@Davidkoh, we're drifting off topic but I think sanitation is a better invention and as I don't drive I get around quite easily on public transport, at least one can stretch his feet on a train.

Looks pretty crowded in there doesn't it?

Show me where it would go. Please.

Simple, don't have the battery hugging the side of the laptop, move the battery back to the middle like they use to be in the older MacBook Pro's.

If you want to go crazy, don't include the optical drive, use that space for something else. Without an optical drive you could increase the battery size, add more ports and fit in a expresscard slot. Make the optical an extra purchase. Netbooks don't have optical drives.

It isn't rocket science.

I hate public transport, slow and a lot of annoying people everywhere ;).

I agree they should remove the optical drive and make the battery bigger to go in there too. But I guess that today most people would rather see the optical drive still there then having longer battery life + extra ports. With time that will probably change.

So you would rather have 1 more USB port and no optical drive...

I love when people way oversimplify an extremely complex problem.

I live in the UK, it probably isn't as bad.

You quoted my last post but didn't read it I guess. You really can't concede the point can you? I love it when people don't read something properly, it makes them look ignorant when you call them out on it. I said extra battery, expresscard slot and more ports. Here is the kicker, I am looking forward to purchasing the 17" MBP anyway somewhere down the line.

No no, I did read your post. I just don't think it makes sense. All of this useless bickering over a single USB port. It's a mobile computer, if you need a bunch of USB ports on the go, buy Dell. I just don't get why you want Apple to redesign the internals of a laptop to accommodate something so silly as a single extra port.

Useless yes, bickering no.

I didn't want to redesign the internals of a laptop until you asked me to, at first I was just asking for another port, but of course it doesn't make sense, you're still talking about that single extra port whereas I'm not now. I'm taking this discussion and your patience up a notch.

This is a regular question that comes up and I always like how those who don't need more than 2 USB ports always think that should be enough for everyone else.

You know what the regular answer is, right?

Get a USB hub. Having that many accessories plugged in isn't great for the laptop anyway. Get a powered hub so they're not constantly draining power.

I don't see a reason Apple should shove 5-6 USB ports into the laptop when only a handful of users really want them, and I'm sure that's at least part of why they haven't.

I get the distinct feeling though that some people here wouldn't be happy, even if the entire outer rim of the laptop were USB ports.

Unless, maybe, it had a Dell logo on it. And before anyone gets their feathers all ruffled, I'm talking about the OP. ;)

I have a hub and I never want to use it. :(

don't they have USB dongles? Or splitter, for a better description? It acts like a hub without the footprint, so to speak.... I was going to say why not use the an express card that has a USB port?.. but i guess he doesn't even have a Mac..??/

Unless he has a newer Mac without an expresscard port (17" doesn;t count cause we're talking about two usb ports)

WTF? So if I buy a hub because 6 USB ports isnt enough, its also a design flaw? The thing is, if you're mobile, how often do you really need more than the 2? If you're docked, use a hub. Makes perfect sense to me.

well umm if i im on the go and i want to connect my ipod and my 2 externals then i would need a hub. on the go.

im not going to say that

You are on the go with 2 external hard drives? Ok...

yeah. i like to listen to my entire music library while im on the go. and i also like to sync my ipod on the go with the music from those hard drives. is that a problem?

Get a bigger hard drive? Put two hard drives inside of a machine (if you get a macbook pro)?

I can't imagine anyone using two rotational hard drives while charging an ipod on the go. The battery life wouldn't be much..

2 hours battery life I get doing that ;). I don't do it all the time but I did it today actually in my house. I was backing up 200GB to a daisy chained drive and I needed to move into the kitchen. Since everything was running off the 1 FW cable, it was easy to move downstairs.

I'm setting up an internal RAID 0 in my MacBook next week as well! :-/

anyone else think that they should put more usb ports in the mbp?

I'm gonna tell you something real....we don't buy Mac's for functionality; we buy Macs for pretty. My friend has a Toshiba POS with all kinds of ports. Four USB, Two headphone jacks, HDMI port, ect...ect. But guess what, it's a huge ugly bastard. If you want a bunch of s*** in your lappy, go for windoze. If you want pretty (and admit it, that's why you got turned on to macs) get an Apple lappy.

I'm going to tell you something real and also anecdotal because you don't speak for me when you say 'we'.

I bought my Mac for OSX, the hardware was just there already. Back then my first Mac was comparable in features except for processor. Now I expect more from the hardware after using Macs for 6 years.

Its interesting that all the defenders for Apple go off on huge extremes when giving examples when most of us are just asking for a modest bump in ports.

At home, I have a Lacie HD with two 1TB drives in it connected via firewire.
I also have a 1TB drive connected via USB.
An iPod/iPhone/mouse/keyboard/???? can still connect to the other USB. If I still need another USB, I'll take my Apple aluminum keyboard and plug that in and then I have two USB ports on it.

It's good to have gadgets to do stuff with. :)

you're not the sharpest knife, are you

I'm from up north, we're never sharp, just blunt. When you're trying to retort like that you have to at least try to be clever.

I was asked what would I do, it does not mean what you think it does when you place those 2 quotes together. Notice I said "If you want to go crazy." It wasn't an absolute.
