They should separate them.

I can't plug in my mobile broadband card and something else at the same time without having to use the extension cable. Then it's just weird.

Amen.

I figured, when I first got my MBP (my previous laptop having had four ports, with a minimum of three being in constant use) that 'only two USB ports' would be an issue. Thus far, I've had no trouble adjusting to only having two ports (and, no, I haven't even felt the need to invest in a hub yet!)... but I do frequently find it impossible to use both ports at the same time due to their being so close together.

well that kind of sucks.luckily i dont need an air card or anything like that

I only need two, though :). The rest are covered by the USB on the back of the LED Cinema Display :D.

If you look at the layout of the internals, you will quickly realize why there is no way to separate them. With the large internal battery which takes up the entire bottom, and the optical drive that takes up the right side, there isn't space to spare.

Two is fine, but what I would have really liked is for them to be slightly further apart, just a couple of mm, as at the moment I struggle to plus, say two thin memory sticks in as they both push against each other

there is no reason they couldnt put more ports on the other side or on the back. every othe computer company manages to do it just fine.

Because it makes the computer ugly? That's the worst thing about other computer manufacturers, you might be able to find 1 or 2 computers in their whole range which is even worth looking at the specs for, because the rest are so cluttered with ports which make it look like a big plastic swiss cheese.

Apple will always put design pretty far up on the list.

There is a PERFECT reason for that, to maintain the desired design and form factor, they couldn't accommodate any more USB ports. Look at a teardown of a MacBook pro before saying things like that. I mean come on, the back is where the hinge and vents are.... where on earth would a USB port go o the back....

im just saying there are some situations where functionality should come first.

And if the MBP doesn't fit the users functionality requirements they can either not buy the laptop, or get a USB hub. Honestly, as someone who owns many USB devices I have never once felt limited by USB. Each to his own, but this is why god invented USB hubs.

does apple make a hub? because i would want everything to match

So, you'll be going out of your way to buy a usb hub to excuse the design flaw. Smart, smart.

2 USB ports (or 3 on my 17" uMBP) is NOT a flaw... and they are NOT too close together. I can fit a USB key and a USB mouse receiver next to each other just fine.

None on the back - The screen hinge goes there. Right side is take by optical drive and the battery. Left side, current ports and hard drive.

WTF? So if I buy a hub because 6 USB ports isnt enough, its also a design flaw? The thing is, if you're mobile, how often do you really need more than the 2? If you're docked, use a hub. Makes perfect sense to me.

Thank you, a voice of reason. Its a mobile computer for god sakes.

Well go become an Apple product engineer and tell them they are doing it wrong and you figure out how to add more USB ports.

Concede much?

Anyway I have my own interests in life and becoming an Apple product engineer isn't one of them, bit of a drastic suggestion no? Instead I used the feedback form and simply told them.

If Netbooks have 3 USB ports AND a multicard reader I don't think its much to ask. Just saying.

So wait a minute, if a Volvo got a cup holder, it's a design flaw if a Ferrari doesn't? Or is it more logical that they are designed for other things. Apple clearly designs laptops for people who do not need their "USB fan" and whatnot plugged in while they are on the train.

Lol, really wondered how people would counter this point. Design flaw, I didn't say it was a flaw, I'm simply saying a 3rd USB and a multi-card reader isn't out of the question.

Car analogies suck btw.

Looks pretty crowded in there doesn't it?

Show me where it would go. Please.

Well, Apple is obviously thinking that more ports would destroy the design or it doesn't fit. If Apple believed that more consumers valued more ports over the design they would of course have more ports, anything else would be a stupid move.

And cars is the best invention in the world, and the most important thing too! ;)
