Does that one screw in at 3 points or do you have to break a piece off? Oh and a FYI...80% of ebay is from hong kong so a name would make things a lot easier.

Idk about the mounting points, but just search eBay for "macbook pro caddy" and make sure you get a 9.5mm one. I don't keep track of seller names when looking for cheap Hong Kong stuff since prices change often and I don't owe allegiance to any certain seller.

I will say that the one that mounts in the original screw holes is nice, so if it's only a few more $ for one, I'd definitely get that.

There is no button outside on the enclosure for ejecting. I think it is possible from OS only.

I wrote a how to on how to make the eject button work with an external drive...here is the link to it. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1073018/

The one from nimitz/smk312 uses the original mounting points...all 3. Requires no breaking off and fits nicely, highly recommended.

Sounds good enough to me, since I don't usually (if ever) write disks...
How about ejecting? I don't see a button anywhere :/

Oh, and one more, 900mA power consumption might be not only by writing. My big concern is, that the internal superdrive needs more than 500mA also for reading, spin-up of the media, and that the USB port in this case could be permanently overloaded.

For example, my 12.5 mm drive that i tested (Toshiba TS-T633A/FSCE), according to Dell website, has typical operating current of 1.3A!!! You would need actually 3 (500mA) USB ports to power it properly. I tried using it on only one port on my desktop PC (it worked partially), but this was very dangereous test, which i will not repeat!

Unless there is a way to get 1000mA from single Macbook USB port, i would strongly recommend to use this enclosure with Y-cable, to draw current from 2 ports.

it seems quite difficult to get hold of the Spec sheet for the "superdrive"
unless we can probe the 5V line to seek what the peak current is using an ammeter, very difficult to find any quoted data off the web.

as for this write up, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4049

it is possible, given the right device ID, for all unibody machines to provide Current greater than the USB standard.

Apple peripheral devices may request more than 500 mA (Milliamps) at 5 V (Volts) from a port to function or to allow for faster charging. Such Apple peripheral devices include:

Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive (when connected to supported computers)
Aluminum Wired Keyboard*
iPod
iPhone
iPad

To meet requests for additional power from these Apple peripherals and devices, some Apple computers and displays can provide up to 1100 mA at 5 V through the port to which the Apple peripheral or device is connected. This power is available under certain conditions:

An Apple peripheral device must be plugged directly into an Apple computer or display. Apple peripheral devices connected to hubs will not have access to extra power above the standard USB specification of 500 mA.
Your Apple computer or display must be powered on and must be awake. If your Apple computer or display is asleep, all ports will provide a maximum of 500 mA at 5 V. If your Apple computer or display is powered off, no power will be provided.
The port providing extra power is determined by the first Apple peripheral or device to connect to the Apple computer or display that requires power beyond 500 mA at 5 V. The remaining ports will continue to offer 500 mA at 5 V. Some Apple computer and displays may offer the ability to operate more than one USB port at 1100 mA at 5 V. On those computers, the second or third port is enabled when an appropriate device is connected.
An Apple computer started up to Windows via BootCamp will not provide extra power.

i am too trying to find a definitive way that a device, given the right kick with the USB IO kext, if it is at all possible to make OSX to believe a 3rd party hardware is an apple device, hence the USB 0.5A limitation perhaps gets lifted, happy jolly. but as work is busy, can only spend an hour each day to look into details. any kext experts out there would kindly point me to the right direction would be deeply appreciated. :)

have fun with Lion, (PS the inverted gesture is lowering my productivity, and trying to get used to it. ):cool:

Just burnt a Lion Install Disc with it the single USB external DVD enclosure, from Lion's Disk Utility.

burnt successfully. the auto verify function after image burn from Disk Utility didn't quite finish its verification.

but got the DVD, ripped the image as a .dmg. no problems.
also did a video but haven't quite put it together.

in that i was attempting to continuously refreshing the USB page to see Current Required would refresh but it didn't, it wasn't live.

New Optibay from Fenvi providing two extra mounting holes. for anyone whom is interested.

I just got today in my mail the Fenvi optical bay caddy from 'Segoo' on eBay. I'll be installing it in the coming days. Will answer any questions if needed :)

I've had my Optibay installed now for about a year, with an SSD, which I boot from, but I recently got another HDD that has built in free-fall detection. So I was thinking of switching the SSD to the built in hard drive slot and putting the new HDD in the Optibay, so that my MBP can actually be put to sleep properly.

But I remember there being an issue with putting an SSD or a HDD that has free-fall detection in the hard drive slot (b/c of Apple's built in free-fall detection) and that you would have to turn Apple's system off if you were to place an SSD there, could someone confirm this/point me in the right direction.

Yep, you can do it in Terminal.

Disabling the Sudden Motion Sensor in Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6:

In Terminal, which should still be open from the previous step, you can disable the Sudden Motion Sensor by typing sudo pmset -a sms 0 and pressing Return (changing the setting to a zero disables the module).
Type your administrator password when you are prompted and press Return.
Type the sudo pmset -g command again to be sure that the setting has been applied.

I knew I wasn't using the right terminology, I couldn't find anything the way I was typing it, Thank you!

So are the ones from Nimitz or the Fenvi style ones the better to buy from Ebay?

Also, I'm looking to eventually put an SSD in the optibay, but right now I don't have the cash, but wanted to put my old 250gb HD in there for the time being. By doing this, is there a way I can disable the optibay HD from spinning when it isn't in use? I want to do this so that it doesn't affect my battery life unless I am actually accessing that HD.

After much deliberation I (2011 15" MBP) ordered the 'special' from Nimitz. It all works perfectly, easy to fit, despite finding out I had torx screws rather than Phillips. No more than 20 mins and it was all done, well worth the minimal cost!

Thanks for those that contributed to this thread, lots of reading but lots of help.

Help!

Can someone please help.... I just bought a new MBP and I would like to install an HD in the optical bay. My problem is I'm deploying to Afghanistan in a week and I'm trying to get this done before I leave. So while I search the site, I figured I'd put up a "please help me" post. Can someone point me to where I can get a good bracket for the MBP and the enclosure for the optical drive with expedited shipping to get it here fast! I've checked a couple on ebay and they say 7-10 days is the best they can do. Thanks for your help!

Where are you located? I have an extra Fenvi one (same as this) that I'd be happy to send you for free. I'm in the Miami area, but Priority Mail should get anywhere in the US within 3 days... PM me with your address if you're interested and I'll have it out in the morning. Thank you for your service, and stay safe over there!

As for the external optical enclosure, you may have to order something from Newegg (like this) with Rush service, since they have 3-day shipping. This one (choose the $24.95 option in the drop-down list) is a nice one, but it may take too long to receive.

Do you already have the extra hard drive? If not, Newegg is a great place to pick that up as well.

For those of you that ordered the Nimitz one how long did it take for you to receive your caddy.

According to USPS its still stuck in China? Its been 8 days since I ordered it and its still stuck there?
