I have the Pebble Steel as well, and was pretty surprised reading the dimensions of the Apple watch when compared to the Steel. It's right in the middle of both models width wise, but still taller than both.

I've been leaning towards the 38mm, but every time I see these numbers, I feel like the 42mm would work just fine.

It really comes down to trying these things on, if only they had them for in-store demo before the pre-order date..

something I think about with the pebble is the prongs at the top where the band connects. I wonder if that is accounted for in the height.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm starting to think those prongs are indeed included in the height measurement of the Pebble Steel. In that case, it'd probably be closer to 42mm in height, at which point the 42mm Apple watch is just a bit wider.

I measured my wrist and it came to about 202 MM. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me. I understand it is personal preference but does anyone have an opinion on what I should get. Also if I am to not preorder at midnight and go in and try one on on the 10th will I miss the first shipment because I didn't preorder right away?

Were I buying an Apple Watch (I'm not) then my strategy would be to try on both sizes before deciding which one to purchase.

Revolutionary, I know…

IMHO, men should get the 42mm. Anything smaller than 40mm some women get, but not all. Just for comparison a standard Panerai is 44mm, Rolex Sea dweller is 44mm and a Sub is 40 mm.

I know women who sport the standard 40mm men's Rolex and it looks great.

42mm is my choice.

I have large wrists. The ultra luxury chronographs in my collection range from 48mm and larger. At 6'4" anything smaller doesn't satisfy my preferences. That's but one more reason I'm not buying one. I tolerated the tiny iPhone's for years until Apple finally decided to build modern sized smartphones.

The are no absolutes when it comes to men and watch size. To many, the DeepSea and Panerai are trendy and oversized, unless you're a very large person.

Either way, it's all about proportions. The Sub is 40mm, but the bezel makes up a lot of that size. It is classy and understated, for a dive watch. The dial itself is pretty small and the same size as the 36mm DateJust. The Apple Watch is essentially all "dial" with a very thin bezel, and the 38mm is going to wear a lot more like a 36mm DateJust/Explorer or 40mm Sub.

It really comes down to which style you like:

Nice post. You going with the 38mm? I always enjoyed smaller watches especially since I have a small wrist. I usually wear 38mm but have a couple 42mm that fit me okay. My issue is:

Is it worth giving up the screen real estate to have a sleeker smartwatch that fits me better?

Will the link band for the 38mm be a little too skinny/feminine?

It's tough since I have seen small watches that wear much larger than they are and vice versa. I just fear the 42 might look huge on me compared to other 42mm round face watches I've warn. The only thing that reassures me is the pebble steel I have fits me fine. Thank goodness I have another month to decide lol

I think it's worth giving up the size, but I do have great vision. I have thin'ish wrists at 6.875", but I am 6'2" and I'm going 38mm. I just tend to like smaller, old school watches like the Rolex Explorer and whatnot. I also think, the smaller the screen, the less dorky it'll look, but that remains to be seen.

For me, the bigger question is the band. I'm starting to talk myself into the link bracelet.

this photo confirms the 38 for me. It personally looks more like a traditional watch. I have a pebble now and it clearly looks like a smart watch (still looks good though). On my wrist the 42mm would basically go edge to edge and would confirm that smartwatch look. I hope that makes sense.

Just curious where did you pull this photo from? I am having a hard time finding photos of people modeling the various watches (you'd think Apple would have lots of pictures of actual PEOPLE wearing the watches instead of just rendered pics of the watches alone).

"Any man, woman, or child could pull off either size with ease. This may not seem like much, but remember this is Apple's first watch, and it would be a very easy mistake to make it too big or too small. I'm sure there was much discussion about making it larger – how could there not be?"

Thanks, that was a great read! Unfortunately, I am no closer to making a decision. I wish I knew how large that guy's wrists are so I'd know how the photos would compare to my own wrist. I'm afraid I won't know for sure until I try them on, and with no Apple Store in a 100 mile radius, that's a bit of a problem for me.

It really is a great article. If anything, my wrist are smaller than his so that puts the 42 out of the question.

My thoughts exactly. I'm 6'1" and have small wrists (according to my body tape measure, 7" exactly) and I don't wanna risk having too big a watch on my wrist. I've seen the images of people with small wrists wearing the 42mm and it looks tacky to me.

And I completely agree; the larger the face, the dorkier it does indeed look. A smaller face will be easier to adjust to before smartwatches become more widely adopted.

I also don't think an additional 4mm is gonna make it any easier for me to read so 38mm is plenty for it's purposes.

(For the record, the space black stainless steel link band is SEXY. That's my choice. If you haven't looked at the 360 degree view at the store website, DAYUUUUUM!)

Man, you guys make solid points. I'm really torn since I have about the same wrist size. I wish the 38mm was a little thinner but it's the same depth. I feel like at 10.5mm it kind of adds to the geeky-ness more then the h x w. I'm almost debating pre-ordering both when they launch then going to the apple store the next day to try them on and make up my mind. Then I can just cancel one of the orders

I'm going for 42mm, even though it looks HUGE, it'll help my eyes

I have a 18 years old Citizen Hyper Aqualand Divers Promaster MA9004
Dimensions:
Diameter: 40mm without crown and 45mm with crown
Thickness: 11mm

it feels huge, but the actual display is tiny.

my wrists are 200mm, but I thought my wrists wear kinda small, as I would always have to get links taken off, but reading some of the posts here and looking at the sizing Apple PDF, it looks like I’m Medium to Large size

the one problem with :apple: watch I think, it’ll be the weight that makes it move slightly downwards or rotating, and you'll end up giving it a shake to realign every once and awhile, you could wear it Tight which could be uncomfortable with something so heavy

Last night I put my dress watch on top of the "actual size" pictures on the Apple Store App. The 38mm was slightly larger than my watch but the 42mm made it look like a kids watch. So I'm def. set for the 38mm now. The 42mm would look silly on my wrist.

I've looked for the "actual size " photos and haven't seen them on the site bony explore and then enlarging the images
