maybe instead of angry i should be excited.

With it taking so long to get the new PB maybe it will be dual core with a built in isight and remote. Also pci-e

ugh... oh well guess i won't be buying myself a powerbook for christmas.

The iMac at 2.1 GHz is now using a faster CPU than the slowest "pro"-level PowerMac.

This pretty much announces that Apple cares less about the "pro" market than about the mass market. Yes, it's mostly a symbolic matter, though there are some apps that don't take advantage of dual processors well (or at all), such that the iMac is now faster than the PowerMac in some circumstances.

Apple today has more or less confirmed that it is a consumer electronics company, which as a secondary sideline happens to make a few computers targeted (badly) at the professional-level user.

THERE . . . IS . . . NOTHING . . . TO . . . UPDATE . . . WITH . . . UNTIL . . . 2006!!!!!ONE!ONE!!ELEVENTY!!

Since new iMacs feature PCI Express and 533 Mhz DDR, this means apple will update its powermac line immediately. Never has iMacs stood behind the Powermacs in technology. This is good news, that means the new dualcores will feature 533 Mhz or faster RAM and PCI Express.

What's up with blocking media access out? I understand clamping down on leaks before the event, but during? That's just... *shakes head* If this becomes a trend, there goes the likelihood of my remembering to "watch" the announcement events. Half the fun is the hype. Then again, perhaps that's for the best. I started paying attention to avoid buying something that would be outdated in a week, but since they rarely announce anything worth buying any more... *rolls eyes*

I like the tv show option. I wouldn't use it regularly, but I'd gladly pay $1.99 to download that ep I missed. But I've no use for a video iPod unless it includes wireless, real-time news and weather -- that I don't have to download and sync. That I'd use, but otherwise... *shrug* The screen on my Tungsten is bigger, and I don't even bother watching videos on it. And there's no way I'm paying over $1000 for an iMac that I don't expect to be properly supported once the Intel version comes out. So, hype hype hype ... for tv show downloads I'll use maybe a few times a year. *sigh* Yeah, once upon a time Apple was a computer company...

Frustration and anger is swelling

**** apple and all it stands for. i hate them right now.. to the most extent i can, i hardly ever swear, but i am soooo mad!! Steve Jobs: Let me piss all over my "pro" line, more like **** line. Powerbooks and Powermacs are no-existent anymore. I was gona buy ALL options on the new 15" PB, well... too bad apple, maybe i'll find a better way to spend my 3G's. and powermac, well, i was even thinking about one of those... nope. sorry. Apple: we hate ppl who want to spend good money on our "pro" line. Holy crap i'm venting like i've never vented before. I'm sure i'll come to regret what i have just said, but in the meantime, i'm sticking too it.

P.S. I dont see updates coming to PB and PM, why would they quietly introduce them?? and next event is MWSF. ihate apple right now.

When is the next event?
I don't think there will BE an event (like this one) for new pro Macs. They may just appear.

The next BIG event I think is in January (MWSF), but Apple could call a press event any time they wish. Dual core PowerMacs might deserve that, but I expect only small changes (for now) to PowerBooks.

(But if there are NO changes to PowerBooks then I'll be REALLY happy because it will make me hope for Intel PBs in Jan-Feb :D )

The Next Press Release

Keep on the lookout for the next press release, where Apple Marketing will sheepishly confess:

"The Current PowerBook/PowerMac line will remain as our sole offering for the holiday season. Stay tuned for more in the PowerPc Pipeline for 2006.'

Yeah, "Year of the HD" -- hopeless dolts.

boring boring bor... yawn

So whats the big deal. No one really wanted to view photos on an ipod so why should they suffer a 4 minute video or a 30 minute TV programme? Update to the iMac.. so what, everyone else might just as well wait for the Intel iMac and notebooks in a few months. A few new apps. Jee Wiz.

The nano rocks but these latest incremental updates, for me at least, are of little interest.

Yes it called an intel based powerbook

The only problem with that scenario is that particular Intel PB will be a lame duck. It is too soon for the really good Intel Merom chips due 2nd half 2006 and it is too soon for most pro applications to have native x86 versions. (Think Photoshop late 2006).

So assuming that Apple does release a Yonah or Dothan PB in Jan-Feb. It will get a significant enhancement hardware-wise in less thsn one year, and you really won't benefit from any performance boost over native PPC machines in the first year because you will be waiting on x86 apps.

The best bet is for a really nice update now that will allow users to ride out the bulk of the Intel transition, then update to latest Intel hardware and native apps in 2 years.

