I'm one of the exceptions to that. I've only been on contract since late March. However, I was on Pick Your Plan for 15 months before then and always paid on time. I was lucky that ATT included my PYP time in determining my upgrade date. That date was initially July 2nd, but was changed to immediate last night. I am SO happy with Apple for doing this, even though I still have 21 months left in my contract, which will of course be 2 years on the 24th, which I am totally fine with.

a lot of people dont understand anything about att's new upgrading. they are giving people an early upgrade if you contract ENDS in 2010. meaning the latest you could have bought was july 31 2009. why? well its basicly giving the biggest :apple: fanboys the upgrade. if you bought after july your not a "fanboy" any way it's your fault you signed to get an upgrade 18 month and that is what you get. also if you change/cancel it is also your fault.

i just wanted to make this thread cause it seems a lot of people dont understand the difference between you get a 6 month early upgrade compared to 6 months after the phone comes out.

dude, not see the other 8 million threads like this, come on man, clutter, clutter clutter

I understand completely what the OP is saying... He should be eligible for the "early upgrade" price of $399/$499 because according to AT&Ts own press release current iPhone owners who are not eligible for the FULL subsidy can early upgrade. With that being said AT&Ts own system should tell us that we aren't eligible but have the option to early upgrade... It is not though and it just says we need to pay the noncommitment price. The OP is not complaining about not be eligible for the full subsidy!

I am in the same boat as I bought a 3GS on launch day last year (early upgrade from 3G) and am not eligible for the early upgrade price... I am not expecting to be at the FULL subsidy price but I would like AT&Ts system to show that I can early upgrade because that it what their own press release says. I would post the link but I have it saved on another computer.

For people who are using the 6 month early upgrade.

If you go here: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=OTY2ODA2OQ

and choose a 3GS and enter your account information, does it give you a subsidized price? I called my local apple store and they told me to use their eligibility tool and if it gave me a subsidized price for a 3GS then I'm eligible for an early upgrade iPhone 4 as well but it's showing me the early upgrade price of 349. Anyone think this isn't right?

I a new customer & purchased my iphone 3gs less than a year ago(July) and a according to their website and the text they sent - " As a valued customer, we can offer an ugrade w/2 yr + $18" . I seem to qualify. I have the basic plan 39+30data+5text plan so I'm a bit surprised since many here don't qualify. I don't know yet if I'll upgrade though, want to see the phone first.

That does not make any sense. If you bought your iPhone in July 2009, your two-year contract would not be up by December 2010.

The thing about contracts ending is wrong because if your contract is ending, then you are most likely eligible (and have been eligible) for an upgrade. I will take me as an example. I got the 3G in 2008 when it came out, thus my two-year agreement that I "signed" when getting that phone is actually up in 2010. However, I have been eligible for a full upgrade for a while now. I have just been waiting for the new iPhone to come out.

Yes

This may be your updated date (rolled forward 6 months). But it could also be a lack of updated accounts.

When did you last upgrade? How much do you spend a month?

i didnt see any that said anything about pre august and people keep talkin about that and wont shut up.

because it's not about August and it's been covered everywhere here on this site, look at the posts around this all on the same topic man, jeez bro, ugh ask them to wasteland this, uesless thread.

NO, NO, NO. There is nothing about contracts that end in 2010. The "One Time" upgrade is for iPhone customers that will be Upgrade Eligible from June 7 through Dec. 31, 2010.

If you are going to start a thread and make yet another wild statement, just keep flailing away....:eek:

I have a question. I'm going to have the iPhone 4 shipped to my house through Apple, and I'm currently with T-Mobile. Since I'll be activating my phone through iTunes, am I able to port my T-Mobile number to my AT&T number during this process?

1. They activate it in store

2. Credit vs Debit - If you have a debit card from your bank with a MC/Visa logo, they can run it one of 2 ways:
A) Debit - you enter your PIN (This is what they are saying they won't do)
B) Credit - It gets processed as a MC/Visa (This they will accept)

I can't imagine there are many in existence anymore, but long ago bank debit cards did not run as MC/Visa. You had to use the PIN.

