Ok, quick question. I have a 2.4 Santa Rosa MBP Model No. A1226. I have a X25G2 and I want to put a spare hd in like some of you guys have.

I just opened up my case to take a peek. My superdrive's model number is UJ-857-C. I thought I would know what I was looking for when I opened it up but after putting it back together and a little research I find myself here.

If anyone can shed some light, I would appreciate it. Thanks guys.

that will use a PATA optical drive. so search for a PATA caddy that can take SATA hard drives. thats the spot ;)

I was thinking that. Will I lose any performance with a PATA to SATA connection?

Thanks

technically yes, any sort of "change over" connection will cause slow downs, but they will be minimal at most. we wouldnt notice them. PATA only allows 133MB/s transfer, but 2.5 laptop drives are not that fast, so it should be fine.

Ok, good stuff. Thanks to your help, you are about to lighten my wallet a bit tonight. I think I am going to go ahead and order a caddy from newmodeus and just stick my old 320gb 7200rpm drive in here with my 80gb ssd. Sounds like a good combo. Hopefully I won't expierence any problems with sleeping/waking or anything to that extent since my main os is still in the "right" spot.

Again, thanks for the advice.

sorry  :p :D

i hope it all works out good for you! let us know how it goes :)

no problem with the help, anytime.

Well, it will be on it's way tomorrow.:D I miss having my iTunes library and most importantly my photos with me at all times. I'm going to dig this setup.

Hopefully I didn't pull a bonehead move and order the wrong one. I have a OBHD9-SATA-B coming to me. I believe it is the right one. We shall see. I'll keep you guys updated.

Thanks DoFo

no it will not work in that model , only unibody models and white macbook 2.0/2.4 2009 models.

Why does it only work on the above mentioned models?

Here is my question though, I've already bought the overpriced MCE optibay thingie, too late now and I live in the UK so I'm not shipping it back. I'm doing this on a MacBook 2007 which already has 1 500GB 7200rpm drive, a FW 500GB 5400 TM drive and a secondary backup via daisy chain, 320GB 7200rpm drive.

I'm thinking of of either getting a SSD or setting up 2 500GB 7200rpm drives into a RAID 0 (purchasing another 500GB 7200rpm drive).

1, If I get the SSD, where do I stick my Aperture library? This is easily the slowest App on my machine so I want to benefit mostly from this.

2, If I don't put my Aperture library on the SSD, what is the point of it being on the HD because I still have to access the HD in the normal way?

3, The SSD also slows down over time right because OSX doesn't support the TRIM command yet?

4, But wouldn't a format solve this problem say after a year of use, if not why not?

5, What is the state of the optical drive once it becomes an external drive. I read about the Hex editing but do you still need to do this with SL?

6, If so why not with the MBA?

HUGE bag of questions, thanks for answering them and I have read every post, while some questions are similar I would like some clarification thats all. Plus I figure it would be good to re-cap for the lazy readers entering on this page.

Just installed this…

Hi!

I just installed this in my late 2008 MBP 15:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360186033530

Works like a charm. Just needed to pry off the plastic bezel.

Great price at $25 plus $18 for shipping to Europe. Cheaper than shipping from US sellers for us Europeans.

Ships from China. Swisspost failed at its express shipping promise. Seller made up for this by dispatching a second item. Kudos!

Can anybody find an answer to my questions please? The most important one is regarding Aperture.

I'm going to try here but this is my thought as an Aperture user.
If you access your library from the 2nd HDD then it is no different than accessing your library from an external FW drive I'd guess. My intention is to do it this way myself. The SSD is too small to be loading it up with my entire Aperture library. However, this question could be answered by someone who may keep their iPhoto library on the 2nd drive.

I can make my Aperture library fit on a 64GB SSD or 128SSD if I need to.

Try the aperture library on the HD first. If it's still slow, move it to the SSD.

I think it won't make too much of a difference because the aperture library consists of comparatively few comparatively large files - that's just what hard disks are good at. SSD is faster, but only by 2x - 3x. Whereas, for small random read access the SSD absolutely trounces hard disks - the HDs will go down to 1MB/s and even much less, where the SSD still delivers 70MB/s.

The HD has 50MB/s - maybe real life 30MB/s for large files reads/writes.

So, i applied this mod about 2 months ago, and it works perfectly on my late 08 uMBP. About 2 weeks ago, my regular hard drive crashed (kept making a ticking noize). Luckily, i had a Time Machine backup. So I removed the entire mod, placed the superdrive back in, and closed the macbook. I brought it to the Apple store, and they replaced the hard drive no problem. It's nice to know i still have warrenty, as long as I take the mod out . Took me about an hour to reinstall the mod, and now my macbook is good as new!:)

Just finished to mod my 17" late 2006 iMac.

I bought the PATA--->SATA caddy from a chinese ebayer.

New iMacs (March 2009, October 2009) have a SATA Superdrive, so if you want to do what I did to a new iMac, be sure to get a SATA ---> SATA caddy.

(posted this here 'cause is kinda the "2nd hdd caddy" official thread)

My apologies in advance if this has been asked before, but 17 pages is a lot, and I did search.

I ordered a 17" last week, and am still waiting for it. I intend to use a 30gb Vertex SSD for OS/Software, and the 500GB 5400RPM drive that comes with the machine for data.
Am I correct in thinking that the only adapter I need is this:

I'll buy an external Bluray drive, so the builtin will probably just go in the trash.

You are wrong. This is a cable to connect a 2.5" HDD/SSD to an ordinary Desktop.

I ordered a HDD caddy from ebay (the link is for an IBM thinkpad laptops, and it's located 2-3 pages back) 12$ and a few cents in total... Though I'll have to make a few modifications to the caddy to fit in my MBP 13".

yes, this cable will work, but you must modify the power connector like i have shown you in the very first few pages of this thread,

the 7pin will go into the notebook, the data then goes into your sata drive and you will need to cut a sata power connector and mate the red and black together with the ones on this cable,

good luck.

Don't throw it away. You'll need it if you ever want to sell your machine or get your machine serviced by Apple.

Right, so it's not a problem that it only has two leads on the power end?
Thanks for the good luck, I might need it :)

And Steffi: good point, I'll hang on to it!

Are you sure? Because I already have a 2.5" SSD connected to my desktop, and I just used a normal SATA cable. I didn't anything like this.

Edit: You know, when I look at the picture of the one on DX and the one on Startech, the combined connector is a lot smaller on the startech one. I think DivineEvil is right, and that this is not a Slimline Sata adapter.
Does anyone know if DX has an adapter like this?

Regardless, the end needs to be male instead of female for the umbp.

i would buy the tray, wiremod will only reduce a little wight and add a slight bit of air flow.

im working on packing a small blower into my slimmed down wire mod to add cooling :D.....definitly a warranty voider :D.

i have mine modded with a white hdd light for my optibay i put it behind the speaker grill.

its a beauty.....

What do you do with the slot for the DVDs? Just leave it like it is, or tape over it to reduce dust?