Silicon Addicit what is your problem with all the shouting. There are plenty of possible update/refreshment possibilties to the PB line. So chill-out with the loud compaining about users just wanting a nice update of a very well designed laptop. You have absolutely no additional knowledge on the timing and products that Apple will release over the coming year. So why shout at people who like to speculate!

I'm with digitalbiker. For all those waiting for the first Intel PBs - personally I'd hold off. Why? Yonah which will be the first Intel chipset employed isn't so great. BTW, read yesterday that Intel is having "issues" with this chip consuming more power than they wanted. So, it may be a longer wait and not as great as a performer - battery lifewise - than anticipated. In addition, more to the point, Yonah is going to be VERY seriously obsolete within 6-9 months after it is released. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=26879

I'm going to sit this transition out until there is software optimized for the Intel chips - at which point we'll all be spending big $ for software upgrades. And I really don't think that Rosetta is going to be the magical fairy dust that some people expect. It is emulation. And better than nothing. My expectations are limited for this stopgap measure.

Me? If new PPC PBs come out soon I'm seriously considering getting one to last me the 1 1/2 - 2 years until this transition is complete and the Merom is at Rev 2.

I guess great minds think alike. See my post just above yours! :D

Edit: OOps sorry! I guess I missed the reference to my post.

I am sure you are right, but that doesn't change the fact that the proline right now is lagging. Assuming Apple aren't able to beef up the current proline before the PPC->x86 transition, I think they will see a serious dip in the sales of the proline. Just imagine how these specs are going to look like one year from now, or worse, just before the transition early 2007.

come on chill! this was a consumer event and most consumer got just about what they wanted: ipod videos and a good imac update. airport express video would have been good, itunes should sell movie but hey, all in all great consumer updates. :)

the pro line will be next in a few weeks with the dual core 970mp chips. so reason to be angry now. be angry when the pro line gets a lame or no update till mid november. but then be really really angry.......

A touch confused - the mp970 dual core cpu / faster ram / pci express / sata2 drives / ??? all represent current upgrades - UNLESS the mp 970 is all vaporware.

I know, like i said i was just venting, and i'm sorry you guys had to hear it. I'm more settled down now after watching tons of music videos on iTunes6 :) But i've been holding off on getting PB since last november cuz january's update was pathetic. It will also be my first mac purchase, so i just want to get my money's worth, cuz there has been so many times i've almost ordered a sony vaio, cuz i dont want a huge dell. anyways, i just want a PPC PB b4 intel cuz i dont want a brand new chip architecture w/ apple, i can assure u there will be problems. ok... anger mostly gone, but if the updates are lame, i will keep my anger to myself and play first person shooter... :(

Not at all. The Pentium M is already faster than the G4. Yonah will be faster still--AND dual core. That makes for a GREAT upgrade, with an increasing number of Intel-native apps.

If the fact that something EVEN better (Merom) is coming in late 2006 makes it a lame duck... then every computer is always a lame duck. There's always something even better in half a year.

It's not so much the fact that something better will be coming in half a year. It's the fact that you will be emulating your software for that first half a year. These transitions are always a pain, I have been through my fair share with Apple before.

Also the current specs on the dual core Yonah make it too hot to put in the PB unless Apple decides to up the thickness to 1.5 - 2 inches and make a desktop replacement line. The dual core Yonah is also rumored to be causing problems and will most likely be very expensive.

Of course the Merom isn't going to be cheap.

The difference between Yonah and Merom is huge. Think of it as the difference between a G3 and a dual G5 at the minimum. Given that this transition away from Yonah to Merom will take place in such a small period of time it's really nuts (IMHO) to get a Yonah - especially as its a Rev A to boot for this whole technology. Let's be honest, Apple's track record on Rev A PBs ain't exactly stellar lately. And don't expect a huge flow of native Intel apps right away. I'm not drinking the Rosetta kool-aid either. While better than nothing, it is emulation and will significantly slow non-native apps on the Intels.

 This sucks. "One more thing" and no truly needed updates? The iMac improvent and video iPod should have been the icing on the cake to today's event. The event should have been about PBs that are so dreadfully neglected. So it seems that the exciting PPC products in the pipeline promise is empty. If Apple wants to become an iPod company, I will lose interest. My iPod is cool but I use a computer ten times more. No PB update since January!? Pah.

Damn that new iMac G5 seriously kick ass! I almost bought one last week but craped out becose of the x86 rumor stuff and everyone telling me it was a bad time to buy a mac. Now Im prety sure I want this one, seems like good value for the price. It seems like it might even be able to run some games at descent speed.

Just wondering, In terms of performance, how much faster in % do you think the x600xt is compared to the previous gen of iMac G5?