Thanks! Yea I its a Visa check card so thats good.

On the Activation in store, do they have to handle the phone or can they hand it to me and I can hook it up and all that. I dont like anyone at all touching my phone because one time when I was getting a new BB the guy drops it on the table from a height of a foot and a half and I just stood there all wide eyed and made them get me a new one from stock.

Zing! +1
Upgrade eligible is not the same as end of contract.

Last year the sales rep in the Apple store handed me the box to open and peruse. But I eventually handed it to him to activate. I think my guy was being particularly sensitive to the whole "unboxing" experience. I don't think they are like that usually.

"Update: Good news, addicts! AT&T just pinged us to clarify that so long as your upgrade date is anytime in 2010, you're now eligible to spend an additional two years paying dues to AT&T. In other words, a fair amount of you will be able to buy one of these at contract price on day one. The full statement is after the break, along with AT&T's full pricing release."

Yup, sounds right. You will pay $399/$499 for the iPhone 4.

See the first couple of items in the Upgrade Guide for more.

I plan on pre ordering for an instore pickup at ATT becase there are no Apple stores within 200 miles of me. I heard something that pre orders couldn't pick the phones up units the 25th. Is this true? I plan on being there early as I am going out of town on the morning of the 24th.

Consumers may preorder iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS 8GB at AT&T retail stores or online at www.att.com/iphone beginning June 15. Business customers can preorder through their AT&T sales representative or by visiting AT&T's Premier site. For greater convenience and faster delivery, preorders can be shipped directly to a customer's home or business for delivery as early as June 24. Customers can also have a preorder shipped to their local AT&T store for pick up on or after Friday, June 25.

Just got back from AT&T. My brother wanted to see how much his deposit would be seeing as how he has no credit. I figured while I was there, I'd ask him a few questions. (For anyone interested, his deposit would have been $500. Sad face) I asked him if I'd be able to upgrade for the $399 price seeing as how I bought the 3GS last year. I also told him I'm NOT eligible for an upgrade until 2/11. He says I will be able to get it for $399, however, I told him I had upgraded early last year for $399 and he said he wasn't sure if they were gonna allow two early upgrades in a row. He didn't mention anything about the 18 month early upgrade rule. He just said he wasn't sure if they'd allow you to do it 2 years in a row. He suggested I come back on the 15th and see what their computer says. So, according to what this guy tells me, all iPhone owners can upgrade for $200 less than the no-commitment price. Unless you upgraded last year for the discounted price... and he wasn't sure of that. Obviously, this information is to be taken with a grain of salt considering no one at AT&T/Apple really know what the hell's going on.

So I checked eligibility on Apple's site and it says I can get a 32 GB 3GS for 199.00 so i'm ASSuming that means i'll be able to get the full upgrade price for the IPhone 4 (Fingers Crossed).

I have a 69.99 Plan with a 30 dollar data plan and 5 dollar text messaging plan on my line (104.99) per month.

There is a lot of misinformation and confusion out there. I was told as long as I had my 3GS at least 6 months that I would qualify for the early upgrade price. Even considering that I did the same thing last year.

If you see that price for the 3GS then you are eligible congrats bro welcome to the club :D. There are complementary "iPhone Life" magazines by the mini bar available while you wait .

The micro-sim arrives blank. Yes, just activate via iTunes.

Need you to elaborate here. So all I have to do is connect it to my iTunes that I use with Line 2 to activate the phone ordered for Line 1? iTunes can just connect to the proper Line 2 number without calling AT&T?

Sorry, one more step.

1) Order upgrade on Line 1
2) When it arrives, call AT&T and tell them you are using the upgrade from Line 1 on Line 2. They will reassociate the SIM with the proper line
3) Plug into iTunes and activate on Line 2
