Are you sure? Because I already have a 2.5" SSD connected to my desktop, and I just used a normal SATA cable. I didn't anything like this.

Edit: You know, when I look at the picture of the one on DX and the one on Startech, the combined connector is a lot smaller on the startech one. I think DivineEvil is right, and that this is not a Slimline Sata adapter.
Does anyone know if DX has an adapter like this?

Or for a few $ more you can get this

That's what I have, should fit perfectly in my umbp 17 (early 2009). I'll install tomorrow.

Nope. Due to some weird customs rules in Norway, if I order anything that costs more than 35-ish USD, I have to pay VAT and a customs fee that would more than double the price.

Edit: And I think that connector is wrong...

So, Thursday afternoon I received my new stock 13" UMBP 2.26 GHz and proceeded to modify it that night. I had a 80GB Intel G2 SSD drive ready and had ordered 4MB of RAM and the 2nd HHD bay caddy and external slim drive enclosure from the AyaGroup. The RAM upgrade went without a hitch as well as the SSD drive.
The caddy needed a few modifications before it went in. I had to take off the front plastic bezel and enlarge the back plastic holes so that the screws that were used to hold the secure plate down fit.
I had a 250GB notebook drive that I was using as a backup and put it into the caddy. It'll be where I'll hold most of my data and stuff. The SSD I'll use for boot up and applications. The stock drive I'll use as the backup now. It'll go into the enclosure I had for the 250.
I reinstalled Snow Leopard on to the SSD and left the iLife applications out since I hardly use those. Now I'm posting from my new machine, "The Silver Surfer". Wow! What speed. Everything is running. I'm enjoying this machine. Getting use to the new touch pad gesture as well.

I always use animal names for my machines...
My old Whitebook was Rabbit, and I think the 17" that I get next weekend will be Badger - you know, silver colored carnivore that sometimes eat rabbits...

Ah customs... the bane of the global citizen.

The connector is not wrong, I just booted my MBP with the setup for the first time. It's fast! :)

I mounted the SSD in the optibay because I was concerned it would flap around, but it turns out the newmodeus caddy is extremely flush with the bottom of the MBP. I initially glued some foam on because the newmodeus caddy is held in by only two screws at the back, whereas the DVD drive has two more in front.
But with the foam on the bottom plate would not fit properly. This was a very thin piece of foam. So that's a snug fit if I have ever seen one. It's perfect, really.

Anyway - it works just fine.

One advantage of leaving the HD in the main bay was that I could safely move over to the new system. I copied the entire system over, except my heavyweight folders (media, mostly). Then created symlinks to the media folders on the original disks. Rebooted. Works.

Now I am going to move the media folders to a new 500GB drive and put that in instead of the original and the move will be complete. The original 320GB drive is going to serve as a spare boot disk should anything go wrong with the new setup.

Can some1 give me a link to a cheap (15$ max) box for my SuperDrive after I remove it from the MBP...

Anyone having any issues with the boot SSD running on the optical drive's SATA bus? On current 13 or 17 unibody machines with all software updates.

I am thinking of redoing my setup and putting my SSD there.

Thanks for the suggestion! I found the setting under the options tab and made the change, but the same thing happens. When I close the display to put the system to sleep the light for the apple logo goes off, but the led on the display release does not start blinking. The light stays solid and if I open the display the system does not wake up. The only option is to hold the power button down.

I am having exactly same problem here.

The OS in the optibay hdd would hang after sleep. In fact the OptiBay HDD's power is disconnected once the system sleeps.

Does someone know a solution? Many thanks!

If you close the lid and the light doesn't start blinking that means it doesn't go to sleep. When you then open the display and it's black it means the system is hung - it turned off the display, but failed to enter sleep mode.

17 unibody - I have the SSD in the optibay, booting from it. Works just fine. I'd think the system sees it as just another SATA device.

I put the SSD there because I was worried a HD might get too hot or bumped around in this location. The SSD is much more solid in that regard (pun intended).

It is not the case. I have no problem with the other hhd running the OS.

Besides, it's not necessary to close the lid. It hangs when I sleep the system from the APPLE menu. I can hear the hdd stop turning suddenly when the OS sleep.

By the way, my optibay is a Pata-to-Sata one.

I guess it won't work because of the different sizes... I'm back to thinking I'll just buy a blu-ray drive.

OR: I could just use the circuit board from that DVD-frame and fasten it to the drive with electricians tape. That's what we in Norway call "fjøsmekk" (Loosely translated as mechanics you do in the barn)

previous posts in this thread show the proper caddy for it cheap, the faceplate will need a little modification but will work fairly well.

i am working with a chineese supplier to get new cases that will work.

When you install the DVD in that caddy, please post some photos and some coments on how it went and does it works. If everything is OK Ill buy one also.

I posted pictures of this in another thread. The only bad thing about it is there's no front slot loading cover but otherwise looks fine & works fine too.

Do you have a link to a site that has a faceplate that fits? Do you know if it just pops into the slot itself?

I could have used a slot loading faceplate but then I would have had to cut the mounting pieces from the SD front. My choice was to keep the SD whole just in case I had to take the computer back to Apple for warranty work. ;)

Thanks. I thought you meant that there was a cover for the slot on the side of the MBP. Sorry about that.

well in that regard, i have designed one of those to fill the empty slot with grey plastic spray painted with silver, which is completely removable for warranty purposes, i can make you one if you want.

Got the cable from Startech today. Overnight shipped across countries FTW! :D

Edit: To bad my Laptop won't be here till sunday.

Edit2: Ok, I'm confused. The Slimline sata power connector that goes into the MBP has two wires coming out of it, not four - and those are red and black. Isn't black ground? Should I just rewire them as if it was yellow? I mean, it can't be + and ground...

Edit3: Apparently it can. It's apparently 5V and ground, which seems about right.
