I don't see why some people are unhappy about a lack of significant hardware upgrades. The iMac was significantly upgraded, and many of you just skipped the details. While they are faster (1.9GHz and 2.1GHz), come with a built-in iSight (hello.....$200 value where I'm from), and a remote, it also:

- comes with decent video cards.
- The entire unit is thinner than before.

So good. :)

And PBs aren't going to get some minute update at something like this. Expect PM and PB updates soon. I know people will still be disappointed because not getting an update at this event means that it'll probably be just a speed bump, but that's still better than nothing.

PIXAR LOVES DISNEY!

Am I the only one who notices that its only ABC tv programs they are showing?
Who owns ABC?
Disney does.
SO I'm thinking Pixar will now stay with Disney....

I love ALL THESE updates and will buy a new iPod and and iMac.

I know the PM and PB lines are sorta sucky at the moment, but why do you think Apple are moving to Intel, IBM can't/won't do nuthin' for us.

PS: Watch Apples profits soar again this quarter with all of tis and nano at Xmas - WOW. :)

Given that this transition away from Yonah to Merom will take place in such a small period of time it's really nuts (IMHO) to get a Yonah....
And don't expect a huge flow of native Intel apps right away.
If Merom's coming 6 months later, that doesn't make a G4 any faster. If Apple's ready to go Intel, they'll use Yonah if it's what exists. They'll hardly abandon their portables until this time next year.

I don't expect every app to be native--but I DO expect a good flow of them by June. Photoshop will be a latecomer. All the Apple apps should be ready, I expect. And a lot (not all) of the 3rd-party stuff.

It will be something people have to look at and make a decision based on their needs.

I'm not saying the transition won't be bumpy--it will be--but it's necessary. Staying with G4s through late 2006 doesn't seem practical unless Freescale or IBM have some BIG surprises for us. (I mean the good kind, not the bad kind we expect from them :p )

The point here is Yonah will be totally obsolete within a relatively short period after release. So, why spend significant $s for it when Merom is right around the corner? When Merom comes online in late 06/early 07 it will be a good time to buy and there will probably be many more Mactel-native apps ready by then. So, a strategy is to stay with your G4 until then given the initial Mactel option (Yonah) will be a temporary stop gap and you'll be running a good deal of apps in a slower emulation mode anyway. Also, it gives Apple/Intel and developers an opportunity to get the bugs out of the Rev A of this system.

Using your type of logic, I think I can prove mathematically that girls are evil. ;)

If by "obsolete" you mean "faster than any notebook any human has ever touched as of today" then I agree :)

And if by short period you mean 6-12 months, then I also agree.

But not everyone can tread water until late-06 (or early-07). It's a decision each user must make. My 1.25 Ghz G4 will not meet my needs that long, and NO G4 will meet the needs of many others.

I guess I will have to see it first to believe it. I would think that your G4 1.25 would beat the pants off of a Yonah based PB emulating a G3 chipset. I am not saying that it couldn't happen, I just would like to see if it is really possible first.

I guess if you don't use any pro apps (ie just use iLife & OSX) it would make sense. But if that were the case then your 1.25 Ghz G4 would be more than sufficient also.

Also does anyone really think that native x86 Mac apps will be released before the 4th quarter 2006. What would be the motivation for a developer? The native x86 Mactel market share would be incredibly small and if the developer is slow to x86 Mac, rosetta allows the PPC app to at least function on the MacTel box, so he would get the sale anyway. Seems like the transition favors a developer that drags his feet.
