I'm not sure that's true. Can someone confirm SATA III speeds with the nimitz/smk312 adapter?

Alot of people are confused about this after reading alot of posts where users reported sata1 link speeds.

I can tell you, if you buy a caddy that has a SATA connector (granted it isnt from the middle ages) it will just have the same speed as your macbook pro pro it is connected to.

I bought the nimitz "Special design" caddy for my MBP 2011 15" and it has exceeded my expectations!

It fits perfectly in the optical drive bay and doesn't move around at all. I didn't even need to replace the screws - it's firmly in place. It runs SATA II speed and arrived a week after ordering it.

I initially placed my SSD in the optical drive bay and the HDD in the hard drive bay. Installed OS X on the SSD and used the HDD for the Users directories (outlined here). After switching my Home folder in the System Preferences>Accounts>Advanced and rebooting, I couldn't login. So I switched the drive bays and that fixed the problem.

hey guys,

This has probably been answered before but it is a 58 page thread...

I'm looking for a caddy to put in my Late 2008 unibody MacBook (5,1).

MCE and OWC are total rip-offs and, as many, I am looking for a solution in ebay, but there are so much options, from $5 to $50... I'm looking for something that fits well and is tightly secured (specially because I'm going to put my HDD in there), but obviously if it's light and good quality even better.

I've read about 2011 MBPs needing a special format, but what I want is something that fits really well on my Late 2008 unibody MacBook.

Thanks!

If you throw out those 2 because of price, it leaves only one. This is
the only one that secures with all 3 mounting screws. Most, only use ONE. The people that use those say they're secure enough, I say BS! Tell me then, why does Apple mount the SuperDrive with 3 screws? Hers'e the link, 100% Positive Feedback and over 100 sold.

Here's another one with the same design. Appears to be the same product but approx. $5 less.

As long as I don't reboot my Mac (which I rarely do), my link speed stays at 3Gbps.

Had to reboot today due to the OS X update and it was back down to 1.5. Rebooted again and held down Option at start up to force it to choose SSD as my startup disk (there is only one option). Back at 3Gbps :)

It seems holding down Option is a fairly reliable way of forcing it to 3Gbps, although it hasn't worked every time. Don't ask me why!

And the 1.5 or 3 Gb/s limitation is not just what system profiler displays, but shows up in decreased benchmark performance too?

Be careful, I've seen some MBA superdrive look-alike enclosures that ask you to remove the extra mounting tabs on your uMBP's superdrive. That's something I would never do (my laptop is still under applecare)- the replacement is more than $80 if you ever need to get your computer repaired under warranty or perhaps sell it.

The Apple MBA superdrive will not fit a uMBP's superdrive (with the 2 extra tabs) and the SATA to USB adapter board behind it. Trust me I've tried and been disappointed : (

this one i got, and now working happily.
installed mine directly, without having to physically change anything of the superDrive off mine. just slots in with some alignment work as described. :) very happy with the unit myself. boooyah.

only shortfall would be the reject button doesn't drive the USB. have to physcially put the CD to Trash to reject or option-click Reject. managed to enable looking at Remote disc with two command functions. any idea to set the Eject button to eject USB discs?

-this works very well. I've been using it for months without a hiccup

Do you have a link to the enclosure you bought?

Thank you for the reference and the write up.

regarding Note 3: KeyRemap4Macbook takes a little bit to startup on my MBP, your experience may differ.

do you mean the boot up time is a couple of seconds used for KR4M?

That looks like an excellent piece of hardware, and the right price, too ($30).

I like this quote from the ebay page: "If we can do this, anyone can" :p

Once I get the Nimitz I will do a test-run with a Crucial M4 6G SSD and report back (MBP built in May with 6G Optibay).

Hello guys,

as i'm on the way to get my Macbook pro, i have slowly started to order things like optibay alternative (fenvi, nimitz) and also external usb enclosure for the superdrive (Air-lookalike).

All of them already arrived and i have made some pictures, perhaps someone will find it usefull.

It comes in the simple package like this without any instructions or description.

Packed in a plastic form, apple-like.

The top part of the enclosure.

Inside view.

Inside view. There is a felt stripe glued on the slot opening (not very good visible here, i guess)

IMG_6272.jpg

PCB view.

IMG_6276.jpg

Other side of PCB. PCB is machined and looks like even had some sort of quality control (acc. to sticker).

Bottom Part.

Bottom part is out of metal with the large rubber ring glued on.

Overall quality is ok, tests and report will follow.

KR4M working Flawlessly. Great write up too. :)
anyway, i now have the Remote Disc and the eject button fully functional with this USB enclosure.
Happy :D

Got my Nimitz and will do a quick test with a 6G Crucial M4 SSD to report whether it works at 6G or not. Will report back once done.

It's only a plug changer. It will give you whatever speed your laptop already has. Just get the $10 one.

one would believe that all are just a simple connector adapter.

i have had one that had stability problem on my MB5,1 (refer to an earlier post 1417's pictures)
programs won't run, and KP just because of the caddy.
same harddisk on a different caddy that used to work perfectly fine.

i then open up both and found, the one that was unstable, the Printed circuit board was populated by hand and has a mystery resistor in-line (series) to a data line, it shouldn't cause any problems as for digital signals are concerned. but it does create a RC filter if the capacitance of the connector are significant enough that causes not so square outputs perhaps, which probably was the case for the instability...
