. Or don't buy.

I have a similar problem with my 2012 retina macbook pro 15'', which is rapidly getting worse. The coating is coming off in the middle of the screen. Initially it looked like a stubborn greasy print from the spacebar. I have been wiping keyboard prints off the screen with a microfiber cloth from time to time, occasionally with the help of Hama lcd/tft/plasma cleaning liquid. I know that Apple recommends only water, but this is disingenuous, as there is no way you can get fingerprint oil from the screen with water alone, and the first thing they did at the Genius bar was wiping the screen with the similar stuff. The solution I have is free from alcohols and I've been using it for years, including on my previous macbook-pro which had an antiglare screen (i.e. no glass).

Anyway, it turned out that the worst affected area corresponds to the region between the space bar and the trackpad. But there are other spots, which are definitely from keyboard key edges. There are also several tiny holes, which I believe are described as "exploding pixels" on a couple of Apple support forum threads. It is possible that the disappearing coating started from these spots, which in turn could have been initiated by dirt particles.

I took the macbook to Apple store. I expected it to be repaired under warranty. However the guy at the genius bar told me that the problem was caused by my negligent use, and is not a manufacturing issue. I agree that it is not a manufacturing issue, but I don't think there was anything negligent about the way I use the machine. As possible reasons the genius suggested excessive pressure or rough particles trapped between the screen and the body. I am carrying my macbook pretty much every day in a soft neoprene case in my backpack, so it is exposed to some amount of pressure, but there is nothing abnormal about it, certainly less than what an aluminium body laptop should be able to withstand. As to the dirt particles, I am sure there were some as I use my MBPr pretty much non-stop in different office and home environments. But if there was a dirt particle are not big enough to be obvious I would get rid of it, and there wouldn't be anything harder than a bread crumb. There was absolutely no sand even close to the machine, ever.

I left the apple store disappointed and confused. After thinking about it for a while and reading several forum threads, I am convinced that the problem is either with the quality of the coating or the design of the MBPr. I will pay another visit to the apple store and try to explain this, but I am not sure it will help. I am afraid that I'll have to either replace the screen at my own cost (~700) or get buy a new MBPr. I'll still go for the Retina (once you get used to it there is no way back).

Although in the future I will be much more careful, I am sure that I did nothing wrong. It's nice to see that I am not alone, and I hope that there will be enough of us for Apple to admit the problem and/or do something about it.

Wow that is horrible!

If it gets very bad, can you just take off the glass cover and use it without the glass?

i have a 2014 model and no issues so far

this is going to be a huge problem for apple for 2012-2013 models. a lot of money to replace an entire screen

Goodness this is horrible to read. Just bought my 13" rMBP last weekend and now I'm having second thoughts. Hopefully it really is limited to the 2012-2013 models and doesn't affect the 14s. Eeesh.

It's replacing a 13" Air from 2012 and I remember seeing a few marks from the keyboard prior to me selling it. Clearly they just need to find a new way to coat the screen because what they are doing...isn't working.

I'm hoping Apple fixed this by the time the Late 2013s rolled out... But it may be too early to tell. I dunno. Anyone out there have this problem on a Late 2013?

I put a screen protector over mine. It introduces some reflections in different light situations but not too bad overall.

Mid 2012 rMBP. Issue just showed up for me today. I could clearly see the coating coming off the top part of the screen as I was wiping it. I thought it was a smudge and wiped it again making it even worse.

Maybe it's due to oil buildup from continual handling throughout the months and years. To the user within the 14 day return window, you obviously won't wear it out that soon. I would say it would take at least a few months.

What I want to know is if apple will replace it for free when out of warranty?

That's what I'm starting to think. It always seems to be at the top of the display, above the actual LCD itself, near the camera. Somebody in another thread admitted that it is either very close to or the same area that he finds himself touching when he is pushing the display open with his finger.

I have a 2012 15" rMBP that I ordered on release day. To this day, the surface of the display looks flawless, and I am pretty darn anal about cleaning it (microfiber + 50/50 water/alcohol mix). When I read that other thread, though, it occurred to me that I try my DARNEDEST to never touch the surface of the display if I can help it, even in the camera area. When I push the display open, my finger is touching the aluminum edge + the rubber gasket around the edge of the glass, NEVER any part of the actual glass itself.

EDIT: Other thread I was referring to is here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1794687/. Dude even has a mid-2014 model that this is happening on after only 2 months of ownership.

I think it just comes from cleaning. One of my colleagues has it wearing off on the bottom of his 2013 15" model. Probably wise to avoid contact with the display. I'm out of the country until December so I won't know if Apple will replace it until then.

Same problem here, the first message from the repair is that it costs 900 $ and Apple does not cover although there is still warranty.

On my wifes 2012 15" retina the same problem appears. I will take it to Apple store and will see what they say.

Will keep you posted.
