IIRC, pre-unibody macs don't have SATA optical bays. Correct me if I'm wrong.

seems about right, i never knew :(

from this list there was ONE that seems to like the correct one. what do you reckon??

it looks like the correct interface..(ignore the circle).

i believe there are no PATA caddies anywhere, apart from the "real" opti-bay, is correct? ebay didn't return any results for me :(

there is MCE itself ;)))
For 129$, that's why we exploring other options in this thread here.

Though I believe I saw a link here for a SATA to IDE/PATA caddy somewhere around here, and if you look around this forum thread you probably would find it.

i am afraid the MCE version is out of the equation, as it is too expensive for me :(

the one above looks to be alright, ill think about it for a bit :)

Why wouldnt you just buy the newmodeus caddy in the first place, the one which several forum members have used successfully? They even have PATA versions

DoFoT9, just get it over with and get the newmodeus one. Done deal.

not to be rude, but cant you two read?? it is too expensive for a poor uni student like me! the postage for that thing would add another $30 onto it without doubt.

If only you had... well I know you didn't ask for a link but the second one from the bottom of this list seems also right. Just another option for you to consider.

dont get me wrong i would love to purchase it, save a lot of hassle. but i believe i have found the right one on ebay this time (contacting the vendor to MAKE sure) haha, thanks anyway.

$9.04 to AUS using USPS but you're right it's your call. Though some people might wonder why a poor university student would want to swap the optical drive for an extra hdd or sdd in the first place (and how would he fund that with tuition coming up) :D

$9 is not too bad. its the initial investment that scares me.. $25 sounds alot better to me then $130, if it gets the job done.....

1. the optical drive does not work
2. i have an external optical FW drive that does work
3. i have the 2.5" HD ready to go, i just need something to put it into!

university does not work the same way over here, our fees are put against our name, called "HEX". once we earn over ~$30k or so it will come out as a tax amount (somewhere around 2% of what we earn).

:)

Ok, I was referring to the Newmodeus option btw ($42).

Convenient system!

really....mce is just the newmodeus adapter but more expensive. almost 100$

you must be rich to give someone 100$ more for the same thing....mce is the biggest waste of money ever....they just took advantage of a hard to find product.

I was under the impression the newmodeus adapter had to be modified in some way to mount in the MBP?

yes it did, i was under the impression that my optical drive had a sata interface too. clearly not.

so i guess my choices are this:
1. re-sell it on ebay
2. chuck it in the bin

newmodeus has PATA caddies. Mine has just arrived (it's SATA because I have a umbp which has a SATA optical, unlike yours). I am impressed with them, prompt shipping, good service! No problems with exotic location. Will install as time allows, very excited. I am not going to wait for the G2 to become available, I'll just run with the 500GB drive in the optical and the 320 I already have and start migrating data over to the 500... I'll empty the 320 until I can just duplicate the drive to the new Intel drive. I just use Disk Utility "Restore" to do that. Apple-approved and free.

So much for saving money, ey? ;) Just kidding... if you resell on ebay you'll probably make a profit. So go for it!

Looking at the newmodeus caddy, it really looks perfect. No wonder MMM prefers it over his homebrew - because this thing looks rock solid while being very light. The HD is surrounded by metal which will help heat dissipation. It looks like a really nice cradle.

Extra props for using a plastic bag filled with paper strips for padding. It's effective, and much more environmentally friendly than styrofoam chips. Exciting!

i have found the appropriate ebay model, i talked to the seller and its all good :) i will purchase it and if it does not work THEN i will get the newmodeus model ;)

if anybody is interested in australia for the model I have that does not fit mine (but will fit any unibody machine) just PM me and we can sort something out before i put it on ebay either 2nite or 2morrow night :)

This may be a dumb question but.. what if I need to boot from the OS X DVD, or if I need to install OS X? Say, Snow Leopard?

I have heard that booting or installing doesn't work from an external USB DVD drive?! Or maybe it does but only with the Apple external superdrive? Does anyone know this?

boots fine from external cdroms....or memory sticks

i reccomend restoring your osx restore disc to a memory stick 8gb or more and use that to reinstall.

saves time and space
