K What would I have to do for option 1. I know that for adding a line to the family plan you cant have it delivered to your home, you have to go into an att store to have it activated. Do we have to phone activated under the new line or the existing iPhone line. Then how do we do the sim card swap thing to change the numbers when the iPhone 3GS uses a SiM and the iPhone 4 uses a micro Sim card?

The help is appreciated.

I'm interested in doing this as well. Not sure yet.

I was just hoping that ATT could assign my current iPhone 3GS # to a new micro sim card, say i lost my original phone or something, and then swap that in but Im not sure how ATT does this.

If you want to pre-order, just order it as a new standalone line with an individual rate plan not as an add-a-line which can't be pre-ordered.

You can always merge the line into your FamilyTalk plan after you get it. Just make sure that you order it in the name of the Account holder of the current FamilyTalk plan to make the merge easy. Yes, it works if you don't but it takes a few more steps that I can explain of you really need all the ugly details.

For the rest of the how do I swap the iPhone 4 to one of my other lines, please consider searching on any of my numerous posts on the topic of an "Upgrade Swap", and please check back on June 24 for any late breaking updates to the recommended proceedure for the "Upgrade Swap" at home..

There are often slight differences between the activion steps for a iPhone ordered from Apple and an iPhone ordered from AT&T. Also we have to see how the AT&T Customer Care reps respond to the request for a manual contract acceptance / activation. It should be simular to last year but the new Micro SIM adds more to the mix because you can't just pop out the new unactivated SIM (it is now a Micro SIM) and reuse your current Active SIM.

17. How many devices can I preorder?
AT&T and Apple stores will sell one iPhone 4 per person for new customers, and one device per household for new orders placed online. Existing customers may purchase one per eligible telephone number online or through our stores.

I know this is quoted from an AT&T document so it obviously applies to preorders through the AT&T website. Regarding the second sentence, will that also be true of preordering multiple phones from Apple's website?

They can and will, you don't have to lie or make up an excuse.

Dave

I called ATT and i was told that I can add a new line for the iphone 4 and swap sim cards to swap numbers but then when i canceled my old line which has the phone # that i would swap into the new iPhone 4 that it would also cancel the number that I am swapping into the iPhone 4, is that true?

Yes. Here's what you are essentially doing:

Existing contract - Original phone #1 - Old phone
New contract - Add-a-line new phone #2 - iPhone 4

Swap SIMS or "upgrade swap"...results

Existing contract - Original phone #1 - iPhone 4
New contract - Add-a-line new phone #2 - Old Phone

If you wanted to cancel the old contract (with the lower ETF), you are also cancelling your original phone #.

I've been told you can ask to swap phone numbers between contracts on a family plan, but I never actually followed through and tried it. Perhaps Dave can chime in here and tell us if it's possible.

I may do this as well but just want to confirm that i will be able to drop the data package from the new line and have it just cost the $10/month. I'll just use an old Razr or something for that line.

Yes, you can. This is detailed in our upgrade guide.

I was wondering..my little sister is eligible to upgrade for a new phone in December 2010. Is she eligible for a full early upgrade even though she's not using an iPhone right now?

If not then what if I let her start using the iPhone and put a data plan on, would her eligibility date change since she would become an iPhone user?

Thanks in advance.

Buyer's Remorse

Not sure if this is on this thread. I bought a 3GS on June 1. I will be able to pre-order an iPhone4 on June 15th, keep my 3GS until the 24th and trade it in at that time. There is a 10% restocking fee. It's AT&T's 'Buyer's Remorse' program.

Can a non iPhone user with a data plan swap a sim into a 3G (broken screen and roommate has been using as an ipod)and call apple to have their date moved up? Upgrade date is September with a POS Fuze that has been replaced 3 times.

I believe others have tried and failed.

So can anyone else confirm that you can swap numbers between contracts, because I called ATT and they think im crazy.

Well, for one you're not going to want to 'swap numbers'. You're going to want them to associate your line with the phone on the line you chose to use as an upgrade.

So what's this deal about AT&T not getting iPhones in until the 25th?

I'm doing an upgrade swap on a family plan with FAN. Don't want to have to do that over the phone...

Im not sure if you've read what I wanted to do I want to add a new line for the iphone, and then somehow switch the number over from my current iphone line to the new line and then terminate the old iphone line and pay 115 etf. But apparently if I cancel the line with the lower ETF which is associated with the number that i want to swap to the new iphone line it will get rid of the number also. So someone mentioned swapping the phone numbers between contracts.

It was me. Unfortunately I could be wrong. It would be worth calling more than once and trying though.

tried searching on the forums but didn't see what was i looking for .

upgrading two different lines at two different times?

i am on a familly plan with two phones, for line 1 i am wanting to get the white iphone so willing to wait // or go to apple store on the 23rd to camp out if they will only sell them in store on launch (which i will probably have to wait till late june or july when they become available) .

for line 2 he is wanting to get the iphone in black so it is available now.

what i was wondering is , if i preorder now for the second line (and i guess it pushes my contract another two years) will i still be able to upgrade the first line of my account to the white one (when available) ?

much help is appreciated :) -Komio

As long as both lines are eligible. Did you check?

both lines are eligible, but what im asking is will i be able to preorder a black one today//tomorrow, and then eventually get the white one on my other line whenever it's released (all without messing up my contract and having to wait another year hah )

before with verizon, trying to upgrade two different lines at two different times has been a hassle and has ended up messing the contract time line up. was just hoping to avoid this if at all possible.

if i pre ordered through apple for july 15th and decided to cancel my order today would my eligibility reset for when i wanted to "upgrade" down the road?
