Yes, it is a beast; A beast that could use some new graphics cards (I don't like flashing cards and the GTX 285 driver's suck too much).

You do realize that it is referring to novels and not textbooks. Textbooks for college will still be insanely expensive, just now they are more portable. Realistically, one would probably still have some of their books as hard copies and some others as ebooks.

well im hoping steve has a whining nephew or neice or something who tells him how expensive college books are and he forces publishers to cut down prices. I mean are books not expensive because of all the "effort" that they have to do to "make them" and "ship them"?

Apple site is taken down prior to start of SJ's address
Lights dim. Steve takes stage to thunderous ovation
Steve wows everybody with new product(s) / updates, etc.
"One more thing" brings everybody to the brink of orgasm
Steve exits stage, lights come up.

Macrumors site rife with praise/bitching/nonchalance.

Can't wait.

So steve never comes back and explains anything? Ha?

uhhh HD as in Hard Drive..what are you talking about picture resolutions?

Exactly why people should adapt more HDD for Hard Disk Drive as to avoid the confusion. On the other hand, when one sees 720p, 1080p, the only logical explanation of HD would be resolution so I suppose it wouldn't matter too much.

To nitpick, you can do multithreading on iPhone OS, NSThread exists, you can use it (I have). That's not the same as backgrounding applications, which you cannot currently do.

You most certainly can run applications in the background on the iphone (a jailbroken device can run an app called backgrounder that does just that.)

The problem is that running apps in the background will take up memory and cpu, two things that drain the power of the iphone and that is why apple doesnt allow access to it. It will be interesting with the new processors out that if the battery life could be increased this could be implemented in this tablet device.

+5 you'd have to be really dumb to see HD, 720p and 1080p in the same sentence and ask hard drive? Seriously..

I'm betting they can offer textbooks for pretty cheap compared to the printed version. Companies spend a LOT of money printing books, hoping to sell them all. They also give out countless free books to professors, which jacks up the price that the students pay. By having an electronic version, publishers can give teachers temporary rights to a book without much hassle. Excessive printing is no more. Also, the content of these books can stay up to date very easily.

Additionally, companies, such as the one I work for, are looking to make electronic catalogs in place of our printed versions. I guarantee you my company will be interested in making our catalog for a color e-book reader.

LOL. The free books isn't what jacks up the price. It's a controlled supply and a captive audience. Electronic books will be only cheap enough to ensure that the used book market dies. Then they'll jack the prices back up.

I'm wondering if the basic problem here is that Apple mainly does incredible stuff when they take a difficult-to-use product and give it a great UI: Mac, iPod, iPhone.

When that isn't their goal, we get things like the Apple TV, Macbook Air, iPod Hi-Fi... and now the iPad.

But I dunno, maybe this thing will be the e-reader to end all e-readers... except that, again, there has never been a usability problem with e-readers. I'm starting to suspect this will not even have a transflective or Pixel-Qi screen. Oh well, guess we'll see tomorrow.

Who is with me for starting a company to make bathroom mounts for this thing.

There will be so much usage of these in toilets, that making mounts will be a gold mine!

I keep thinking of all the dropped tablets and broken screens--))))

Remember, some college students easily spend $1000+ per year just on books. I can see the appeal. However, the battery would have to be pretty good. Nothing worse than having to plug in just to read your book during class. We'll see in 12 hours!

I see it more like:
9:53: People are entering the building.
10:01: Music starts playing.
10:06: Lights dim. Crowd settles into seats with great anticipation.
10:11: SJ comes out. Gives an opener.
10:23: Most likely talking about minor updates (i.e. iLife, MBP maybe)
10:31: Say's "Now I am going to unveil to you the most innovative device yet".
10:33: Crowd starts to applaud the image on screen
11:02: SJ finishes giving rundown of device. Brings up App developers.
11:42: SJ comes back to announce availability, pricing, etc.
12:12: Conference ends. People go outside to see a demo unit (or an iTablet in a bullet proof safe).
All this will happen while countless MR forum members applaud and complain at the device. Popular tech sites will be overrun. The tablet would be headline news and a new craze to get one would ensue. Lastly, some hacker out there, having watched the whole press conference, has already figured out how to homebrew it and is working on fixing all the problems with it. (Well, maybe that last one won't happen right after...).

Wow... way to steal Apple's thunder, McGraw-Hill.

Nope! Jobs gave the OK for the controlled leak to entice a recalcitrant publisher to get on board before tomorrow's Show & Tell. Now why the M-H CEO would want to be party to encouraging a competitor I don't know...unless he hadn't really thought through that and the Apple execs were merely using his ego (and desire to be the first to discuss the tablet) to further their own agenda.

If this motorcycle doesn't have four wheels, there's no chance I'll buy. I mean, who wants just a "bicycle on steroids"? I want to have full 4 wheel drive so I can drive it everywhere my SUV can go. And all you people who say the motorcycle's engine is basically the same as a car's are WAY OFF THE MARK! Plus, no doors! What the hell is that about? I bet when this thing is finally announced it wont even be able to run in reverse!

Just saying, different features are suited to different devices. I still hold some hope that the tablet surprises me as much as the iPhone did. I never wanted a cell phone until I saw that device. Best to wait the 15 hours or so before passing any final judgements.

My only worry is say the iTablet dies (perhaps dead batters and AC adapter doesn't work or you drop it), what would one do then for their classes as all their books are on the tablet? You'd be pretty screwed. Honestly, the only way I'd feel entirely safe is if I could use the books on my tablet, iPhone, and Macbook Pro. I know that he said it would be available on the iPhone but could you imagine doing all your work/studies off of an iPhone screen while you try to scrounge up money for a new tablet?

This is one reason why I worry that all these ebooks will be packaged as separate apps, as opposed to just texts that load into a reader. If you buy a text on the iTunes store you could conceivably read it on multiple devices, including your mac or PC.

^^^^^^You forgot the fact that the tablet does more than just gaming. What about newspapers? I'm sure jobs will get nyt and others on stage

unless they come out with a miracle battery, i wouldn't be surprised this thing gets a pathetic 3 hours of real world use.

Jobs is going to call this guy and ask him to keep quiet next time.

Probably not. iPhone OS and probably not a full on Mac.

Tomorrow we will be saying, "Who cares?"

I don't expect this to be along the lines of the intro of OS X, Intel Macs, iPod, or iPhone. This tablet will probably be the best out there, but with iPhone OS, unless it's a very different version of that OS, makes this sound like a big PDA.

I was hoping this to have OS X.

I have very small wants with this new tablet. I *only* want the wall projecting screen and the controlling tablet that Eric throws the images up with (and access data bases and finds things where they are well hidden, but I digress) Just give me the NCIS LA setup and I'll never darken your doorways again.

I don't mind that the the OS might be similar to the iphone OS. I just really hope that you're not limited to what applications you can put on the device. There's no way i'm going to buy another device that bans flash, google voice, sling player, or any other app i might want to install. Quite a few times Apple has gotten in the way of consumers being able to install any app they want.
