Whoops! Steve J is calling the lawyers as we speak...lol....In all seriousness, I hope that a UI for the iphone is avalable, as well as the tablet. I'm all for something that could revolutionize the marketplace, but tablets have been falling flat in the past, with the exception of the Kindle.

The iPhone OS is designed for a cell phone

Wrong. iPhone OS is the result of a project know as "Safari Pad"; a tablet OS. It was scaled down to a phone.

Now, we are not going to see the current iPhone OS on a 10" screen. Interfaces and interactions will be different. But make no mistake, it will be the iPhone OS (a subset + extensions of Darwin and OS X).

This isn't news. We all know iPhone OS is built on OSX and that the Tablet will be built on iPhone OS.

Desktop file based Operating systems are legacy - 40 years old already.

OSX is the best of breed but integrative and pre-emptive Multi-touch interface based OS is a whole new direction and beats the crap out of clicking files and folders open with pointers.

I think the sheer star-trekian elasticity of iPhone OSX 4.0 will be like seeing the the first Mac Plus in 1984 all over again.

As for Tezza McStrawman, he seems like a nice guy - I'm sure Steve is fully aware of how utterly dopey old-school CEO's in suits can be (Sculley anyone?).

Even if it's an unsolicited leak- at this stage I think New Steve will just roll his eyes and shake his head and rub his hands with glee about tomorrows fun fair!

Enough Already

I can't take this! I can't wait to see the thing.

As I have said many times so far though - please, please release new MBP's with a "shipping now" status!!!!

Nope. It's a well-timed Apple PR leak.

Not sure they need a PR leak the day before and like this... guy just couldn't keep his mouth shut when the lights and cameras turned on him. He is going to regret this 'leak' for sure.

Controlled leak? My a*se. Do you really think Steve Jobs et al built up a list of rumors far and wide from different sources, rising to an enormous crescendo on the 26th only to have it "leaked" by some CEO berk on a 2bit network... methinks you're not thinking clearly...

If anything this is like spitting in Steve's face, maybe he didn't like the terms of the agreement but had to accept them anyway or else face losing massive revenue. He did it, but he didn't like it, and this is a way of getting back at Steve. Stealing this thunder. Remember Steve hasn't been on stage for a long long time and it's only once in a blue moon you get to annouce a product like this.

Good CEOs are not that obviously petty. McGraw wasn't trying to "get back" at Jobs. That's ridiculous. He didn't even tell more than what we already suspected. My guess is that the tablet is more than it's OS engine. We still don't know A LOT -- like UI, type of screen, input options, wireless options. I have a feeling SJ will have PLENTY of thunder to clap tomorrow. What McGraw said only ramps up, not unveils, the mystery.

Also I'm not sure how CNBC is a "2bit network" either. It's the leading biz channel in the U.S.

iPhone OS is just Mac OS without the GUI stuff, and with UIKit bolted on (more or less, anyway). UIKit was clearly not intended for a tablet (this is particularly apparent to those of us who saw the first released version of the SDK), but the good news is it's very extensible and will likely work great for a tablet.

So how positive are we that the Tablet will be using OS 4.0. Honestly that's 80% of what I'm interested in as I'm not in the position to get a tablet any time soon but I am planning to get an iphone this summer, so I really want to see this new OS.

And if the tablet is using a variation of the iphone OS can we assume that it will be the same (just smaller scale) on the next iphone? I must have these questions answered.

You will have all these questions answered and more.....tomorrow! ;):D

i'd agree. this just confirms and takes some air out of the possible announcement tomorrow. it doesn't seem like mcgraw-hill is familiar with the rules to follow when working with apple

I love it when people pull out this line. I'm sure someone would be happy with a Ford instead of a Ferrari because they're both cars.

Are you somehow implying that a Ford = iPhone OS, and Ferrari = Mac OS X?

If we can both agree that a Ferrari is of a higher-quality* than a Ford, what you're saying is Mac OS X is higher quality than iPhone OS, which is terribly untrue. They are the same operating system with different user interfaces that serve different purposes and differing usage scenarios. A more apt analogy would be two Ferrari's, with one being tuned for the road and the other tuned for the track. Same car, different uses. It's not entirely true that their purposed are mutually exclusive, as one could be used in the place of the other, but both are optimised for their own target uses.

*"higher-quality" is just an arbitrary mode of comparison and can be replaced by anything you wish, and the point still stands.

Oooops

This stupid CEO's company is so going to be excluded from any content deals that well ever be made for the new Tablet, or for the iPhone, or for Mac, or for anything Apple ever makes from today and until the end of the world.

I would sell all stock in that company now if I had any.

Agree that it is a well timed leak.

So much speculation on the tablet. What a wonderful way to calm down expectations and create a better environment for it's introduction in a few hours.

This makes a lot of sense to me. May have been to avoid expectations of OSX, get everyone on the same page kinda thing.

NBC look at the Conan/Leno debacle :)

How do you know he's a good CEO? If he's capable of doing this, what other blunders may he have committed without notice. He's got plausible deniability. ie. they asked me to leak it but, lets be honest. Why would they leave the actual first legitimate confirmation of the existence of the mythical Apple tablet to some guy who's name 98% of macrumors users didn't even know of until today? It doesn't add up.

McGraw-Hill CEO Confirms Apple Tablet, iPhone OS Based, Going to Be "Terrific"

I would like to browse through this one, if I can afford the thing

kind of obvious that it was timed. Not sure if anyone mentioned this but notice how the caption/ticker at the bottom says "expect mcgraw hill ebook on apple tablet" before she even asks the question about the tablet.

Doesn't matter if it's lame it's still the industry standard no matter how much we'd like it to HTML 5 or quicktime. Please tell me where you can go to watch TV shows on the internet, legally. The #1 response is Hulu, I've wanted to watch Hulu on my iPhone for so, so long it's ridiculous. Now, we're going to have a 10" screen - the size of some laptops and you can't even watch streaming TV shows??

It's going to be a deal breaker for a lot of people - that or it's going to be hacked so quickly it won't matter...

iTunes. iTunes + additional content deals/streaming w/ lala. iTunes season pass. Until Hulu and other sites move to streaming that doesn't crash Safari daily, iTunes.

Anyone that still doesnt get that Apple will not allow Adobe the low API access for hardware acceleration of Flash and will not allow adobes flash runtime on their non-desktop OSs by now? Shrug. Apple wants to have control of the user experiance. They won't cede a major part of it (watching video) to a 3rd party.

I don't understand why so many of you are so upset. As others have said we basically knew or heavily suspected that Apple was going to in fact announce the creation of a tablet device tomorrow. The only really new information that was given away in the interview is that the device will operate on a iphone like UI/OS. Some of you are acting like the man brought the device with him and started demonstrating on live television.

And even if he did, so what? The whole point of this website is to get inside information. I come here to read as many articles that give as many details as possible into what Apple is planning for the future. Those of you that are upset had no problem with people posting reports about what the device might look like even posting stories confirming that ebooks would be available from top companies, which to me is more of a leak than anything else. It seems to me that you are ok reading stories and posts that are likely to be ******** or you believe to be ********, but when you read something that is true you get upset. WTF. If you don't want to be spoiled then why did you come to a website that's very job is to spoil you.

I don't sense a lot of upset. I sense a lot of surprise that he spilled a few beans.
