look in my sig! its a Core Duo same as yours :p. i dont mind about not getting 64-bit apps. my Hackintosh that is still not feasible for me to order yet will be 64-bit and using more RAM than a 32-bit system can handle so hopefully that will be snappy.

uni off today as well, but got assignments due . retail $39 is pretty good the US price with tax turns about to be AUD$38. if youve bought a Mac since June 8 you get it for $15 i think.

im too lazy to read sigs lol!

i have my iMac which will benefit from 64-bit and GCD, but its not OpenCL compatible :(

my hackintosh will benefit from GCD + 64-bit, and when i get a OpenCL card it will fly!! i cant wait!! :D i have been thinking a 9800 or GTX265 or GTX280, what do you think??

if i run the optical bay and not with any SSD, which harddrive should go in where?

i have a 500gb scorpio blue and the stock 250gb. my plan is to run OSX on the 250 with apps and the 500gb as storage. would it be safe to leave the 500gb in the optibay?

my original intentions were to upgrade my 250gb to the 500gb scorpio due to increased space and how much faster it is over the 250gb. after i read about this option to run both harddrive, i much rather have 2 hdd than carrying an external. but now it seems redundant to run OSX on the 250gb since i bought the 500gb for better speed. what do you guys think?

thanks!

Time Machine on second disk?

So, I am trying to track down a Gen2 Intel 160gb SSD to do this Mod. I havent tried the Time Machine yet though.
My question is: On the 2nd drive, my current 500gb stock drive from apple, can I just create a 160gb partition for time machine to backup my Intel, or does it have to be external? I think it is all automatic too, right? The backup, that is. Also, does it backup the whole drive? Including OSX files?

putting a drive in the optical bay will not have SMS support...so buy a drive with sms for the optical bay.

any drive in the stock location will have SMS...do not use a drive with sms as this will cause issues.

yes.

your 160gb intel can be backed up on the 500gb just fine as a time machine drive or just partition it.

carbon copy cloner (free app) can clone the partition...providing a backup and a completely bootable second os, incase something happens and you need your data right away.

if you want this automate then that can be set up with carbon copy cloner very easily.

good luck

Thanks for the info. Just to make sure I understand though. The Carbon copy will backup the entire drive for a complete backup, but Time Machine just backs up your files?
If that is the case, then I do not need to make a full 160gb partition using Time Machine. But if I have the space, and it is automated as well, then should I just use Carbon Copy INSTEAD of Time Machine?

To answer your questions:
- You need to declare the second disk a "Time Machine" disk - just tell TM that you want to back up on that drive. You don't need a separate partition. You can just back up the SSD to the HD. It won't override anything, it will just create a backup folder which lives happily next to any other stuff you might throw on the drive.
- You will probably need to tell TM to _not_ back up the second disk as you can't back up a disk onto itself. I haven't had two fixed HDs yet but I think TM will want to back up all internal drives by default, so you need to exclude the drive from TM. Easy to do in the TM preferences.
- TM backs up the whole drive including OS X files. The only thing it doesn't do is create a bootable OS X install. So in order to recover via TM, you need to start from CD or another bootable OS X install, then use TM to recover _everything_.
- Cloning is possible too but it takes much longer than TM - that's because TM uses information from spotlight to determine which files have changed. That's what makes TM incredibly fast and seamless. CCC or another cloner need to run rsync to check which files differ, which takes a pretty long time. The advantage is that you end up with a bootable partition for instant recovery, the disadvantage is that you can't run it every hour like TM, takes way too long and uses way too many resources.
- TM does incremental backups which means you can go back in history as drive space allows, another advantage over cloning.

I think that TM is the better solution - recovery from complete loss of hard drive takes much longer than a clone, but how often do you expect that to happen? You'd be pretty unlucky if it happened more than 1x per year. Hopefully the SSD will be much more robust than a HD too.

In all other aspects, TM is vastly superior to a clone.

MacBook Air SuperDrive for $30.00

Hey, I just bought a MacBook Air SuperDrive on ebay for $30.00.
They say it is broken because it has a cut cable. That is simple enough to fix.
Now I just need to get my SSD and drive cradle.

time machine is not superior as it cannot be booted in a drive failure....it has to be restored then booted.

no good if you need your files bad.

i would clone and do the time machine backup

Cool, thanks for the info.
I don't think I would need my info that quickly.
And I am not running a RAID0, so the likelihood of loosing my OS operation, I think is pretty slim.

So, i bought the caddy that DoFoT9 bought, the first one, the SATA to Sata one. Thats going to work right? It will fit, and i dont need to do anything else?

Dunno why you bought the same one as him. He clearly stated that he was having problems with it, and don't know if he fixed them yet..

the SATA to SATA one should be fine :) im still not sure if the caddy conversion that is causing the problem (SATA to PATA), or my motherboard.

i have the replacement here ready to be checked - i have assignments to do and wont be able to do it for a few days. i will post results. the ebay seller has been VERY nice.

Well, it seems like an extremely basic piece of hardware, and it shouldn't cost 50 bucks. I got mine for $20.00.

If it doesnt work, then I will just buy the cables that this post started with, and rig it up, using the caddy to hold everything in place.

I figured one of you would have chimed in and told me that apple limits the superdrive to the Air only.

Now I have to hack it. oh well, its only 6 bucks for the part, and it is a nice looking drive.

My Intel 80GB SSD arrived today so I swapped out drives and I can now proceed with the project.

Pics of OEM drive in the caddy.
