I just paid the $30 bucks since that is not alot. looks like it will work on my 13" uMBP and I will eventually get a nice 120GB SSD (Intel or OCZ). I am going to boot from the SSD and put my 250GB HDD in the bay.

Just got done doing the same thing today, installed my OEM 250GB HDD in the opti caddy. Definitely a fun project to do.

Does the ole' HDD/Disk Drive swap void the warranty? If so, would they be able to tell if you put the SuperDrive back in if you had any issues?

from the older aluminum MBPs, they wouldnt be able to tell if you did it properly (and didnt break anything lol). not sure about the newer ones or the fact that it voids warranty.

OK, I'm getting ready to get 80Gb X-25.
Please advise what I'd need on '07 MBP (PATA CDD)

I'd really love to keep HDD (for data) in original place & boot/sleep SSD from optibay.
Does SL make it easier to use it in this way (issues with waking from sleep etc)?

To heck with SMS, TM to the rescue ;)

Just realized that in my case SSD over PATA makes very little sense ...
HDD will go OBHD

So tell me SSD people - does it make a big difference when you have your databases (iTunes, iPhoto) on HDD?
Any troubles? Does it feel different?

Can you map your user folder to external drive completely?
I'll stop short of that, but don't want to navigate to another drive in finder. Ideally I'd rather not see drives at all - all routed automatic.

(Thinking now about 20Gb/$60 X-25 )

BTW can you bootcamp & fusion your windows sitting on HDD?

... In Finder, the default Places (Desktop, home directory, Applications, Documents, Downloads etc) will point to the user directory on the HDD ...

Wow! Thanks for highly informative answer!

Is it possible to map this way only parts of user "directory" say Downloads to a matching folder on HDD?
(I know I can create folder's alias and drop files on it ...)

Wow I'm really tempted to try this, considering I'd love more than 500GB HDD space and hardly ever need my optical drive.

What I'm wondering is if there is there any product available that covers the disc slot once the optical drive is removed? A piece of aluminum that fits perfectly inside the slot, for instance? With no optical drive, it seems a little strange to have an opening on the side of my computer that doesn't do anything.

Well, you'll be selling it one day, so I assume it could be nothing permanent ....
Then it only makes cosmetic sense ...

Yet cosmetically it's the hardest job - almost impossible - to make spotless flush alu surface

And you don't realize how ugly will even spotless empty side will look like, especially with lonely (& misplaced) kensington lock hole.

So in the end you'll end up with ugly looking side & potential resale value breaker.

Hey guys,
I know it didn't work on the older MacBook Pros, but is it now possible to buy the $99 MacBook Air SuperDrive and use that as an external on the aluminum MBPs?
